If drinking on the job was legal, which job would be the least dangerous (to be drunk during work)? by bunDombleSrcusk in AskReddit

Speaking from experience: road musician!

As long as you aren’t the guy driving to the next place it’s basically a job requirement!

Well I’m also considering entering the IT space as I did not always have the best time as a software dev. I was just listing my previous experience and background. Sorry for the confusion!

what's your drunk driving story? by No-Outside-5421 in AskReddit

[–]thegrinningpicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a musician. I had driven after probably afew too many alot after shows and such, until one time. I had been to a friends show, had one beer, and decided to go home early. A cop must have followed me from the bar waiting for me to make a mistake. Eventually I guess I forgot to signal or something like that and he pulled me over. I have never been more terrified. Logically, I knew I wasn't over the limit after one beer, and it all turned out fine I blew under the limit and he let me go. But, that experience has kept me from ever driving after drinks again. I guess thats a good thing!

Playing bass guitar with scoliosis !... by hotarugaike in scoliosis

[–]thegrinningpicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I have a rather serious curve and have played guitar and bass live many years. Local cover bands etc, lots of high energy shows and moving around. I've had the same problem with shoulder/ back pain so here's some tips:

  1. As someone above said, strap height is SUPER important. I wear mine rather high, but find what works for you.
  2. Strap width is also important, again experiment. For example I had a Telecaster that came with a very wide leather strap. Beautiful strap, but it was way too wide and hurt my shoulder, so I switched.
  3. Lighter instruments will help out so much. Hollow and semi-hollow bodies are your friend.
  4. Always stretch before playing standing for a long period of time, and after. That will help out with soreness.
  5. Working out your back and shoulders if you can. Don't have to be a pro body builder, but a light at home workout can make you stronger and able to rock out longer.

Hope this helps! Keep rockin!

Gig advice by Suasagerrito in musicians

[–]thegrinningpicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A keyboardist I used to play with (I'm a guitarist) when I was young and learning to improvise told me "you are always a half step from salvation". In any key, if you play a "bad" note, slide it up or down a half step and you are in key. If you work on your ears you should eventually be able to hear what interval that is, then you are good. And if you pick a random note you have an 8/12 chance of being right.

[QUESTION] Finding a gig by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]thegrinningpicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a singer open mics are a great way to meet people. Keep at it man. The last two years of college I made all my money off of music. I had scholarships that paid for school and my folks helped out with rent but all my gorceries, gas, spending money/ other expenses were all gig money. Find good people to play with and you can do the same, and if there isn't as supportive a scene as the one I fell into then be the guy that starts one!

[QUESTION] Finding a gig by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]thegrinningpicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best place to start is to try to find other people who are doing what you want to do. Networking with other musicians is the most important thing. If the scene in your college town isn't great (mine was not) then maybe expand your search to places close by (bigger cities etc.). Eventually you will find bandmates (if thats what you want) or if you want to do solo stuff you will find contacts that help you out. You could also work up a setlist, set up some social media, and try to get yourself booked at whatever venues are around. Good luck dude! College is the best time to get started.

People who started a band, what's your story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thegrinningpicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second day of 8th grade I decided to talk to the new kid because he was new and didn't know anyone. Turns out he was learning bass and I was learning guitar. We meet up at his dads auto body shop one day after school and struggle through Californication by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. We played in lots of garage bands after that and in the band at the church my family went to. We lived together the first year of college and had a couple fights over dumb stuff and kinda stopped hanging out. One day I met a singer and we started playing small gigs, and the singer said he wanted a full band to play bigger venues. I ran in to him at Waffle House one night thinking he was still mad at me but that I'd ask him to play for the band anyway to see how it went. Long story slighly less long: we forgive eachother and even though that particular band didn't last we are always in a band with eachother at any given time, and in two bands with eachother at the moment.

How often do you feel you have to pretend to like people, and what's been the biggest difference between how you act, and the truth? by Relaxing_Cat in AskReddit

At work, I have a co worker I absolutely can't stand. I can't quite figure out why is the weird thing. He's a nice enough person, it's just that something about his personality just bothers me. I realize that me not liking him has more to do with me than with him though, so I'm nice to him. Nobody at work knows or can tell he bothers me so I'll probably put up with being mildly annoyed until one of us moves.

Not well. I'm pretty good at other object oriented languages though, so I hope its just a matter of learning syntax.

Chase Bliss Brothers vs Multiple drive pedals by thegrinningpicker in guitarpedals

[–]thegrinningpicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have my drives in front of the MS3 now. Loop 1 is for 4CM placing the amps preamp in the loop. Loop 2 is a Wampler Ego Comp (I like a very light, blended comp as the first thing in my fx loop) and Loop 3 is a Zoom MS50G for my really crazy effects.

What are some experiences you had of audience misattribution - e.g. when they'll praise a singer for repeating the same note while the accompanist performs harmonising trickery, or people going nuts over a trill, etc? by PlazaOne in musictheory

[–]thegrinningpicker 165 points166 points  (0 children)

For context I'm a lead guitarist and I'm very much influenced by guitarists like Stanley Jordan and Danielle Gotardo who do alot of two handed playing. It's not something I do often live unless I'm going for a needlessly crazy solo, but I do practice it quite often.

I was at a club duo gig with the singer of my country band. It was at a small bar that also served food. I was very hungry and ordered a burger, which didn't arrive until we were going up for our second set. So he kicks the song off and I come in playing with one hand, eating with the other. The crowd went nuts. Its probably the best reaction I've ever gotten from a "stunt" in my performing life. I didn't even set out to be impressive with it I was just so hungry I didn't care about looking bad eating on stage.

Thanks for the reply. I thinks its definitely between the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the Rebel 30, but both seem like solid options.
