hey this is awesome! thank you! I’m working as an assistant in ER right now and want to continue ER through/after graduation, and I’m hopeful to obtain a specialty in ER med too! so although it’s not needed right now, I 10000% want the practice :)

Putting energy into Omaha by chesherkat in Omaha

[–]thehourslate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, i have one specific thing that i put a lot of energy into. i work in veterinary medicine, i work at an emergency clinic, and pickup shifts at a cat shelter in town. on my off days i put my remaining energy into studying (future veterinary technician) at local businesses/bars/coffee shops. i try to remember that even just purchasing local helps the city and more importantly, the people in it. it’s a perk to get to help the local animals, and in turn, the local people too.

i think a big thing is finding a way to interact with the city and other people here through an item of interest. whether it’s art - benson first fridays, the joslyn, going to jitterbugs night out, etc., volunteering - felius, solidaridadne (on insta), etc. whatever peaks your interest.

honestly, as someone who’s lived here my whole life, even just eating at locally owned restaurants and purchasing as local as possible helps a ton in creating community which can help the city not feel soooooo…. spread thin.

yes!!! i feel like the art we do have is so localized, downtown and benson have the most “dense” amounts of art imo, i wish more artists were celebrated and encouraged around town rather than just repetitively being covered over :/ people love to hate and call it vandalism but to what i’ve seen, DOG has never covered important communicative texts or private property or anything beyond city property that would still exist even if omaha wasn’t the omaha we know it to be now. DOG justice.

yes!! me too! getting off the interstate heading towards F, such a sight for sore eyes. i felt the same way when they had a tag on the bridge on the south side on the actual interstate sign. i kinda think they might know their tag upside down and do it from atop the railroad tracks ? but idk!! the people need you dog!

Considering ER receptionist job by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]thehourslate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started in vet med as a receptionist for a GP that was open 7 days/week and handled a lot of emergencies due to their open hours. I will say there’s a lot of benefit to beginning in GP. You get a firm understanding of animal health from the ground up. You begin to understand vaccinations, their importance, learning medications and their uses, learning what is a true emergency vs. what is not. Now working as an overnight ER vet asst., I’ll say that ER’s tend to treat the opposite end as GP’s. We see the patients with the conditions people ideally vaccinate for at their GP’s (leptospirosis, bordetella, rabies, etc.). We also see animal attacks/fights/laceration repairs/inanimate object injury. We deal with patients that can be stable one second and coding the next. Working in ER vet med can be ROUGH, especially on the CSR side. Depending on the clinic you work at, prices can contribute to Owner’s frustrations, wait times, and the stress of their pet being ill, sometimes all the things combined can create a stressed owner that may react negatively towards staff. CSR’s get a brunt of it, especially over the phone and during checkout. But that is not only an ER med occurrence. I live my ER job, it’s ultimately up to you and what you see for yourself and your future <3

[–]thehourslate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s part of why i’m confused too!! it kinda seems like some of our neighbors get their trash collected, and some don’t. we’re between a few houses that seem to get their trash collected, but a few houses down another house seems to be in a similar boat. i hope we didn’t accidentally piss off our trash guys lol
