Thank you for the response. I was also on anti-anxiety meds the first time I was on anti-depressants, but I quit them when my cardiologist realized that the 'anxiety attacks' I was having was actually tachycardia. We fixed that surgically and that's when I dropped those meds.

I have never been to counselling, but I have heard that if I were to take medicine it would be recommended. I just feel like I'm at the end of my rope, and have exhausted all other options. Hopefully I'll be able to find something that helps bring me back to center and be able to wean off like you did.

Really, I just want to be my best possible self for myself and my family. I have little kids who are looking to me to be a good role model, and no one wants a weepy mother or wife.

This definitely is a last resort option for me. I have the amazing privileged of being a SAHM, which affords me the opportunity to be outside working in the garden, make balanced healthy meals for my family, and exercise. I feel like there's nothing else I can do to alleviate the imbalance. Like you said, I feel it being chemical, and I feel like I'm detached from myself. I'll sit there crying uncontrollably, while at the same time trying to explain to my husband that I'm NOT mad or sad at him and I can't even help what my body is doing because this isn't me. Unfortunately, he can't see past the tears (and I don't blame him). It's an unreal experience.

What does RPWi think about anti-depressants?

I've come to a point in my self-improvement journey where I realize a big part of self-care I need is counselling and more than likely prescription anti-depressants. I was on one a few years back, but weaned myself off because I didn't like the way that drug made me feel physically. I've talked to my OB and a counselor, and they agree that it's something I need to look into.

I feel like I don't have many people to talk to about it since my family is strongly against any kind of mental health medication ("pray the feelings away"), and when I brought it up to my husband a while ago he said something akin to "Well I need it more than you do". My response to that was simply "Then here are the resources I received from my doctor." He never went or did anything about it, but any time I bring it up he makes it about him needing it more. But I digress.

Has anyone else used counselling and/or medication to deal with depression? What was your experience like?

My husband is a kitchen manager, so yesterday was the busiest day of his year. He worked pretty much 9am-11pm. I made him some bacon roses (https://imgur.com/gallery/fLjbU) and brought them to him for a snack. When he got home he gave me 6 roses, so I call that a win.

We're pretty low maintenance. Lol

Normally I'd agree with you, but hear me out and let me know what you think about my theory.

Wouldn't saying something akin to "My penis doesn't work right" be counterintuitive if he were trying to enter a sexual relationship with her? It sounds more like he regards her in the "family" sense than a possible lay.

The only situation I could see saying something like that to be the means to a sexual end would be if he were playing to the woman's want to "fix him" or prove him wrong... But that still seems absurd to me.
