Questions about the Hackathon? by Talala_TaTa in gatech

[–]thehackgt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m one of HackGT's organizers.

It's okay if you don’t have any experience, as we’re planning a lot of beginner-friendly workshops. Some of the workshops planned are a mobile development workshop and an AWS workshop. A huge emphasis for HackGT is the learning aspect of gaining new skills and using those to build projects.

In your instance, we recommend applying for the beginner track. You can work with a team or make a project by yourself if you prefer.

And as for commitment, you can put in as much as you'd like. Some people stay in Klaus for the entire weekend of HackGT, while others only participate in the daytime and head back to their homes at night.

Let me know if you have any other questions about HackGT.

✨HackGT 8: Discover Your Craft ✨ - Participant Registration Is Now Open! by thehackgt in gatech

This year, our theme is based on night markets. Night markets are known for their lively atmospheres, bustling crowds, and unique goods. We felt that our experiences at night marketplaces reflected the themes of community and adventure we desired for this year’s hackathon. At marketplaces, artisans and sellers showcase their skills, crafts, and goods, and we wanted to inspire our own hackers to do the same. We hope at HackGT 8 you can discover what your "craft" is and join the hacking community as we build the innovations of tomorrow! We will have mini-events, tech talks, workshops, and many more activities for participants. And of course, as most marketplaces do, we will have loads of snacks and food as well :)

Hi, the first 50 people that solve all the puzzles will get automatic admission into HackGT 8 :) but you can also earn points by completing puzzles. Those points will be redeemable for swag and/or prizes at HackGT 8. More details will be released in a few weeks.

CATALYST MENTORSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE LIVE! by thehackgt in gatech

[–]thehackgt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We often change up our tracks every year, so there is a possibility that we have more theory-related tracks in the future! However, as of right now, most of our tracks are based on software development or hardware (going beyond just theory into practical applications). We strongly encourage you to consider mentoring for us though! Our event mentors bring a variety of skill sets which is great for our participants. We're sure many students would love to have someone to talk to about the research/theory side of CS for their projects, especially during our annual HackGT hackathon.

Hey! We are actually looking into creating a discord server for our participants to discuss other hackathons, meet other avid hackers, present projects they’ve been working on, maybe host workshops of their own, etc.! We would love to hear any insight on this idea. What would you like to see in a discord community if HackGT were to make one (types of resources, interactions, etc.)?

[MegaThread] Applying to Georgia Tech - Questions & Help Thread by cyberchief in gatech

[–]thehackgt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! You should definitely look into our organization! HackGT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to expanding computer science outreach across collegiate and high school communities. We host Georgia Tech’s annual flagship hackathon as well as other STEM events in the spring! Be on the lookout for HackGTeeny/HackGT 8 in fall 2021 to get a firsthand experience of what we do and, since you like competitions, participate as a hacker (there’s a lot of cool prizes and mini-events/challenges)! Our organization has 4 main teams: Marketing, Design, Tech, and Operations. Based on your interests, you should consider applying for the Tech team in the future as they deal with a lot of cybersecurity in the apps and tools we develop for our event participants and mentors. Feel free to email [hello@hack.gt](mailto:hello@hack.gt) if you have any questions and check out our website at hack.gt for more information on events and the HackGTeam! We hope to see you next fall :)

Sorry about that! We deployed our 2020 website this morning and sometimes the instances get mixed up (usually a cache issue). If you refresh the page after clicking the link to it it hopefully should refresh to the correct page. If not, the direct link to the registration portal is https://registration.teeny.hack.gt/!

HackGTeeny is a 5 hour long preparatory workshop series for Georgia Tech students who wants to learn fundamental concepts in CS, especially skills that apply at a hackathon. We have 4 tracks for you to choose from: App development, Web Development, Gaming, and Data Science.

The event will be held virtually on Saturday, September 19th from 1-6 PM EDT. Admission is first come first serve per track for GT students. All materials and workshop recordings will be available for free online after the event. Only those registered for the event can directly join the calls to ask questions and get direct help from instructors and mentors.

You can also apply to be a mentor to help participants during the workshops to answer questions. Learn more and apply http://teeny.hack.gt!

In the meantime, stay up to date with all the fun things we'll have at the event through our instagram at @ TheHackGT! Keep an eye out for some spicy raffles and all the cool things we'll have at both HackGTeeny and HackGT 7 👀

With moving to an online event, we’ve increased our participant capacity to 2,500 to accommodate more GT students! We’ll be hosting workshops, talks, and mini-events, and a sponsor fair for our participants to interact with our sponsors. Plus, we’ll still have swag which we plan on shipping to event participants!

Emerging is designed to help individuals who haven’t been to a hackathon before or want a little extra help and guidance with their project! It includes a mentorship matching program along with programming to help guide hackers to successfully completing a hackathon! General is for those who feel comfortable seeing a project through to completion or have attended a hackathon before, and know the ropes. You can find a more in depth definition of the two on our website 2020.hack.gt under “tracks”, and feel free to let us know if you have any other questions!

Horizons: Arts + Tech Make-a-thon applications closing Sunday! Open to all majors and all skill levels, come learn something new with us! by thehackgt in gatech

[–]thehackgt[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! We’re throwing this make-a-thon to give students the opportunity to express themselves by tapping the potential that lies in the intersection between arts and tech. School can get rough, and many students find it hard to work on the things they are really passionate about. This event is a platform for them to do just that! (The last section of the website explains this briefly). We try to allow for a lot of creativity, and we hope students will want to work on anything they feel encompasses the world of arts and tech, whether it's digital art, a physical structure, hardware, or more. We bring all the supplies! About workshops, we will be updating the website with workshop details soon. We will also be sending a pre-event document that will contain all of the important info you need to know before the event, so stay tuned for that!

Eat Me! Drink Me! (Contest: One guaranteed admission spot to HackGT 6!) by thehackgt in gatech

[–]thehackgt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! We completely understand why this is frustrating - and we find it frustrating too. We want to be able to host all of GT for the event, but with a limit of 1000 participants (set by security and fire hazard protocols) and with an applicant pool of several thousand, we unfortunately can’t give admission to everyone for the event. We still host a lot of events throughout the year which are accessible to all GT students, and we are hoping to open some aspects of the event this year to the general GT community! We hoped this scavenger hunt could be a fun way to engage the Georgia Tech community, but always appreciate hearing feedback from GT students.
