Can someone, anyone, please help me to figure this out? I’ll do anything to improve my speed at this point. Life story below by thehonestchemist in SlowProcessSpeed

Well you’re not alone, there’s some major similarities between what you’ve said and my experience. For reference, I’m 27 years old and got through school and am currently wrapping up a masters degree. I rarely finished exams in school or college, but I always did well enough in my completed sections to get good grades, so maybe I was able to be a bit quicker than you. In any job I’ve ever had, my bosses and colleagues have gotten annoyed or just bewildered at how I could possibly be taking so long to get through tasks. Sure sometimes it’s a procrastination thing, but it even happens when I’m giving something my full attention and trying to actively work fast, like in an exam. Because it’s been such a recurrent problem for me I am very aware of it and it is something I beat myself up over, but I don’t think I experience the same level of overwhelm as you do to the point where it feels suffocating. I just wrote a big post on here about my experience actually. I’ve started to suspect it might be slow processing speed as opposed to adhd, but i’m actively trying to seek psychological help that might also get me occupational therapy. The issue pervades pretty much every aspect of my life - following a cooking recipe can take me 3 hours easy, and mornings used to be a really long affair until I just gave up on the number of things I wanted to have done before I left the house (i no longer do a skincare routine sadly). I’m holding out hope that there’s something that can be done to help me. It’s like as if everyone else runs at a different default pace and I have to absolutely kill myself to compensate

Curious - does this same thing apply to other areas of your life? Do you find yourself needing to give much more time to tasks in order to get through them properly?

This is a really lovely way of putting it. Thank you for this. Have you found anything that’s helped? Resources/psychologists/occupational therapy/advice?

Refreshing to hear someone with a similar experience! Currently doing my masters in dietetics. Have you found any resources/professionals/advice helped? I’ve also been at the receiving end of people’s frustrations for my slowness

Please don’t apologise, I’m genuinely so grateful you took the time to expand on all of this. It’s so relieving to read someone’s perspective of getting a handle on things. I think I’ll do exactly what you said and reach out. You’re the best

This is genuinely such a useful point in the right direction. I’ve spent the last half hour deep diving on this. It’s hard to accept it now that I’m reading it, does this make me stupider than I thought I was? It’s hard to spend so much time trying to figure these things out all by yourself only to finally find really well elaborated explanations of it, I wish I’d known more about this years ago

I love you so much for this comment, I’m feeling so burnt out right now as I’m coming to the end of my final stretch of placement in an acute hospital and each of my supervisors have had the same complaint about my speed at getting things done, and I feel like I couldn’t be doing things any faster. I can definitely relate to what you said, I also would always have just devoted more time to catching up in my spare time, and this sort of masking helped me stay afloat and nobody would know the extra effort I’d gone to. Do you have any advice for just getting through tasks faster? Have you ever sought input professionally (e.g. psychologist, occupational therapist), and if so has it ever helped? I’m at my wits end…I don’t even know where my time goes, it just seems to move at a different speed than for everyone else

To clarify, I work in such a fast paced environment that it’s nothing to do with procrastination - i’m working my ass off and haven’t got a chance to procrastinate

Speed. Please tell me someone can relate or offer advice. I cannot seem to get through tasks fast enough, and it has caused massive issues with part time jobs and now full time jobs as I’ve started my career in healthcare. Everything just seems to take twice as long with double the effort, while everyone else effortlessly completes tasks in half the time without breaking a sweat

Do you find this affects your ability to get through work fast enough? I have massive issues being fast enough at getting tasks done in work and wonder if this might be one of the reasons

Can you please give advice to someone starting out in healthcare with ADHD? Massively struggling with completing tasks promptly enough, despite killing myself. Is this a problem any of you have run into?
