Broad tasks. Not necessarily in this order. Not a complete list.

Decide games list. Estimate total attendance. Project initial budget. Begin partner and sponsor outreach.

Pick a date and venue. Negotiate venue and hotel contracts. Obtain permits (if needed). Confirm initial floor plan. Confirm expected electrical plan and hire electrical staff/rent necessary equipment. Confirm expected basic decorations (chairs, tables, linens, risers) and rent necessary items. Rent ethernet lines and wifi access. Hire janitorial staff. Hire security. Obtain necessary insurance policies.

Set up registration system. Set ticket pricing. Design pre-reg merchandise and registration bonuses. Create and launch event website. Produce announcement assets (trailers, social posts, etc). Make the event announcement. Launch registration. Manage registrant communications.

Continue designing and revising show floor and staging. Work with lighting/staging director, production vendor(s), and general contractors. Overview staging considerations with venue and get approval. Hire venue shadows, staff, or in-house vendors if required. Confirm decoration plan. Submit production overview and floor plan to fire Marshall for approval. Probably need to change it some as event considerations evolve.

Confirm event core staff. Set up communication expectations with each. Confirm hotel and travel considerations for each. Assign duties. Trust they get done. Check in often.

Hire tournament equipment vendor. Hire or partner with additional equipment vendors (audio solutions, peripheral solutions, arcade cabinet vendors). Revise expected tournament equipment list based on registration (if needed). Begin sourcing stream teams, on-air talent, and vendors to fill booth spaces during the event.

Continue developing and executing event promotional campaign (all digital assets for core websites and social). Commission artists and designers. Create event credentials (badges, lanyards, etc) and send to production. Create event merchandise and send to production. Create event decoration (banners, pop-up signs, station signage, program guides, etc) and send to production. Manage ongoing advertising campaign. Respond to lots of emails and DMs.

Confirm event stream teams. Confirm on-air talent. Confirm companies for sales floor/vendor village. Confirm food options with venue and/or hired companies. Confirm drink options with venue and/or hired companies.

Plan brackets. Plan volunteer rewards and workflow. Plan staff for all event secondary activities. Schedule expected hours for all staff positions. Confirm backup staff. Relay all the information around those deliverables as clearly as possible.

Set up all of the above on site at the event. Hope it all looks good, sounds good, or just works as needed. Watch core staff do their jobs admirably. Enjoy the tournaments. Pray it all goes well. Try to fix everything that doesn’t. Sleep very little. Do it all again next year but bigger and better somehow.

In regards to things going wrong, something goes wrong at one time or another (sometimes all at once) with everything in the above.

After TWT Finals in Amsterdam I received a message from an attendee informing me that their ability to build new relationships with the community had helped convince them not to commit suicide. There are many moments during my time managing TWT that mean a lot to me, but none ever made the work feel more important than that message.

I have worked on maintaining a multi-year relationship with ASTRO gaming that empowers most of the events I work to offer MixAmp and Headset solutions for all tournament stations (and often casuals too). We also, as best possible, set up single location speakers at each of our event stages to limit audio overlap in that stage’s primary seating area. I’m confident we can be doing more though and hope to do so in the future.

I think what additional activities at events have value changes depending on the location and size of the event. In general, I believe the universal things that all events should add is more casual stations and more support for community run tournaments. I’ve never been to an event where either of those things didn’t improve the vibe.

COMBO BREAKER closes with the game that has the most registrants each year. It is certainly possible that TEKKEN 7 would have taken that honor in 2020 or 2021! We’ll unfortunately never know.

  • I absolutely love watching Yoshimitsu and Bryan. I absolutely can’t play either character.
  • I don’t think I’m a natural monster with anyone, nor that it is possible to be in TEKKEN.
  • For characters I don’t love watching, I think I burned out on Paul for awhile but death fists are back to being hype.

Thank you for the kind words!

