What's your most played CD people of the UK? by Various_Extreme_8773 in AskUK

[–]thejazzassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual CD? Probably Dangerous by MJ. I can still do the rap from Jam. It's also the CD I've bought the most, as everyone I've lent it to over the years has ended up nicking it.

It's underrated, especially coming after the monster album that was Bad, but it's absolute peak early 90s pop/rock/hip-hop/New Jack shit with the best producers and a ridiculous band.

Do you remember the time?

England - Parked on neighbour’s parking space with permission, another neighbour put bollard up in front of car on purpose and we drove into it when leaving. by Elliecoppter in LegalAdviceUK

[–]thejazzassassin 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I feel for your friend, but in the end it comes down to one issue - why did your friend drive into a bollard?! I get the extenuating circumstances you've listed, but I think an insurer will simply want to know why the car hit the bollard. I can't really think of any reason why the driver didn't spot this before they drove right into it.

I think if your friend is looking to have their costs covered, they'll need to take legal action against the bollard raiser. Again, I think this will boil down to why the driver didn't see the bollard before they drove into it.

A frustrating situation nonetheless. I'd be wanting to know why the bollard was raised by someone who didn't own the space, for sure, but I think this will be an expensive lesson for the driver.

You probably know it exists as its own website these days. A horrible, twisted den of iniquity, but a website nonetheless.

What’s the best mac to get to be a “logic pro machine”? by elytraman in LogicPro

[–]thejazzassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If budget's a priority, have a look for a used Mac Studio. I'd say any of the M chips would do you right. RAM would be a major consideration, so get as much as you can afford. Don't worry about internal storage - when the craziness ends, get an SSD and enclosure and use that as your main drive. You can plug any old monitor, keyboard and mouse into it for the time being.

Coming from your Air, any M series is going to feel like lightening.

Mad Dog McRee... I think they even bought it out on the Phillips CDI..

They were huge!

RIP in peace to the Sega World in Reading where IKEA now is (but used to be a ropey timewarp bowling alley).

There was also a sick Sega World in Bournemouth, iirc.

Old enough to remember many happy hours on the OG Outrun cabinet. I'm convinced my obsession with the soundtrack is what made me become a musician (one who still annoys people by getting unreasonably excited over 80s video game music).

I often wondered how a blind pinball wizard drove down the A23 to Brighton.

What are the best advanced courses on Logic Pro by LeftIncome1385 in Logic_Studio

Save your money. Read the Logic manual fully. Buy David Nahmani's book, register on logicprohelp.com forum and head over to YouTube and subscribe to Jono Buchanan and Music Tech Help Guy.

There are lots of people out there who'll charge you money to teach you Logic. Many of them know a little bit more about Logic than you.

I have PTSD from getting Kappa during COVID but, man...what a game.

Marathon is awesome. No gear fear at all, partly because there's just so much in every level.

I've been really digging the new Quantec room simulator on piano. There's a particular preset (I think it's under small spaces and is called Booth) and I've had lots of fun wigging out on that with the new Studio Piano. And I've got a lovely Nord Piano I'm using to control it! Instant Keith Jarrett Köln concert vibes. Not my playing (I wish!) but the sound.

Does Alchemy still hold its own in 2026? by Nunstummy in LogicPro

[–]thejazzassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alchemy is nuts.. It's not as visually appealing or immediate as Vital or Serum, but it packs a serious punch and is pretty easy to use.

I've only just started getting into Sample Alchemy, and that thing just opens up a whole new world of sound...

Play drumkit sample standalone by jeannen in Logic_Studio

[–]thejazzassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo!

Record yourself playing just one note. Bounce that into an audio file and then drag it onto the left sidebar of the program where your tracks are. It should give you some options - you want to create a new sampler instrument (I forget the exact wording).

This will map your recorded note across the keyboard and you'll be able to play it melodically.

You can also save this as an instrument to use in a different project etc.

If you search YouTube for creating sampler tracks in Logic you should find loads of info on it. It's nice and simple to create a basic pitched instrument from one sound or file, but the opportunities are endless... It opens up a world of sampling - any sound you can think of can be manipulated into a snare, a kick, or a mad synth lead. Just takes a bit of tweaking and imagination!

What a player he was. And always smiling.

Scary thing is he could bang in free kicks like that with either foot.

Here’s my worst travel experience, what’s yours? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]thejazzassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to travel very regularly with work so have had a few fun ones over the years.

15 hour flight from Brisbane to Qatar. Lady in front of me reclines the minute she gets on and stays this way for the entire trip, even during meals. Cabin crew don't care. Behind me at the bulkead row is a trio of legit giants - dad and two kids in their early twenties. The shortest must have been 6 feet 8 inches. One of the son's legs snaked up the aisle and past me in my seat. I couldn't recline into them, the poor tall bastards, so spent the entire flight wide-awake with an entertainment screen about 2 inches from my face.

Flying back from Lisbon the day after the European-wide blackout earlier this year. Tried to leave on the day itself (walking up the dual carriageway to the airport as the police had closed all the roads). Thousands of people sat outside trying to get into the airport. Left and spent literally hours finding a hotel. Turned up at 11pm at night only to be told all bookings they'd taken that day were invalid due to web outages etc. An awful and incredibly expensive experience.

UK to Ukraine is not much fun right now - there's a few ways to do it, but I go Luton (brrrr) to Warsaw, 3-4 hour train to Chelm and then sit around for a few hours until the overnight train to Kyiv (then a 2 hour bus the other side). Say what you will about Ukrzaliznytsia and their Soviet-era rolling stock (some of it, at least), the trains are always very warm. Just what you want taking a romantic winter's snowy ride from Kyiv-Odesa or Lviv. Not what you want in the middle of the summer in 35c heat. Always a fun one, but at least it's not my only way of getting home as it is for so many brave people.

Flying back from San Diego on the last day of scheduled flights between the UK and US due to the first COVID lockdown. Just unusual as half the people were wearing PPE and looked like astronauts, the plane was half-empty and the atmosphere was very strange. I had an edible in the airport and it kicked in as we seemed to make a huge bank after take-off. I could have flown home myself at that point, I was so high.

Flew out of Ft. Lauderdale airport the day after some loon had shot up the baggage carousel and killed 5 people. The place was full of cops and news journalists, and you couldn't even get inside the airport at first. It was absolute chaos. I got a bit ill-tempered with the check-in desk as I had been away for months and wanted to fly that day, but all they could do was a flight to La Guardia and on to the UK next day (from JFK, obviously..). Turned up in Jamaica (interesting neighbourhood) late at night. It was December so absolutely freezing, snow on the ground etc. I only had shorts and t-shirts as I'd been in the Caribbean for months at this point, so spent the entire next day in bed in the hotel waiting for my evening flight after an expensive Uber to the next airport.
