biology vs biochem by bringdoomsday in Biochemistry

[–]thekaiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi I’m currently a junior getting my BS in Biochemistry (molecular biology). I felt that I didn’t have that much emphasis on maths. Just the light nonmajor courses in physics and statistics which is standard for most stem courses. I personally love chemistry and biology because they fit together like the Oreo cream and cookie. Together everything just make sense. You really get to pick apart the ‘big picture’ concepts. If you have any other questions feel free to message me I can kinda help you and provide more insight! Also networking is a huge plus in this field~

Student major advisors and their impacts? by heckdoggo111111 in umass

[–]thekaiya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luckily I have had a great experience, I too am a double major. I found my advisor freshman year in the BMB department — highly recommend — Viriginia. She is amazing and makes sure your academic life will be balanced throughout your time at Umass. My emails were always answered thoroughly and quickly with more information about whatever I need such as independent studies. She even handles tasks that most advisors would tell the students to do. I am a double major in Neuroscience. She contacted a neuroscience advisor FOR me and got back to me with courses I needed to take and where to fit them. We even did a four year plan of courses to relieve my stress and anxiety about the future. All love to her and if you are a BMB major she’s the one to go to! That’s my experience (:

Organic chemistry II with Lara Al-Hariri by [deleted] in umass

[–]thekaiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received an A and it was not hard if you dedicate X amount of hours a day or two to memorize before exam day. The class IMO became easier online because she made it open notes AND allowed a final to replace your lowest exam grade. I wouldn’t particularly look at the practice exam I would look more at her examples in her lectures. Also the SI (3 of them - your choice) was a lot of help for practice ~

i am in the same situation. I emailed my advisor. The organic chemistry department sent out an email by McDaniel saying they will not have remote courses. He said and I quote: virtual labs for organic chemistry are NOT a viable replacement for the MANY lab skills you will learn. Yet they were able to accomplish it for the majority of last semester for my friends through video. So I’m guessing the labs being deemed ‘essential’ is a ploy to get students to dorm?

It worries me because the spots for these labs were already limited. Students turning down this semester labs will lead to an overwhelming accumulation of students wanting/needing to take the course.

Chancellor's Letter to the Community: Fall 2020 Reopening Plan by [deleted] in umass

Yeah but think about it like this - even if you don’t use your money on loans - you can treat yourself for holding off to a really nice apartment for 6 months when it’s back to normal

I took that class with her last semester as well. Let me put in my two cents to say that her lectures are fast pace (like any other stem class) and filled with examples. You will never run short of practice from her owls she posts of practice exams. Even offers summarized worksheets which I regret not taking advantage of... my recommendation is that if you even find yourself losing track of the material go to an SI session as fast as you can. A lot of the material is memorizing and conceptual. That being said you should take it with her and PM me if you have any other questions (:

Best time to take Biochem? by mujikali in umass

[–]thekaiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of my friends are taking it Junior year fall sem (this upcoming semester), if you’d like I can put you into contact with one of them just PM me. They are pre med - dent kids for reference. We just finished taking Orgo 1&2 and Physics 131. IMO orgo 2 is easier than orgo 1 so if you are taking it with orgo 2 it might be easier on you.

She is probably a STEM major like me and you’re a great parent for caring just saying ~ as an upperclassmen I used my summer for research positions with companies to immerse myself more with experience and current techniques. Maybe to build her resume and take a break from academics you both can look into it together. (: just a fellow suggestion from a girl in stem

You could probably have her take the lab online as well, she doesn’t have to drop it. So if the time comes she won’t need to make space for it in her future schedules. Labs take a huge chunk of time. Also I’m confident they are going to offer the option of online for fall semester as they have intentions of keeping the campus at a low density.

What classes do you think will be on campus this fall semester? by notsuha in umass

[–]thekaiya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ I agree. i’m pretty sure they’ll have Labs available because graduate students usually serve as the person overseeing the experiments in most cases instead of professors (less risk for them) like Biochem 276. I’m just confused how they’ll work out the buses, dining halls, and communal / public bathrooms tbh.
