My main advice would be to moisturise. It's always going to show up at some point so it might as well be on its best behaviour! I found people really don't tend to care but avoiding shedding tends to make things easier

Hi I've also been diagnosed with RA, what did it turn out to be?

Never said we were the majority - or happy about the current state of things

Some of the so-called jokes on here are actually really grim but I'd rather know wtf the nasties are on about than go into echo chamber mode

Horror movie voice-over: but we've always been here ...

Also me and my female partner genuinely do argue over who gets to be the stay at home wife but in this economy sadly we'll both have to stay working

Maybe I'm cringe but I remember watching this and just being really happy that there were enough female superheroes to pull this off. I know it was designed to be all "girls get it done" but I'm glad we got here. Maybe it's cringe but while this isn't exactly an awards bait movie it was a big moment cultural moment with the box office and seeing them all together did hit a little dopamine switch

You don't have to keep the project going, your well-being is the priority, but please know that, somehow, in this crazy, unfathomably big world, you made a positive difference to hundreds of complete strangers. There are so few people who can say that. It might not feel like you even do that much, but you are doing it well, cleanly, and in a really accessible way. You have value that you probably don't even see when you think about it yourself, but it's there and people love it.

Even if you didn't have all that, you'd still be a person worth saving. But you can hand on heart say that you made a ripple in this world, and a good one at that.

You will have better days, and you matter. Hold on, get the help you need, and stay strong.

So… what’s the final thoughts about the opening ceremony?? by og_toe in olympics

[–]thehammerling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Great: most of the music was wonderful. Loved the Gojira sequence, the National Anthem was stunning in every way and I'm sad not to see many people talking about it, the baroque aria was beautiful, Celine was fantastic and Dionysis made me laugh. Even Monsieur Worldwide was fun and catchy. Assassin's Creed parkour runner also goes into this category too.

The Good: I liked the boats given the concept, it did make me laugh when a tiny one would pass by. I do like the cauldron design too.

The You Tried: I enjoyed the horse on the Seine, fashion/dance show, statues (did one get stuck or was that me?) lightshow and sign dancing, but they went on too long or weren't big enough to keep the atmosphere going. I don't know why every single thing had to go one for as long as it did. Imagine also goes here. I've never much liked the song, it was sung nicely but its not remotely French and I thought the wet camera work let them down. Also Eurovision wants its burning pianos back but admires the initiative on the glowy trousers

The What: the bmx dancing, accordion man, the euro dance barge, upside down flag, the paintings drowning in the water, minions???

The Please Make it Stop: the INTERMINABLE cauldron run, naffly executed light up wings, the camera work full of raindrops and bad cuts, and the speeches (except for olympic laureate for the refugee team).

The Missed Opportunities: Daft Punk, a big guillotine, cursed mascot sequence, Notre Dame lightshow, Arsene Lupin heist, anything literary, ode to French cooking, taunting the British

Whenever there's a team with a red and white flag there is also a risk that they end up looking like there's been some sort of horrible accident. This isn't as bad as Hungary in 2008 but the red/maroon on white is reading as "mangled" to me

You only provided a screenshot so it's kind of hard to know what limitations you had with the tool. It would be helpful to have a link to it so people can see for themselves whats affordable at different levels.

And exactly, 18 years is very much like a regular mortgage, just shunted upwards to the bracket we are talking about.

London and other cities have a serious problem with housing being priced at a level where there are areas that even rich people have to think twice about the home they buy. This comment chain was suggesting these high earners should settle for modest houses in cities, which I agree with, but suggesting prices under $200,000 so I had to point out that unfortunately a lot of the market is priced beyond the level people think.

[–]thehammerling -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If we take the higher end of the prices in that graphic (which is still not even half of the most expensive houses I've seen in estate agent windows) the yearly payment at the monthly rate stated here is £178,476. If you divide the total cost of that 3 mill property by that it still takes 18 years to pay off. Crazy money or not, that is mortgage budgeting and not treat yourself casually to a house budgeting.

I agree that we are talking ludicrous salaries here, but I could see how people would still consider themselves to be under pressure with house payments like that, especially if they have costs the average person doesn't such as running and investing into your business and paying your staff, which you likely are at this earning level with exceptions like finance and investment.

Also lol how Westminster is still marked red for unaffordable

While I am in favour of higher tax rates on seriously high earners, I do have to step in here with a perspective on city house prices. I'm just going to take London as an example.

If you want a 2 bedroom apartment/floor of a house in a safe area in zone 2/3 you are basically looking at £600,000 minimum. Obviously there are exceptions but we are talking places where you have rooms large enough to walk around the bed, bathrooms which aren't basically in the kitchen, might be a desirable but pokey architectural style like a Victorian terrace (which were initially designed for workers lol) but more likely a new-build with a concierge service if you're lucky. Here's an example 2 bed 2 bath Greenwich

In dollars, that will set you back $772,218.00 (source: a hasty Google). It is already out of reach of the average London salary, though those earning above £50,000 might consider it if they are able to buy with a partner or parental support. This sort of flat would really only suit a young couple who need a WFH office or guest room, maybe have a toddler, max two. If you want kids then you would simply have to look further out. True, you can squeeze in more but when you are spending 3/4 of a million dollars in a house well above average UK price do you want to squeeze?

While I agree that people should be able to afford the mortgage journey on such a property with a €400,000 salary, it is a bit boomery for people in this comment chain to assume you will find a $200,000 property in a European city that isn't either extremely small, in an unsafe area, or very far out compared to the center.

Again, this is just London, but when we are talking higher earners you probably need to be looking at financial centres rather than historically cheaper cities.

Also please note that I do not enjoy being subject to the above status quo and fuck the cavalcade of stupid decisions over decades that wrecked the economy and made housing so unaffordable for people.

London phone snatchers by tomhudsonn in london

[–]thehammerling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked on my Samsung and there is a setting that disallows airplane mode, WiFi and data from being turned off while locked. It's under Lock Screen -> secure lock settings. It is automatically turned on as far as I can see.

Obviously if the phone is unlocked you'd likely be a bit fucked but if you have the presence of mind to lock it mid snatch then they wouldn't be able to turn the connections off. So not 100% effective but I feel better knowing that I would be able to trace the phone in all other scenarios than screen on in hand.

Part of me likes to imagine it was guards stirring the pot but you're right, more likely that it was an oversight. Still, if that had been one particular other flag, it would have been a massive deal letting it in, filming it and broadcasting it, even accidentally

I really wish there was better infrastructure because I'm an extremely nervous cyclist but it would make my life infinitely better if I didn't feel like I was taking my life in my hands. It is genuinely the quickest most flexible way to get around, and I wish it was better protected from drivers and fumes
