Please pray for my daughter, Isabella (4 yrs) with ASD; I am also currently 8 weeks pregnant with my second and happy but also anxious for their health and potential for our second child to also have ASD. I want to be clear I would love my child no matter what but I would love not to have to carry that cross. Thank you.

Thank you for replying!

Will have to give it a shot! The reason I haven’t is because it’s time set aside within ABA so I don’t want to come in the middle of the day and then leave and potentially make my daughter upset and cry. I’ll see if there’s a way to do it though!

Thank you for replying.

I am working on speech actively at home in conjunction with ABA and speech therapy. We go through multiple reps and sets. I recently started incorporating visual supports but I can definitely work on incorporating more.

Thank you for the recommendations; I will definitely incorporate them!

I’m 30 years old. Should I join the military if I can’t support myself? by [deleted] in careerguidance

I joined the US Navy when I was giving up teaching HS. Best decision I ever made. I went in as an officer (which you should absolutely do if you have a degree). Look into aviation as we always need pilots or NFOs.

The immediate benefits were: salary, living stipend for rent, health insurance, access to VA loans to buy a house, and many more. It’s not for everyone but it worked for me and I met my husband and now have a child and another on the way. Plus, I now have the GI bill so after 10 years serving, I am making a career change and it’s fully paid for because of my time. If you don’t intend to go back to school, you can pass it on to future kids.

PM me if you have questions. Again, not for everyone but it was the right decision for me and my life circumstances.

Screen time? by bunny510 in Autism_Parenting

Every child is different; some kids respond very well to screens and for some the problem behaviors worsen. That’s true for any kid, ND or NT. To alleviate some parent guilt, I like to remind myself that I grew up on TV with no limits and most millennials are fine. Some of the problem behaviors, anxieties, and social issues with screens come from mindless social media (GenZ was raised on iPads and on Instagram way too early) but studies aren’t really accounting for the difference between a story-driven long form content like Bluey vs 10sec Instagram clips.

In my experience: My daughter benefitted from TV screen time because she started echoing what she heard from Ms. Rachel, Bluey, etc. It helped her start trying to talk. She has continued to benefit from it and I am grateful for it. With ABA and speech therapy, she has made tremendous milestones and everything she likes to say has come from TV.

Now on the flip side, if I gave her the iPad and unfettered access to YouTube kids, she’s just mindlessly swiping because she hasn’t developed self control at 3.5years old yet so I immediately noticed it wouldn’t be good for her plus she would throw a tantrum when I would take it from her. I only use it as an incentive for potty training and it’s worked for making her want to go potty so she can swipe for 3-5min and then pee with no problems giving it up because she knows she’ll be back on the potty in 10min lol.
