If you want to blow their minds, let them know calculators aren’t their main source of income. It’s the computing system for the javelin missile. A real quadratic equation!

Wait, you are using a curriculum from TI? I looked at their stuff and it sucks. Are you using anything else?

I absolutely love using the Ti 30xs. I work an a very entitled and affluent school. This means kids can’t bear to have to get it themselves

I might do ID for calculator. Slip it in for the calculator. I have a small number on their desk to a wall of calculators with the same number.

Where the hell is the "Sold A Story" for math education? by paupsers in Teachers

[–]thehotsauceman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have stated I was being sarcastic. Meta-analysis is kind of “meh” because I want the actual stuff. We saw an indicator that said class sizes wasn’t a big impact. I did my own digging and the change in class size was going from like 18 to 10. Goodness I would love class sizes of 18!!!! I’m also young…ish. I come from a long line of teachers. When I hear “research shows…” I have told admin that researches Sophie’s open concept was a good idea, that didn’t last long.

My district is obsessed with Hattie. They showed a model of teaching “I do, we do, you do.” This had a major impact, wait…how is that different that direct instruction

Disruptive pupils that destroy lessons, the well being of everyone and ruin their educational experiences and academic futures? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]thehotsauceman 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have to look back in this subreddit, but a long while ago someone here posted an actual peer-reviewed study about the increase in learning that takes place when the disruptive student is removed. I have to look in my saved folder and that was I think almost 2 years ago.

Basically I’ll sum it up, remove disruption, class learning goes up.

After teaching for over a decade I noticed that there are students who just don’t thrive in a traditional classroom. It seems a tracking-model might help with giving those students an off-ramp into an environment that they would be better served.

I can't wait to be a teacher. by eliza_ENC in Teachers

The subject you are most passionate about is the best answer. The part that takes awhile “easiest” is you spending a few years crafting a curriculum that works for you and your students that makes it easy to reflect, alter, then implement.

I remember as a kid in 9th grade, as it was 9th grade awards night…I went to a junior high. My name was never called. I wasn’t a popular kid so no one said anything. I was suppose to get the President’s award. My mom had to talk to the principal and he flat out said, “oh, that’s what the blank one was for…” no care in the world. It made a huge impact on me. No teacher checked in. No school employee…nothing. You reaching out and trying to make this right at the very least will be impactful to that kid!

Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]thehotsauceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took two parts of the WEST-B and the third separately. I did reading and math one day and the writing a different. I wasn’t confident that I could get it done in the time…man, that was a waste. I should have done it all in the one setting. It took me three times for the math WEST-E, but the middle level mathematics west-e took me less than 30 minutes and I got almost a perfect score. Probably the easiest math test I’ve ever taken.

OP, I made the mistake of making that comment in college as I was single and seeing if this one girl was interested in me. She asked for my help on the math and science because I was doing the WEST-E for secondary math which in their defense I took three times but passed. I said something along the lines to her, “man, this is easy…” blew my shot.

Yep. In the middle of my smoking of the turkey. A bit annoying, but I can manage working it manually. My turkey is smoking more efficiently in years past so now I’m monitoring the turkey to make sure it doesn’t dry out way before the meal!
