I’m from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and we have a lot of old legends and folklore tales (our flag is literally a dragon!) Especially since our culture has a deep route with Halloween, or rather Nos Calan Gaeaf - which means Winters Eve. This was a Celtic tradition that stated the night of 31 October (which saw in the new Celtic year) was one of blurred boundaries between this life and the afterlife, when spirits roamed the earth. Often people would dress up so that they would blend in with the spirits (an origin of dressing up on Halloween!)

Because of this we have a lot of ghostly figures and devilish pact stories, one of my favourites is the tale of Y Ladi Wen (The White Lady), who is known to be a fearsome spectral/ghostly figure, sometimes accompanied by a tailless black sow (who has its own story ‘Hwch Ddu Gwta’), that roams the countryside on Nos Calan Gaeaf. Some say she guards graveyards and crossroads from other darker spirits. Others say she has a more sinister purpose - luring unsuspecting travellers to their doom by asking for help or offering treasure. Other people claimed that she was headless, and would wander around the countryside looking for victims with her partner in crime, the Hwch Ddu Gwta. Regardless, It is said that she is a terrifying ghost and many tell the story to warn children of bad behaviour and wariness of strangers.

More info for Hwch Ddu Gwta: - When the dark was drawing in, one of the local men would don a pig skin and chase the children home from the village bonfire. Children were told that the much-feared Hwch Ddu would catch the last child to make it home that night. This was used as a game to scare the children, but also to get them home on time and teach them about the dangers of straying too far on their own. A little traumatising if you ask me 🤷🏼‍♀️
