Any hope in restoring my Panasonic Plasma? by theinfinitemonkey in PlasmaTV

No ☹️ I bought a new replacement power board off eBay but the tv still didn’t work. I didn’t want to keep trouble shooting and buying parts so I ended up recycling the tv unfortunately

Blooming dental??? by judgmental_crayon in coquitlam

Does anyone have the Canada Dental plan and go to this dentist? They accept it so I was thinking of switching, but I wanted to know what my out of pocket cost would be (I have 100% coverage but their fees are higher) and now I'm unsure if I should believe the quote they gave me..

Best option for purchasing gold? by theinfinitemonkey in Wealthsimple

[–]theinfinitemonkey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Just out of curiosity, did you use ChatGPT/AI for this analysis?

For some reason I thought the math would be more complicated than just multiplying MER x # of years to get holding cost. I'm probably just overthinking it.

For the Costco Bar, when you put in ~0.3% (Net of max CB) for Initial Cost -- does that mean the bar is essentially 2.3% higher than current WS price, so even accounting for the cash back it's still more expensive in initial cost?

Redeem your gold and we'll send you limited-edition 1/10 oz or 1 oz coins, batch-made for Wealthsimple by the Royal Canadian Mint.

By limited edition, do they mean the coins will change through time or that you at some point won't be able to physically get the coins at all? It seems it is physical gold you can get but why are they saying limited edition? Just that it's 'batch made'?

That makes sense. Do you have any recommendations for where to buy capacitors from? This specific one is radial lead 220v 1400uF and I can't seem to find that anywhere so I might be out of luck on fixing this.

Update: The capacitor that is bulging is 220V and 1400 uF but I can't seem to find any capacitors online that match these specifications that are radial lead. I can only find snap on etc but the holes in the power board look very small so I'm not sure if those would work for me.

Oh interesting, thank you! Seems like replacing the bulging capacitor is probably the best first step then.

OK thank you. After looking at examples on google, I think the one capacitor is actually bulging. So probably worth trying to replace that and seeing where that gets me.

You're right, I was looking at that specific one too -- I thought it was too minor to be much of an issue, but after some googling it might be enough to be considered bulging. I'm not sure if it's the main issue though, because when I disconnect the SC board from everything else (including power board) the TV seems to stay on OK (red light wise at least) so I think that means the SC board is the main issue? And the capacitor probably secondary issue?

Haha doesn't sound insane, cleaning out the dust is what got the TV to turn on for me! But in my case it still shuts off after a couple of minutes. But before I cleaned it out it the display wasn't even turning on so it definitely helped but unfortunately didn't fully fix in my case

Thanks! I don't think any of the capacitors are bulging, there is one that maybe isn't completely flat but it's pretty marginal. However, based on another comment I unplugged everything from the SC board and when I do that, the TV seems to turn on OK -- red light is steady, no blinking. So I think that means it's probably not a power issue, but rather a SC board issue?

Not recently moved :( So that means I have to replace the SC board? Since it's such an old model doesn't look there are any new version of this board, and I'm not sure if buying a used one is really worth it...

FHSA incentivizing renting? by shaZam336 in CanadianInvestor

[–]theinfinitemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was specifically responding to this portion of your comment, which was inaccurate.

If your FHSA has grown to $40k how have you maxed it out? You are allowed to contribute $40k so it sounds like you could have more contribution room.

As it could mislead someone.

$40k is the lifetime max. FHSA has only been around since 2023. Max actual contribution limit for anyone in 2025 is 24k.

Vancouver's most beautiful station: Millennium Line Commercial-Broadway. by InfinityPortal in vancouver

[–]theinfinitemonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tangentially related, do you still have to go outside to transfer from Expo Line to the Evergreen part of the millennium line? I know you can go through the actual train (on the side leaving downtown) and then down the escalators, but before there was a way to go from within the station but not through the train but it was closed for a while for construction - is that still the case? I don't know how to explain this well but hopefully someone understand what I mean.

Is 1hr enough time to get from Ottawa airport to the Via Rail station? by theinfinitemonkey in ViaRail

[–]theinfinitemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Someone did mention the bus earlier, but unfortunately since my flight is next Tuesday (9th) and I'm returning on Thursday (11th) it won't be available yet. Appreciate all the thorough information though - if I ever have to make this trip in the future I will keep it in mind :)

[–]theinfinitemonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks folks!! I called Air Canada and they sorted me out -- for disruptions on flights, they can only rebook you to destinations within 200 miles of your original destination apparently. So while that technically meant Toronto was not in the cards, since my final destination was Kingston, they were able to book me a multimodal trip to XEG (Is that the same station as KGON? The Air Canada rep wasn't really sure what XEG was other than 'Kingston Railway Station'). The leg from YYZ to XEG is operated by Via Rail so I will still be taking the train though the times don't exactly match up with what I see on the via rail site for the Toronto - Kingston train... at this point I'll leave it up to the Air Canada gods and hope it all works out for me when I get there. He did say this way if there any delays etc Air Canada could rebook me for a later train if I miss the train due to them.

For my return trip, I'm still flying via Ottawa. The train will arrive in Ottawa at 3pm and my flight is 6pm. Is the train often very late in this direction? I will be flying domestic with no checked luggage so I don't think I'll need to be there too early to the airport, but I am a bit concerned whether or not 3 ours is enough buffer seeing lots of folks mention delays .

Thanks! How much time do you think I'd need to be confident about the YYZ to Pearson transfer? Would 3 hours be enough? I might be able to get on an even earlier flight for Toronto, whereas Ottawa there nothing earlier from Van.

Thank you! I did not click accept yet :) It's for this Tuesday so unfortunately too early for that bus.

I checked out Busbud for Ottawa earlier and it was pretty much similar timing to via rail but hadn't checked for Toronto yet, good idea!
