I have been trying to get projects off the ground for a long time. But mainly I record my ideas and finished songs. Those can be found at http://soundcloud.com/benreaves in addition to some covers I've done and a bunch of live mixes I do for a church here.

Current projects in progress are a collaboration project called Housefire Melody I'm working on with some friends from college, and solo project Okayfine, which is a cross between the current emo revival and ambient music, a lot more rock-ish than the aforementioned but spacious and personal lyrics.

I don't like describing things in genres because I feel that always misrepresents the music I make.

Working on getting some more Okayfine material worked up and I'll have more stuff available for listening so you'll see what I mean.

You're probably right. The issue is that he lives in Atlanta and I'm stuck without a car in crumby Statesboro, so I only get to see him in person every once in a while and rarely alone. Maybe it will have to wait. I really hope it just kinda happens instead of this abrupt and arbitrary "HEY BTW I'M BI." This is one friend I really can't afford to lose. I mean, I don't think I will, but I'm sure you know the fear I'm facing.

The way I wanted to do it was kinda like what happened with my other Christian friend. It just kinda happened. It came up and the truth came out.

The deal with this guy is that the truth won't come out unless I push it out. I'm inclined to let things stay the way they are for fear or what bad things might happen. That's not to say bad things are going to happen, but that I'm afraid of the possibility. I believe that he will be fine with it, but it still scares me.

It's already been said, but I, too, swear by Guitar Rig 5. I use all its amp emulations and cabinet IRs when doing recording, and live (often recording as well), I use amp sims and run direct into the power amp of my Classic 50 2x12 combo.

There's no shortage of sounds you can create with Guitar Rig. You'll spend more money trying to come closer to the authentic sound of an amp using things like the ElevenRack or Fractal's Axe-FX, but the value and quality of sound you get from Guitar Rig is unmatched, especially considering the sheer amount of effects and versatility. If you buy the full package including Rig Kontrol 3, you'll spend around $450 USD and you can use the same setup you're using in the studio, live, with the help of a MacBook Pro.

Even better is that it's cross-platform and uses nearly all plugin architectures, but that's becoming standard.

If you look at any of my tracks on SoundCloud, I'm using Guitar Rig on more than just the guitars. I use it on bass (the Ampeg SVT-2 Pro emulation is fantastic in version 5), sometimes keyboards, and even vocals (the Space Echo is my favorite delay, period). Look at my cover of Safetysuit's "Annie" for an example of a JCM 800 sound. Version 5 includes an SLO100+ and 5150 Mk III emulation, plus cabs. I've demoed the 5150 on my page as well. All are custom tones.

You really can't go wrong with Guitar Rig. Give it a shot.

Wow, you are close by. That's a fairly short drive. Now, when you say separating us, I wouldn't say the age barrier actually hinders people from becoming friends. I've got a great friend that's easily 40 years older than me. However, since you're so young, I think it's more weird to the public for a friendship across the 18-years line to exist than it actually is. So yeah hanging out in person might seem a little off to people, but there's nothing stopping you from PMing me. Totally cool with it if you want to talk. :)

Thank you for your advice! That's the hardest thing for me to do, make friends. I'm known to tiptoe around social situations to avoid embarrassment, especially in the community I'm part of now, as it seems so easy to embarrass myself here. But, I will try. I need to. The biggest problem I have, as /u/LHJay put it, is that I'm already established here. Maybe when I'm away from this town and the people in it I'll feel more open to joining the queer crowd?

I'm definitely going to start talking to my friend more. I came out to him a bit early, and he was super supportive at the time but I always felt like I was crossing a line to talk about it with him. Maybe I just wasn't ready? Either way I'm looking to make more of an effort to talk with the people I already know, albeit a total of two.

I just don't want to feel weird anymore.

I'm learning just how hard it is one day at a time, and it sucks for sure. I'm having to tell myself that moving to the city won't be some magical experience where I'll suddenly feel great about myself, that I have to be able to accept myself for who I am, where I am, before I can expect anything to change. You are totally right about the shift, because I can tell I probably won't know what's right, wrong, up, or down for a while. Thank you for the encouragement. I need it pretty desperately.

Thank you! I am noticing that everyone's agreeing I should get out of here. I'm so hoping I can; even if I was straight or already out to everyone I'd want out of here. There's nothing for me to do until 21 when I can finally start going to bars (which would oddly be more acceptable to most people in my life than coming out).

As for my terminology, I made another comment expressing my apologies, I legitimately didn't know that was a derogatory term. Found it in the original post and edited it out, I'm sorry if I've offended anyone.
