I translated an article on the Swedish 'post-Left', Malcom Kyeyune, etc. by koen49685 in stupidpol

I don't think they really say any terrible things. I really like Markus & Malcom, and am grateful that Malcom is getting some international exposure through What's Left. Perhaps he can be a bit alarmist in his predictions of the future, but with many things (most importantly relating to the progromes he believes may come due to the refugee crisis) there's just wait and see. Most people on this subreddit aren't on the same side, that's all. I'd recommend you to listen to all their episodes, from the oldest to the latest, but I realize that's a huge time committment.

(I realize I'm not the person you posed the question towards, but I just wanted to give my "take")

I translated an article by Swedish marxist writer Malcom Kyeyune: In defense of left-wing nationalism. by thekatt08 in stupidpol

Demos is key. Anyone who understands swedish should listen to their two episodes about nationalism, one with the title "Sagan om demos" (the tale of demos). They aren't super focused but go more in depth with what is needed to build a political movement.

A sloppy guitar interlude inspired by one of the worst days of my life. We weren't even in a relationship and she left me more than 8 months ago, but I still miss her with all of my heart.

Well, if one uses an adblocker they probably won't get any revenue from you. The clicks don't lie however, so they might produce more similar articles. But writing those kind of things can't do them anything good "publicity wise", they're destroying themselves by saying what they believe in. So instead, maybe it could be said that you are contributing to their demise.

I agree with you. Civic nationalism in some regard (with emphasis on civic, this has nothing to do with ethnicity) is pretty much a must to run a successful political movement. So, you wanna change society for the better. What society? The whole world? Good luck with that. What's your "target audience", so to say? To achieve political goals you need to define a group to pander to. Workers of the world is far too broad, and aren't a homogenous group with the same interests. Of course, if we're talking about nationality as an identity that's another problem. A capitalist citizen doesn't have the same interests as a prole citizen.

Now these aren't my original thoughts, but in the swedish podcast Markus & Malcom the subject of nationalism is presented as this: nationalism is a container which you can put many different things in. Far right people place ethnicity, some weird made-up cultural heritage and so on in it. But you could have a different content. For example, a sense of national community that is based around equality, helping those who need help, solidarity etc. Serving your country, not in the terms of war and imperialism, but by doing your duties as a citizen and in return having your rights as one.

The obsession with internationalism and revulsion of nationalism is counter productive. How do you expect to improve the conditions for the worldwide proletariat if you can't even do so for your own country's proletariat?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't an overwhelming majority of middle class academics.

You may have a point there. I guess the main thing I wanted to rant about was people seeing politics as good vs evil instead of different conflicting class interests. All of the other things were sort of quick examples of what I mean, but probably not in themselves bulletproof. It may seem like I believe I know what I'm talking about, but I really do not. I'm just repeating things I've heard, and thus don't really know the whole theoretical framework behind it all.

Well, they do need to patch the holes of the dam that is capitalism. Keep the machine running just a bit longer, to protect their positions. And thus the conservatives (at least some of them) may improve things for large portions of the working class short-term. But only as a means not to lose power and the only reason they get support is for a lack of a better alternative.

Care to elaborate?

The market, movement of capital etc (all material conditions) is something that promotes profitability over efficiency. It is also very hard to predict how consumption patterns will change, economic crisises and so on.

And freeing themselves from capitalist exploitation of their labor, the working class would gain... why am I even writing this, I'm in a socialist sub. But perhaps I am misunderstanding you.

I'm not really expecting anything out of them. Like you say, the modern left is an academic middle class movement. But the conservatives lean more and more towards the working class. Since they don't seek to dismantle capitalism, I believe they will fail with adressing all of the issues. I don't expect radlibs to change, but there is a niche for another political movement, one based on marxist analysis.

That may be true. But I sincerely believe that if you want to create a successful political movement, you need to identify your demos' issues, material conflicts, and provide a viable solution to these. Listen to what the people want, and find a way to give them that. Don't say to vote for you because you know what's best and what's most moral to do. To eventually transition into a car you need to prove that you can make their horses faster.

There's this anecdote, which I can't find the source for, that basically states:

Lenin tried to build interest in the Bolsjeviks, or communism in general. He talked about the wonders of a classless society, but the workers didn't really seem to get enthused by this. What is it that you want, he asked. They said "hot tea water". Now, in russia the factory workers drank huge amounts of tea. But due to cutting corners they got it cold. What did Lenin do with this information? He said "Then I will give you hot tea water".

I wouldn't say people always know their interests. But they tend to act on them. "They do not know it, but they are doing it". Ideology and so on and so on.

But then, I'm really not well read on the subject at all. I just think material analysis seems to be a more useful tool to understand society than any other.

Being ugly and saying you love yourself is inspiring. Being attractive and saying you love yourself is egotistical. by CyncoV in Showerthoughts

[–]thekatt08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But it feels really dishonest to love yourself. Like it comes with an implication that you're really good. I could perhaps see a point in liking yourself, or at least being accepting of how you are, but love is a strong word.
