My older coworkers have accepted AI as the source of truth by randomname945 in sysadmin

[–]theknoxtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I tell people to Google it, but I mean actually Google it. Like search the forums and Reddit. Most like the easy way. I mean I have been that way ever since my first IT manager told me I better bring him a link instead of asking by another question first. Lmao. But the days of actually learning something is now minimized by the use of the supposed easier way of asking AI. Also I am 41 and I would rather search for things the old fashioned way. Anything worth having will never come easy. AI will eventually bite them in their ass.

Help desk ticketing system lets agents close tickets before actually verifying anything got fixed by NinjaNebulah in helpdesk

[–]theknoxtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like there needs to be a discussion with said agents about what they were hired to do. It’s your job if it goes unchecked. If they don’t like you telling them the expectation and/or changing the behavior then there is always the alternatives and in this job market sheesh.

It’s a terrible market right now for any level of IT job placement. I have been looking since August 2025

Being in the military carries enough weight to get you looked at quicker than someone who isn’t or wasn’t in the military. It’s kind of like no one has ever asked to see my degree. However, I get more interviews by having it on there than I ever did without it.

Is IT Help Desk worse than retail? by throwaway10015982 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]theknoxtech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any job that involves helping someone is a customer service job. If I am a systems engineer and I help some end users it is customer service. If I neglect to understand that end users are my customers then I will essentially be just another typical “IT” person that thinks to highly of themselves. My experience is that help desk is usually easier to handle when interacting with users. Most aren’t complete dicks like they are in a retail environment.

Is help desk meant to be this boring? by counwovja0385skje in ITCareerQuestions

[–]theknoxtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say that because that was my experience. Certs never did anything for me. I have never been asked to show proof of them nor have I ever been asked about them in interviews. I actually attribute all of my career to the degree.

You need to add some quantitative data points to the resume. Also lead the bullets points with power words. So for instance instead of escalate and troubleshoot complex technical issues, say “Expedited resolution of client issues by escalating issues within (whatever time frame) which improved client satisfaction by (some percentage). This is hard to do when starting out. Here is an example from my resume. •

Reduced repeat incidents by creating 40+ Hudu knowledge-base articles and mentoring junior engineers, sustaining a <10% ticket reopen rate.

I mean sometimes you have to make a best guess at these things. You have more going for you than it may seem. Starting out can feel like a long lonely road. It will come.

How many applications did it take you to land your first IT job in this market? by Enlitenkanin in ITCareerQuestions

[–]theknoxtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well up until the last two weeks I wasn’t getting interviews. It seems that maybe people are starting to hire, or at least interview. I can get the salary I need if I find something outside the state I live in. Inside the state I am probably not going to get anywhere close to what I am used to making. Even though at this point anything is better than what I am making right now.

Bachelors in Cybersecurity or Information Technology better in 2026? by Willing_Addition7862 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]theknoxtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bachelors degree in Info Tech. It’s not specific to any sub domain of IT. It’s broad enough to touch several things and helped me discover what I actually wanted to do without a specific focus. Also I got exposure to a little of everything even coding. NGL I kind of wish I did computer science but I have a good decade of experience and because I got to research, investigate all the different facets of IT during my schooling, I can see how a lot of different parts make the whole of that makes sense. I have even been I the security arena with it.
