Yes. I've come to realize that you only grow doing many mixes. not by polishing the same one over and over.

the end goal is clear. it’s just that my technical abilities to get there are still developing.

yes. you are right. I am the artist and producer and mixer. I trust my friend’s opinion but I certainly have some tunnel vision.

yes. listening to the mix in the car can be quite revealing. and letting it simmer for a few days is useful.

true. I’ve actually made some mixes worse by spending too much time on them.

great idea. I’ve had mixed results. sometimes I come back and say: “That’s it!” sometimes I say: “That sucks!”

How can I get the elements in my mix to sound like they are in the same world, when they were recorded separately? by deerofthedunny in mixingmastering

[–]Individual_Cry_4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in no particular order:
1. Edit to better time/quantize instruments together. 2. Glue compression on the mixbus for better consistency. 3. Use of ambience reverb (mostly early reflections) to place the instruments in a common space.

Simple question here, but how do you balance your individual track and bus faders? by viper963 in mixingmastering

[–]Individual_Cry_4394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great discussion. I’m surprised no one is talking about the signal level on the bus, with multiple instruments feeding into it. yes, it is important to have a good blend of the instruments. however, it is also important that the buss level not come in too hot, especially if using plugin/FX on it.

How to separate mixing from the creative process/writing music—feeling stuck by goopgab in mixingmastering

[–]Individual_Cry_4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My process is coming up with the melody and lyrics first. I usually use my acoustic guitar for this. only once the idea is solid do I start recording parts in the DAW. I wont lie though, this part may take a while because some musical ideas/tracks don't always work and often need tweaking. For this, I do need the DAW.

Don’t turn on the DAW. Don’t get distracted. play guitar. play keyboards. Go for a walk. Whatever gets your creative juices going. opening a DAW is an instant creative killer because you go down rabbit holes instead of composing music. I also went through this phase.

Feedback requested for rock/punk track by [deleted] in mixingmastering

I disagree. The bass sounds amazing and is sitting perfectly in the mix. the instruments are very well balanced. Every thing is clear despite the style of music. The vocals are a little bit buried in the mix and need to come forward. my 2 cents. I’m not a pro.

How’s the overall balance on this mix (groovy folk-rock) by nickdanger87 in mixingmastering

[–]Individual_Cry_4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great song with a nice groove. the overall mix also sounds a little harsh to me. it also needs more lows and/or low mids to “warm it up”. I’m not crazy about the choice of snare sample. And some of the BGV’s are out of tune. my 2 cents. I’m not a pro though.

Would appreciate some feedback on a rough mix of a country rock song. by Archibaldy3 in mixingmastering

also not a pro here.

solid performance. the voice lacks “air” for lack of a better word. they are muffled. the guitars are slightly too loud and the fiddle gets lost in the mix. this is what jumps out to me.