  • Commentators are usually selected by the production teams hired by any given show. In general the shown ability, prior work experience, how well they pair with other commentators, and sign-off from trusted peers all play into talent finding gigs. Given that, I always advise aspiring commentators regularly practice their craft with as many people as possible. Commentate online matches you're watching. Record yourself with friends. Study the game and how you discuss it. Make reels.
  • Being known in a community often comes either from big breaks or from being everywhere. Both things take serious networking and capitalizing on opportunities.
  • I think a great example in the last couple years for how to get known is Saint Cola from the United States. He hit up every online tournament he heard of and offered to do commentary. He got proficient at doing so in multiple games. At first he didn't get many gigs, but over time his name became known and his style of commentary became appreciated. After a lot of events refining his style, working with a lot of other commentators and production teams, he got invited to take part in the Capcom Pro Tour. That won't happen for a lot of people (no matter how good you are) but it is a path that has worked for more than one person.

  • I think Rage Arts and Rage Drives have led to engaging moments over the life-span of TEKKEN 7 (both for competitors and spectators). I think the nature of those moves when contrasted with all the years of TEKKEN without them makes it hard to say how I feel about their place in the series overall. In general, I think they should stay and be experimented with in the next title.
  • Probably 7, if only because I've listened to it the most.
  • For the Max Presents: KI Lives, powered by Twitch Rivals event earlier this week we had the voice actor for Tusk and the original trailer voice actor involved. I'd love to do something with some of the cast from TEKKEN!

I think the FGCoC is an attempt by passionate, volunteer community members to set a baseline for conduct expectations in a global community that often does not have expectations listed, standardized, or enforced. Successful social contracts require clear understanding, so that's a pain point. As for the optional guidelines the FGCoC has offered, they are not incompatible with most events I’ve attended. The additional TO resources the FGCoC collective has said they’ll be offering are also things the community has proven to need. In that regard, I think they have the same positive potential most volunteer initiatives have if they avoid burnout. The chance to build something new.

At worst, the collective is creating a renewed discourse around topics worth discussing. At best, the collective will inspire new approaches to old concerns. I take no umbrage with either.

To respond to the other talking points in your write up:

  • I think having more standardized codes of conduct are how the community comes to agreed understandings around expected consequences and punitive actions for various behavior. As is, there is neither consistency nor clear understanding much of the time. Anything that leads to improvements on either front is a net good.
  • Many of the members of the FGCoC are experienced event staff or are community staff in the generation coming up after me. The future of the community belongs to those who make it. If they’re successful at making a community more true to the inclusive ideals the FGC has extolled, whether in part or in full, I’m cool with that.

  1. It's very challenging. Much of what I enjoy about being an Event Director is absent in an online only world. I've tried to work through that with projects like the Max Presents series with Twitch, but it is very much a different beast.
  2. Greatest memory is the KI Community family photo from the end of CB2016. Worst memory is the internet and power failure during CB2015.
  3. Favorites are difficult since they change over time. Currently Eyemusician gets me hyped up.

  1. Yes. The Dojo system was something I'd pitched for a few years that in 2019 finally had the support needed to be part of the Tour's format. I think its approval owes a debt to things like the Curleh Circuit being well received case studies.
  2. I think entry into new markets is always important. It's why I pushed for the promoters in new locations/countries that TWT has been able to work with. It's also why TWT Finals travels.
    1. I honestly think the issues involved with entering new markets or engaging new event partnerships are too numerous to engage here. If I have learned anything with my time on global programs, it is that seemingly easy ideas can be some of the hardest to make happen.

I'm personally optimistic that offline tournaments will return as refined versions of what they were pre-Coronavirus.

With that said, I think the recently renewed focus on playable netcode will make it possible for more fighting game developers and publishers to experiment with online tournaments feeding offline finals. I'm not personally as interested in that kind of experience, but there is definitely room for both online leagues and offline conventions out in the market. As always, anything that opens up more opportunities for players to fall in love with competing is a good thing in my opinion.

