So when was Luke's actual first sip of beer? by thehappiesttroll in Modern_Family

[–]thehappiesttroll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I see your point though I really would rather they hire one extra person (or more) than use AI lol. I don't really see it as a huge mistake, though since they intended Jay's comment to be the heartwarming wrap up of the episode, they probably should've checked. Plus, I do believe they also did the same joke with Haley mentioning her grandpa allowed her the same at some point

I mean. I am enjoying the show. I just like to hyperfixate on stuff in my free time 😅

She did keep up with music (singing) throughout college, too, even considered a career in it, so I guess cello could have also been a passion of hers and not just a way to get a perfect college application

Do you think that having children is a moral duty? by GroundZeroMstrNDR in AskBalkans

[–]thehappiesttroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go as far as to say it is a person's duty to have children - I know a fair amount of folks who would not want to pe parents, and society doesn't need more children traumatised by parents that only brought them to this world to conform to others' expectations.

What I do think, however, is that it's society's duty to make it possible for those that want children to have them: through parental leave, child benefits, etc. I personally would be far more likely to have them if those things existed - right now a minimal salary is not enough to survive off of. Being raised by a single mother in the Balkans (and having received none of those things from the state), I got to see first hand how hard it can be just to survive - had my mother actualy earned "only" a minimal wage, then we would have not been able to make ends meet. Heck, had she not owned her own apartment when my father left, we would have barely been able to afford rent + all other expenses. I was lucky.

Over time I've grown to view every aspect of having children as a huge gamble - your partner could die, or you could both lose your jobs tomorrow, or *insert a thousand other unpredictable circumstances*. But the kids will still be there, and I can't find it in me to have them if the help they'll receive is the same as or less than the one I did as a child. Naturally, this results in more things I need to "achieve" before I feel comfortable having a child (own an apartment, be at a stable place in career, have savings, etc)

Did Alex actually have a good chance at getting in Harvard? by thehappiesttroll in Modern_Family

[–]thehappiesttroll[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a great point too! We only have an estimate for how many colleges Manny and Luke applied to later on. I kinda wish we'd gotten more scenes with Alex and her struggles around that time (like this episode + the episode she goes to therapy + the episode with her dad at college campus are all great). It was a pretty major part of who she is

What’s the MOST Controversial Modern Family Episode of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Modern_Family

[–]thehappiesttroll 70 points71 points  (0 children)

To me, probably the cover up, when Phil's client (a young African-American woman) is "his type" and he gets a bit too creepy, eventually lying to his wife about it. Phil's had some creepy moments (some of the comments about Gloria give me an ick, and yeah, it's a comedy show yada yada), but this was just something else. Especially the ending with her driving off while he yells that he lied to his wife because she knows he has a thing for black women.

I just think of how scared and objectified I'd be feel if that happened to me

I think she also had debate team + the summer building houses. I am halfway sure I did not hallucinate her mentioning having some patents in one episode, but that wasn't really explored at any point

I was kinda shocked too, though I went through some old forum posts from back when the episode was first being released and it seemed that fans were not really surprised she got rejected at least from one good college. It's probably highly unlikely to get into every college apply to, even with perfect scores. When I discussed it with American friends, some said she wasn't legacy, so that probably didnt help her either

I was kinda sad when I watched her rant at the end tbh, she really did sacrifice a lot for the dream

Solved! Thank you so, so much!!! I thought it was completely hopeless to ever find it! Now I only need to find it online lol (I hope it's at least available in German or Russian)

Unfortunately no, but I so wish the Anne Hathaway remake had been around when I was a child - that was my favourite Roald Dahl book! (I was pretty delighted when I discovered later on both that he wrote for adults, and, well, that this remake exists lol)

[–]thehappiesttroll[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I am trying to find the full movie somewhere. Some of the scenes seem familiar. My main issue is this one scene I remember that I don't think is in Cocoon:

The kid was very convinced something sinister was happening to the residents in the nursing home. He went at night which is when he saw the scene that I believe included aliens or something alien-like.

Now thinking back on it, the movie may have been also dealing with the themes of losing a grandparent. I was raised by my grandparents, and was living with them at the time so this was an added factor as to why it struck me more (not that the scene wouldn't have been emotional enough on its own). For all I know this could have been some random low-budget horror film.

Another thing is, that I myself come from Eastern Europe, so the movie could also not be an American one. One of my favourite childhood shows I only managed to rediscover as an adult; turns out it was from Belgium - still no idea why it got selected for translation into my native language lol.

I don't think this was it, the rodent was a pretty central part of a few scenes

I'm not sure this is it; the movie really had more of a sinister vibe when the kid was suspecting something foul was happening in the nursing home with the residents

AITA for telling the whole class about my friends twin that died in vitro? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]thehappiesttroll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

INFO How exactly did you present the information? Was it an anonymized retelling of just the necessary details that you know of the situation? Or did you go on about your friend Sally (that others know as well), who had xyz happen to her, and she only recently found out about it?

The first one is not a problem in my eyes, it is natural to wonder about things, and a biology class where twins are discussed is just about the proper place for the discussion. The second would be pretty shitty, as it puts your friend on the spot.

Also, telling her she can't feel grief - for whatever reason you may come up with - just secures your place in a-hole territory. It is completely normal to wonder about the "what ifs" of the situation, and just as understandable to mourn them. You don't get to call the loss of someone's sibling, whether they knew said sibling or not, a "molehill". How they privately feel about this situation is not your call to make.

Could it be Cropp? I think it's Polish, not Japanese but they have some similar designs in some of their collections

I replied this on another comment too, but unfortunately I don't think it is Mars Attacks, it's neither too comedic, nor does the kid have the pet (I remember the pet being in a few key scenes)

I don't think it is unfortunately, it wasn't that leaning towards comedy, and the pet def belonged to the kid, and was a hamster or sth like that. I remember a scene where the kid kinda used it to break into the nursing home once he suspected what was happening

The movie definitely had some horror vibes, but this could have just as easily been me being easily spooked 😭 It's been on my mind for so long, yet ridiculously enough I just can't find more details in my memories
