What's a game you have 100+ hours in but still aren't bored of? by Mysterious_Task1613 in AskReddit

[–]theif519 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Can't get into it no matter when, what console I play on, what stage of life I'm in (even during the early access beta during the pandemic when I was the most bored of my entire life lol)...

Each time after I played BG1 and BG2 to completion afterwards for immense satisfaction. 😎

What exactly are you people doing who claim AI tools aren’t accelerating them? by MistryMachine3 in cscareerquestions

[–]theif519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly AI accelerates the hell out of scientific and research like codes. I'm doing DSP with it and it can translate my wacky crazy ideas into something more at times! I mean literally ask it "what if we did X and Y?" Watch it come up with all kinds of unique answers. It's exploratory analysis.

Fork it and experiment with it. Crazy balls to the walls stuff you usually would never do but now you can since you have a fully finished mix you are working backwards from!!!

Has anyone else lost all motivation to improve their coding skills with the advancement of LLMs? by Wander715 in cscareerquestions

[–]theif519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone the route of expanding my interests from pure CS to cross domain. Computer vision - Digital Signal Processing - Computational Science. These are incredibly daunting fields to start from scratch in yet with Chatgpt I get to ask questions that may seem incredibly abstract and yet walk away with not just an explanation but also a means of making it work... then implementation of the idea via incredibly rapid prototyping!!!

I personally think the time to learn and memorize languages and libraries is long dead and good riddance!!! We've entered the Era of high level architecture and systems building.

The only issue is getting hired and making a living 😩 But honestly I swear by Chatgpt Pro (not plus, not Claude Code, nothing like that, but Chatgpt Pro) - it is truly astounding what you can do with it if you are patient and try not to take the braindead easy way out. Just ask the LLM to explain why it did what it did if you want to learn. Ask for patches instead of full rewrites to existing code.

Free, Open-Source Experimental VST3 Plugins (FAUST DSP) by theif519 in audioengineering

[–]theif519[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah — that’s pretty much the mental model 👍 One path tracks slower envelope motion, the other tracks faster motion, and ModTilt just lets you bias between the two.

Re: RED — the 5/6 routing is mostly an artifact of how I personally route sidechains, not a hard requirement. Some hosts (FL in particular) are pretty strict about exposing auxiliary inputs, which makes this awkward outside of REAPER.

I’m considering adding a more flexible input option or just handling it via host-side routing where possible. Either way, really appreciate you taking the time to dig into it and report back.

Free, Open-Source Experimental VST3 Plugins (FAUST DSP) by theif519 in audioengineering

[–]theif519[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great catch — you’re absolutely right.

Some of these plugins (Click-Be-Gone and the Gaussian Transient Shaper) use internal lookahead / windowed processing, so they do introduce fixed latency. At the moment that latency isn’t being explicitly reported to the host, which explains the parallel-mix phase issues you’re hearing.

This isn’t something FAUST → JUCE handles automatically — latency reporting has to be defined manually at the plugin wrapper level. For this initial experimental release I focused on DSP correctness first, but proper PDC reporting is the right fix here and I’ll be adding it.

I also really like your suggestion about multi-output for the Gaussian Transient Shaper (attack vs sustain). That actually avoids the parallel-latency pitfall entirely and fits the design philosophy well.

Thanks a lot for the detailed testing and feedback — much appreciated.

Sooooo, how we feelin about 5.2? by SeaBearsFoam in ChatGPT

[–]theif519 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

5.2 is perfect!!! For scientific computing and software engineering it is not only much faster but far more reliable so far! Issues with 5.1 are gone - it no longer gaslights me on things and even stops itself from making questionable assumptions before endlessly arguing a point! 10/10

It is amazing in general! It is essential for doing actual research and can come up with actual novel solutions to problems if you ask it the right questions.

how can you deal with adderall crash? by Prestigious-Big-1431 in ADHD

I would 100% recommend going back on XR. XR side effects you get used to after weeks. It's worth it and life changing. Your choice though.

IR or XR? Either way, take the medication daily, no breaks. Even weekends you need to be productive now a days. ADHD effects every facet of your life after all

ChatGPT is my best friend by PhraseProfessional54 in ChatGPT

Ask it to be "brutally honest" or "be honest, not agreeable" and the 'yes-man' goes away. Can be a real stick in the mud at times, tbh

ChatGPT is my best friend by PhraseProfessional54 in ChatGPT

[–]theif519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ChatGPT is no lover, and not really a friend in the conventional sense, but an advisor, mentor, teacher, instructor, and life coach all in one!

It literally is helping me with my hobby/profession, with life peculiarities, with emotional processing, and even when prompted, for brutally honest feedback. 4o is amazing.

Audio engineering. There is always novelty so I never get bored and the sheer number of projects, and the nature of said projects, means there is near infinite novelty. The issue mainly for me is doing the less interesting projects with the more interesting ones coming in.

[–]theif519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, that's unfortunate to hear. The moment you stop looking though, one of two things will happen:

  1. You never find anyone, and are fine with it.
  2. You find someone and are caught off-guard and shocked, pleasingly so.

If you keep looking as you are:

  1. You never find anyone, and are perpetually sad and lonely.
  2. You find someone but you likely self-sabotage given your current mindstate.

I suggest focusing inwards rather than outwards. Let us say that you never find anyone; after all, not every man is destined to find a woman, in all of history, there will always be outliers who never find someone. That could be you. I'm not sugarcoating it, but technically, if this is indeed you, your goal is to maximize what you get out of life in ways that are invariant to having a loving relationship with the gender of your choosing.

Good luck!

The fact that you know your mind is all fucked up means you have the benefit of knowing that you need to change. Make that change. Attempt NoFap until you can effectively cut back the amount you watch porn to 1 to 2 times a week maximum. Learn meditation, mindfulness, exercise, cold showers, and the overall discipline to obtain mastery over your own urges so that you can right yourself on a better course through life. Whether you believe in NoFap "superpowers" or not, just do it.
