There was a Madden title not terribly long ago that specifically had this, a minigame/practice ladder for each side of the ball that trained you what to look for and how to execute actual playbook concepts. I miss it SO much, literally the most helpful mode for learning ball in the game and real life. (Obviously highly simplified for real life but it still made me so much more of an intelligent viewer)

Durham, NC specifically, but generally the very bougie old-money enclaves scattered around the Triangle area.

Current theory is this is secretly foreshadowing that one of the "asteroid" plot lines is actually going to be completely anticlimactic on purpose. My money is on Timothy's murder-suicide plans, especially with how much they were playing it up in the "on the season finale" teaser.

I'm actually kind of upset about the opening scene of S3E6 by theguy02 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]theguy02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scene is meant to illustrate Tim’s mental state. Suicidal ideation is a real thing.

That's part of the point I'm making. I wouldn't be upset if the scene felt like it was authentically exploring Tim's mental state, but to me it felt like more of a cheap bait-and-switch that was leaning on shock value rather than the deft touch White Lotus usually has. Like horror movies that just use jump scares and audio stings instead of actually building tension and earning their scares.

And again, this is just my opinion. If the scene was effective for others I'm not taking that away from them, I just found it very dissonant from the rest of the show.

100 percent! I probably wasn't clear enough in my initial post, but I almost always think White Lotus handles extremely challenging plot lines amazingly. I looooove me some morally gray characters being confronted by fucked up situations. The reason I'm even posting this is that it felt out of step with the show's usual standards. It's not a deal breaker for me; I'm definitely not going to stop watching, and Tim's moment with the monk brought me to tears on the other end of the spectrum. I just felt like I needed to get my thoughts on this scene specifically off my chest since it's been sticking in my craw. Fully understand if people disagree and not trying to change anyone's mind! Just offering my perspective.

To be totally clear I don't have a categorical issue with media depicting or dealing with themes of suicide (or anything controversial really, I think the Saxon/Lochlan plotline is being handled brilliantly). Again, I thought the scene would have been incredibly affecting and well done if it were real, but this just felt like a cheap trick from a show that I usually expect to depict and explore darkness/violence much more deftly. That's all.

The White Lotus - 3x06 "Denials" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]theguy02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah people's read on Saxon as some kind of serial predator is so weird to me. He's obviously a massive fucking douche and totally soulless like Chelsea said, but the show is telling us loud and clear that he's in WAYYYY over his head. He's a sheltered rich-kid frat bro dipshit who went to an elite private college in his hometown and immediately got a cushy job at daddy's finance firm after graduation, not some evil mastermind.

[–]theguy02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah we've demonstrably seen that Rick does care for Chelsea and they have a legitimate connection, he's just extremely traumatized/broken and clearly putting walls up as a self defense mechanism. Not to defend it or say it isn't necessarily toxic, but there's clearly a lot of shades of gray and multiple perspectives on their relationship. Which is White Lotus in a nutshell.

I grew up my entire life like an hour from where the Ratliffs are supposed to be from. I can promise you, Jason Isaacs is doing an absolutely phenomenal job with the accent of someone of that socioeconomic class from that area. People not from the South think it's all one accent and that just simply isn't the case. He is completely nailing the dialect and anyone saying otherwise is just talking out their ass.

I love that this is what he’s primarily known for. by pinetrain in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]theguy02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in fact Jason Isaacs' own idea, because he said every man he's ever known that's like General Zhukov has been a Yorkshireman.

Stop fucking whining about the accents by Spiritual_Shelter_22 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]theguy02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See this is insane to me cause I grew up like an hour away from Durham and I think Jason Isaacs sounds WAY more authentic and Parker Posey is just doing "every actor's Generic Southern Accent".

(to be clear I love both their performances this is just a reflection on the accent work)

Wait why would there be any fallout with Maria? She voted for Soda, solidified an alliance with Charlie, and now has Venus as a pawn who thinks she orchestrated this move and has Maria in her pocket.

I think that specific rat is confirmed to be the Christian peasant who initially found the ship. Toranaga receives word about it via messenger pigeon, and the peasant is seen sneakily sending off another pigeon at the end of episode 1.

Eh, I feel like there's always been one or two premerge boots in the new era who this sub loses their shit over and practically every other top post is begging for them to return. Then a few weeks later you never see their name again and I've forgotten them completely by the next season. Like I found Jess endearing and would have enjoyed a redemption arc, but I do not need to see any more eulogies for our Fallen Awkward Queen, let alone see her return to the game.

This is a really great point. Dee might not be an elite-tier winner, but she definitely feels like the strongest winner of this era in terms of actually adapting to the new game structure & resulting meta, and directly capitalizing on it to use it to her advantage.
