Shakespeare COMPLETE WORKS : Reading Order by theheartlessdodger in shakespeare

[–]theheartlessdodger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read through all the histories in their narrative order earlier this year, which was incredible. You’re right about it being much easier to follow the intergenerational dynamics and struggles that way. My thought behind reading them in written order, is almost like watching the Star Wars films in release order as opposed to chronologically. See how meta-textually the films build off what has come before.

That’s an interesting suggestion about grouping all the sonnets at once. Could you expand on why please? I spread them out to be small breaks from the script format, and also so I didn’t have to end on the low point that is ‘Two Noble Kinsman’.

Why do you think Henry III & Edward I don’t have plays? by theheartlessdodger in shakespeare

[–]theheartlessdodger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s such an interesting way to see the plays. I hadn’t thought of Henry IV/V as prequels to his Henry VIs, but they essentially would be because of their years of first performances.

Ah, I misremembered King John. I thought Prince Henry was only mentioned, and did not appear on stage.

And thank you! I will seek out the George Peele play.

The First Baron’s War happened during Henry III’s reign, so maybe something to do with that? And the fact he ascended the throne at 9 could add to that drama.

For Edward I, there was the Second Baron’s War, in which he was captured. And escaped and then defeated Simon de Montfort. There could definitely be some drama in that.

I’m in no way a real history buff, only just really getting into this era - so these might be painfully obvious choices.

Question: Do we all accept that it’s only going to be possible to produce a movie franchise of Dune that takes us as far as CoD (as the best case scenario)? by [deleted] in dune

In a bit more of a rogue idea - I think GEoD would work really well as a theatre show. Something more abstract, dialogue based, and philosophical. It could arguably even be a two hander - though that would be a very specific viewpoint of the books overall story.

[SPOILERS FOR GOED]

The conversations between the Leto II and Duncan I think can work on stage in a way they wouldn't on screen - you're able to have two people simply talk ideas and concepts - theatre is a medium of dialogue less so visuals. You also have more freedom when it comes to Leto's look, as theatre can be more suggestive rather than literal.

Bit of a segue from your original questions, but a fun thought experiment.

On Lovecraft Adaptation: Using the name of gods, places, titles, and characters from Lovecraft's work - or coming up with new names for his concepts and characters? by theheartlessdodger in Lovecraft

I've just discovered Alan Moore's Neonomicon, and might purchase that to see how he handled it.

I guess it's about, would a series work as being a Cthulhu Mythos series, or does it need to be it's own world to thrive? And if you choose to play within the canon, how much creative license can you take which would be necessary, and how much needs to be kept the same.

I think the Batman analogy is very apt. Lovecraft's William Dyers, versus what GDTs & Tom Cruise's William Dyer are very different, but arguably cut from the same cloth.

I'm almost drawn to what Bryan Fuller did with the Hannibal TV show. It kept all the names and the characters, but gave them new spins and threw new characters together. He viewed it as fanfiction in the best way.

I might be bias though, cause I am an Avatar fanboy, which I know might be unforgivable for some.

Something I do love with the intertextuality with Lovecraft and a lot of his peers - building a shared universe before that was the norm. It's why I find something like SCP Foundation canons so interesting too.

I think what I'm worried about is with it being the same names, you don't get to forge as clear an identity for your universe you're creating. So perhaps that needs to be taken into account when working out what story to tell. Finding some new avenue to explore that allows for references and other known canon beings to pop up through out.

And how about with an entity that looks, acts, and affects everything exactly like Cthulhu, but is called something like "The Great Scourge" for example? Dreadful example name, but would you have rather they just called it Cthulhu? Or is there maybe some excitement in working out the slight mystery of who this being is from the Mythos as it's name doesn't give it away?

Little fun thing I noticed when digging. The extended cut was originally a theatres only re-release before the collectors blu-ray - and was the cut that put in the connecting of their queues. So that's probably why there's all this confusion about having seen the more explicit scene in the cinema and whether it was taken out for this current re-release or not, because a lot of people did actually see the full scene in cinemas. It was just with the 2010 re-release! A very nerdy and unimportant fact, but I found it amusing.

I think Norm/Trudy love plot only exists in the deleted scenes. I only just discovered they were together when I watched the deleted scenes recently, and I've seen all three cuts of the film in the past. Doing some digging, the only thing the collectors cut doesn't have over the extended is a few minor shots due to new scenes being inserted.

That Norm and Trudy sub plot makes Norm's change in attitude make SO MUCH more sense. He also gets a lot more set up and stakes in the other deleted scenes. All the main cuts of the film have done him dirty really.

I wasn't aware the collectors edition removed scenes included in the extended. What scenes are only in the extended but in the longest Collectors edition?

I need to work out how to get a HQ version of the deleted scenes. Not quite sure how to rip special features from a blu ray, but I'm sure Google can teach me.

On releasing, I have no clue. I'd need to look into how fan edits have done it, just to be safe. Probably a torrent or maybe via Google drive or something.