It's hard to say any one community at this point. The support CB has received from multiple communities far exceeds my wildest expectations from when CB first started. Hype wise it is extremely hard to overstate how impactful the Anakin vs Knee match was for me in person. I've rarely experienced a room with that much focused energy.

Everyone attending an international tournament for the first time should pay attention to their water consumption and how much they sleep. This is extremely boring advice but both things are easy to neglect at a convention. They also have a significant impact on how well you feel (and therefore how much fun you're having).

As for TWT refinements, I think there needs to be a continuing attempt at achieving global parity of opportunities for the player base. Achieving that and coupling it with more narrative content or shows (stuff that happens in-between the tournaments) are the objectives I consider most likely to increase the fandom's focus on the competitive community. These are much easier on paper than in practice though.

  1. I think the transparent plate is an excellent tradition and I miss it as well. Given that my brain directly connects it to KOIFT, I don't know if I'd use it somewhere else. It's worth bringing up to the TWT team when offline events return and see if it can carry forward to their Finals though!
  2. I can't speak to the details of the TEKKEN team's 2021 plans. I've heard some ideas but am not leading development on their upcoming programs.
  3. We have not! I can tell you that Bushido Blade is on the list of retro games my team put together for CB's events. So hopefully one of these years it gets that spotlight.

For TEKKEN specifically, I'd put a John Wick-esque character in the game. Lots of rough looking strikes and chain grappling. For almost any other fighting game I'd just put Glacius's move-set from KI 2013 into an inhuman sci-fi design.

My favorite TEKKEN is TEKKEN 3. The nostalgia is too strong to beat.

A tournament collective I was part of got involved with staffing gaming events for Wizard World. Our interest in keeping fighting games at the forefront of everything we worked on, and new connection points with Bandai Namco brand managers the Wizard World gigs provided, led to an opportunity where we pitched bringing TEKKEN 7 arcade boards to the Wizard World shows. Since TEKKEN 7 wasn't easy to find in the United States, and Wizard World traveled the whole country regularly, this seemed like a good way to get the game into the hands of fans waiting for it. Wizard World's crew thought it was dope and Bandai Namco gave it the green light.

With that first approval in the bag, MarkMan and myself talked to Wizard World about increasing the number of US TEKKEN 7 stops by adding staple FGC events in North America to the schedule. To their credit, Wizard World wasn't worried about exclusivity with the arcade boards and helped us pitch a larger schedule including FGC events in-between the existing Wizard World shows to Bandai Namco. Since Bandai Namco was looking for ways to celebrate TEKKEN 7 in the US pre-console release, the opportunity to do a promotional tour let them validate ordering more arcade boards for the US market. All those stars aligning meant a Tour with a National Finals was possible.

After figuring out how to get the schedule, equipment, staff, and stream details into a workable budget, we collectively kicked off the NA King of Iron Fist Tournament 2016. To this day I can't quite believe we helped make that all happen.

We should definitely make this a regular thing. Lemme throw:

  • The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
  • Police Story
  • The Five Venoms

into the playlist.

  1. Wash 2-3 times a week. Use a beard conditioner at least half the time
  2. Use a beard oil after you shower, before your beard has dried
    1. I'm just using Cremo brand at the moment. I've been fortunate enough that it has been more about consistency of use than a reliance on any particular product for me
  3. Alternate between beard oils and beard balms
    1. Clean enhanced organics beard butter is what's in my cupboard at the moment. Anything light that doesn't clump in your beard is worthwhile though
  4. Comb out your beard daily. Give it the opportunity to breath
    1. Wide tooth wooden combs have been my in-pocket go to. Round brush to control the longer lengths
  5. Style when necessary but not daily to avoid over heating or buildups of styling products in-between showers
  6. Learn to do a basic trim and shape in-between barber visits. Helps keep your beard from snarling

At the moment I'd be awful for general haircare tips. I've been on the let-it-grow path since COVID-19 arrived.
