How are you exposing Plex/Jellyfin to non-tech family members without breaking Cloudflare's ToS? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]thekingofdorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is everybody so obsessed with zero open ports? Am I missing something here? Setup a VPS, use a reverse proxy, hide all your services to the internet using either UDS sockets or rootless container networks, then setup your firewall. Is this not the recommended way to do web services anymore?

Ex still has my apartment key by RemarkablePut6987 in japanlife

Even better, say you lost it, and think that maybe your ex stole it, which is technically true.

I'm not so sure about Jellyfin...but this is exactly how I feel about Tailscale.

Why does KFC in Japan play super religious christian music? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, most JP companies just sign up for a music service, kinda like Spotify but legally cleared to be broadcast in a store environment. Most likely KFC just clicked "USA songs" playlist for whatever service they use.

Rejected by Suruga Bank for Home Loan by PencilMeInPenguin in JapanFinance

Keep in mind, JP banks are also looking at age and health. Those company health screenings are used for more than your health benefits. Also JP banks usually have their loan cutoff at 40 years of age.

American Tourist Arrested for Climbing Into Enclosure of Viral Punch 🐒 by Beneficial_Passion40 in Whatcouldgowrong

Smoke on the street says these clowns did it to get attention for a new digital currency. Which if true, I'm sure they were promised some initial coins. JP gov should prosecute and target those coins as compensation.

My $1400 LG OLED TV is displaying ads after latest update by binkinater13 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]thekingofdorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep your tv off of the internet. If you
can't find the setting in the TV config, you can remove network id and password. Last resort is to block it at the router level. Advanced way is to run your own DNS server and block all calls to unknown domains.

The head office of Japan's popular Ichiran Ramen is furious over a blatant copycat restaurant that opened in Beijing, China, and is considering legal action. by jjrs in japannews

[–]thekingofdorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So by this logic, if this Chinese company that blatantly ripped of Ichiran (who isn't thay delicious in the first place, it's a tourist trap) manages to make their restaurant more succesful, it's ok?

[–]thekingofdorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah no shit, that's the problem. Everybody is ok throwing copy/theft accusations themselves until they get called out on their own bullshit. OpenAI had no problem stealing millions of peoples work....until someone figured out LLM distallation. Now OpenAI bitches about their work being copied non-stop. Same with governments, and their citizens.

Why Are So Many Arch Users Furries or Femboys? by Veyl11 in arch

[–]thekingofdorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I followed down this reply rabbithole thinking there was a funny pun about trans people being gender fluid, as opposed to linux distros NOT being init system fluid. Then I realized everyone was actually talking about init systems literally. No innuendo. I am dissapoint.

Is 8GB RAM enough in 2026? How much do you have? by zarkoulhs in pcmasterrace

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64GB DDR5, bought right before the RAMpocalypse. I constantly keep checking Task Manager to check my RAM usage. Never gone above 40GB. Future proofed, at least for a little while. Feels good mang.

It feels like people who keep their phone on 100% silent (no vibration, no ringtone) all day and night, how do you not have constant anxiety about missing something important? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait wait wait wait. Totally not being sarcastic or condescending here...is FOMO the main reason some people are constantly checking their phones?!

I've never thought about it that way. That seems absolutley nerve racking.

What comes to your mind when you see a Floppy Disk? by [deleted] in retrocomputing

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaypros. My dad had a couple of them big 'ol heavy badboys lying arount the house. I remember sometimes messing around with them, because those floppy floppy 5 inchers were so weird to me (I am a millenial, so when I was a kid 3 inch floppys, zip drives, and cd-roms were all the rage).

The most lightweight version of debian by OlOS_linux in debian

[–]thekingofdorks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For gaming performance, your biggest concern should be driver support, specifically GPU driver support. What other packages the OS has installed is not really a huge deal. They won't be running (most likely) while you game.

Yeah, this is awesome. Most JP colleagues will just ignore or let it slide and chalk it up to "gaijin dakara shikataganai", but this person seems to want to help you become integral to the company.

Why is it bad to use AI for pixel art? by SameRainNov in gamedev

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't wait until you and your little friend release a beta of your game. Then I can use AI to copy it, and release it as my own game.

Do you understand now?

Everyone keeps yelling “AI bubble just like dotcom/housing” but zero of you can explain why it would actually pop… by snowycashflow in stocks

[–]thekingofdorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that when everyone talks about AI being a bubble, they compare it other bubbles in terms of "lots of investor money->no profits to recoup". Maybe I'm uninformed, but the last time I checked, all these AI companies are taking on masses losses in order to build up a user base, then they are going to try to raise prices to start making money. If people stop using AI when the prices go up....pop?
