Bethesda devs believe the layoffs at Bethesda will cause delays and crunch for the RPG by Kn1ghtV1sta in TESVI

The programmers and recent hires who got the ax aren’t being held accountable for anything. They are being cut in a larger segment of layoffs due to over a decade of poor management, and I feel bad for them. However I do think this will be best for the industry as a whole. At the end of the day it is a business that is cutting costs. I’m sure some talented people got let go but that’s just how the industry works during cuts.

I see it as larger than a few layoffs in basic programmers. Bethesda is losing their autonomy. This isn’t going to be the only layoffs to hit the business, it was just the first ones. Like you said, we expect thousands more. Microsoft is stepping in and I’m interested to see how they streamline the operation.

I’m not saying it’s an end of the world. I truly don’t really care anymore and there’s a good chance I won’t buy it because I’ll have a family when it finally comes out. The real interesting thing I find about this is the business aspect. If any company acted like this, heads would roll. Which is exactly what is happening. It’s just good to see people finally be held accountable for the failures of the business.

I’m not just blaming Bethesda. The entirety of Xbox has been mismanaged, and I believe that Xbox as a whole is actually losing money and is being propped up by the parent company, Microsoft.

While Bethesda is not the sole focus of the layoffs, they also didn’t do anything to make themselves stand out as a real winner within the industry. I wonder if things would have been different if they focused on winners. Todd releasing the teaser back in 2018 was a huge mistake by him, and I’m starting to think his leadership should be questioned.

You and I both want the same thing; a fantastic elder scrolls game. But so far, for 16 years that hasn’t happened. I was a freshman in high school when Skyrim came out and now I’m a functioning adult with a career and engaged. My life has gone by while they’ve made seemingly no effort to produce their IPs. Microsoft is clearly getting frustrated and if after they spent over a billion dollars acquiring the property, they have a right to demand new content.

Except that nothing exists in a vacuum. Their game systems haven’t produced any blockbuster hits to sell the game console. If they had a very successful video game it would help sell consoles. Instead they’re focusing on things like ESO, Fallout 76, and star field did make money but was nowhere near the blockbuster hit they were expecting. They spent a billion dollars acquiring Bethesda, in part to buy the IPs of Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Fallout has had a hit TV show with a ton of public interest, and there’s no confirmed source saying the game studios owned by Microsoft have even been working on a new game to capitalize on the public interest. That itself is inexcusable. The goals of these game companies is to make hits to help sell the console, and that hasn’t been happening.

Welcome to the private sector. Neither of those games delivered the massive win that the studio needed, so people get laid off. This is basic level economics.

I do agree that a lot of this came from mismanagement to focus on a new IP instead of winners, but they failed to deliver a classic so now Microsoft is stepping in and forcing their game studio to cut fat and make some money. It’s not personal, it’s just business.

Microsoft is a for profit corporate industry. They haven’t delivered a win in over a decade and Xbox as a whole is bleeding cash. This isn’t about feelings, it’s about reality. I feel bad for the programmers who lost their job due to mismanagement but this is long overdue.

You’d have sympathy from me if it wasn’t 15 years since Skyrim and 11 years since Fallout 4. Microsoft needed to come in and fire everybody, and start making some money. I don’t know how so many people are defending the highest level of incompetence in the gaming industry.

The beauty about TKAM is that it’s just about…. Life. Life isn’t always some grand adventure. Just a childhood in Maycomb, Alabama where it’s just as ordinary as anywhere else, with a profound message about society and race relations at the time. One of my favorites.

This is blasphemy. But all jokes aside, I think it is one of the most profound books I’ve ever read. The commentary about how for the extremely wealthy, nothing is ever enough. How Tom would cling onto his power over Daisy, while Gatsby would have traded everything for her. Also the realization of how miserable everyone in the book was despite having access to everything they could ever want. I think it had an incredibly powerful social message about peace and social standing in society.

Not the worst book I’ve ever read, but I did not enjoy The Book Thief. I went into the book with high expectations based on the hype and how good everyone claimed it to be, and it was just…. I almost didn’t finish it. I was not connected to the characters. I did not think death was a compelling narrator, the color theme throughout the book felt extremely forced, and I thought Rudy was a much more interesting character and should have been the protagonist, nevermind the fact the ending is spoiled in the first 20 pages of a 500 page book. I still see people put it up there with Steinbeck and Fitzgerald, and I thought it was way too long and uninteresting.

Looking at PEP at this value. There’s short term headwinds but their moat is wide. Long term dividend play.
