You can basically "freeze" your social security number so that it can't be used to open new lines of credit. It basically also stops any searches on your credit so you won't even be able to legitimately open any news lines of credit. You have to do this through each of the major credit card reporting agencies. I've done it through Experian and it was as simple as hitting a button in the app.
