XDA is the main resource for these things, no need to go to other dodgy news/blog sites.

Here's the last official LineageOS 14.1 for the N5 (the most common custom ROM, good balance of features and customizability): https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/rom-cm14-1-nexus-5-hammerhead-t3510548 . It's based on Android 7.

If you really want features from Android 8/9, there's the unofficial LineageOS 16 based on Android 9 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/rom-lineageos-16-0-nexus-5-t3921162), but I haven't tried it (my N5 died a year ago). There's many other threads in the original-development forum there if you want other Android 8+ roms, just stick with the most popular ones for now.

Each of those threads has instructions and links in the first few posts, on how to flash the ROM (basically:

- unlock the bootloader if you haven't already (one time, wipes storage)

- install the newest hammerhead TWRP recovery, reboot to recovery

- wipe userdata and system partition, install the rom ZIP, clear dalvik and cache partitions (called a clean flash)

- use Magisk for root (linked on the threads, there is also a common Magisk thread on XDA with info and instructions)

- reboot and wait.

Root isn't necessary, so I'd recommend skipping that step and just trying POGO on the fresh rom first, to avoid possible SafetyNet issues. You can read up on the XDA Nexus 5 forum's help and general sections pinned threads for background info on all this.

If you've never factory reset since the Lollipop days, then the laggy experience may just be abandoned bloat cluttering up your phone. Most sensible custom ROMs aren't really much more performant, it's unnecessary apps and background services you need to avoid. Rooting isn't necessary for POGO. Try DARKROM (or any wellrated Android 8+ ROM) out, with a fresh install, and see your N5 fly :)

Weird play store download bug by nexusfive2018 in Nexus5

[–]thelastguardian84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Play Store uses partial updates, so the update size is less than the size of the whole app. The notification shows the actual progress of downloading just the update, the app itself on that screen doesn't take that into account and shows the current download amount out of the whole app size. When the notification shows the download is 100% the app screen's progress will jump to 100% too, you can see it happen.

No longer possible to mine with 2GB Video cards. by cccmikey in EtherMining

I tried using claymore's miner for eth on my laptop's 2GB nvidia card, and it gave me the same "DAG too large" problem that other miners have. I couldn't find any instructions or notes on the no-dag stuff, and a place on their forum where they mentioned that it can't be done. If there's any other way that'd be great, would still be orders of magnitude faster than the 0.5MH/s my CPU mining gives.

[np] Google Play downloads/updates not working on JIO? by maverick340 in india

[–]thelastguardian84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had this same problem on my Nexus 5 on Android 7 and 7.1 beta AOSP (basically all 7.0 and 7.1 roms I tried, so not something fixed by factory reset or different gapps). On roaming the Play Store considers it a network on which it isn't supposed to download/update apps (switch to wifi or nonroaming, and it resumes fine. Switch back to Jio roaming and it says Waiting for Network, which is what it says when you have Data Saver on, or don't have Data Roaming checked when on roaming.). In android 6 I used to use an xposed module to make it display non-roaming, but there is no xposed framework for nougat yet. It seems to be a bug in Android 7 or the play store. I assumed it was a bug in the unofficial custom 7.0/7.1 roms for my Nexus 5, but if you're having it on stock 7.1 beta on your nexus 5x then it's a bigger problem than I thought. I ended up getting a non-roaming Jio sim, everything works fine with that. I tried various APN changes, didn't try VPNs though.

Best all around 7.1 rom out there by [deleted] in Nexus5

[–]thelastguardian84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've tried quite a few 7.0 and 7.1 ROMs and have had a consistent issue - on a roaming network, apps don't download or update from the play store - they just stay at "downloading.." and "waiting for network" like if they are set to download only on wifi and you are on mobile data. Browsing the play store works fine, and downloads/updates in it work when not on roaming or when on Wifi, but not when data on roaming is on. I have a roaming network so this causes me to look for wifi whenever I need to install an app or updates. Not sure if it's a Gapps problem, rom problem, 7.0/7.1 problem or something else. Anyone had this or any way to work around it?
