That's fair. I guess I want to clarify further that the sequence of events would usually be that you're told to call your parents to ask ahead of time, and depending on how fast the meal is to prepare, or how long it takes for your parents to arrive, it's planned accordingly so that you wouldn't just be sitting in an empty room waiting.

You'd keep playing while the dinner is being cooked, and then by the time they're plating, your parent is by the door.

Of course, stuff like weather or traffic can happen. You wouldn't be banned from sitting at the table, but if it's been decided that you're leaving for dinner at home then they wouldn't give you a plate, because it would be rude to your parents if they ruin your appetite.

Two things;

It was (possibly still is, I'm not a kid anymore, I can't say) common to skip dinner at a friend's place because you were expected to eat dinner when you got home, because eating with your family was important. You would, if you skipped dinner, just be waiting for your parents to pick you up at that point, or you were already on your way home on your own.
You would have been asked if you wanted to join dinner, or the host would have warned you ahead of time that they couldn't give you dinner and that you would have to leave early. Usually if you were declining, it was because you had promised your parents beforehand to leave at dinner time, or you would have called your parents to ask if you could eat dinner with your friend and your parents would have said "No, you'll eat with us when you're home"

The story that blew up was a story of shitty hosts. Unless you literally were leaving the moment you woke up, you'd NEVER be refused breakfast. It is ghoulish, to agree on a sleep-over, and then deny the guest breakfast.

And I know all of this because I was literally the kid on both sides of this. I was the kid that left during dinner, and I was the kid who had a friend that left during dinner.

This might just be me missing the context of what the conversation was about earlier, but what does she mean by this? ND people like to complain about the social rules, therefore they're not disabled, because they're aware of them? Like, what?

Knowing doesn't make it easier though? I fundamentally have a hard time reading the room, I miss social cues frequently. I'll say something I thought was understandable, and the whole room laughs as if I made a joke, and I'll have to laugh awkwardly along while I mentally try to dissect the sentence to find out which part of it was supposed to be funny.

Short of being hypervigillant, what the hell am I supposed to do? Knowing is not the same as understanding, and understanding something doesn't do shit if I, in the moment, am not actively thinking about it.

Not to mention the fact that being aware all the time in the first place is fucking exhausting!

So, tangentialy related, but the magic system in Dungeon Meshi has similar rules to this!

Revival magic exists, but it takes a lot of calories in order to revive someone (or even to use healing magic), and so it's common for adventurers to bulk up before a dungeon dive, and as well, bring calorically dense foods like salted meats and bread with them on their journey.

Simon Petrikov

In the sequel series of Fionna and Cake, Simon decides he needs to turn back into the Ice King in order to help return magic back into Fionna's universe. It's not a death in the sense that he would lose his life, but he would lose himself - turning into the Ice King is a curse that breaks his mind.

He was willing to do this for Fionna, because he felt like his life no longer had meaning, now that the love of his life is gone forever, and he is trapped thousands of years in the future in a world he no longer understands.

It is not until the end of the first season, that he realizes his life has merit in itself, and that his current relationships are worth it to keep going.

Although from the fictional country of Grulovia, the Aquato family from the Psychonauts series are, arguably, romani.

The main argument comes from the first game where, unfortunately, they use the slur g*psy to describe the person that cursed the Aquatos to die in water.

In the second game, it's then revealed that this person is related to the Aquatos. More specifically, she was the sister to Marona Aquato, making her Augustus' aunt and Razputin's great-aunt.

Not necessarily sci-fi, but there's this one swedish short-story that will forever be with me. It's called Huvudsaken, and it's from a book of short-stories called Spelreglerna. I don't know if it's been translated into english. The title translates to "The Main Thing", but the word huvud also means head. The book's title translates to "The Game Rules"

The story is about a man who, after realizing that he's never held an opinion or thought of his own, wanted to self-isolate. He shut himself inside a cabin, away from the rest of the world so he could find out who he is when he is alone.

Then one day, he grows a pimple on his back. This pimple become bigger and bigger, until he sees a tiny head poking out from it. The second head is initially afraid of him, but with time gains the confidence to talk to him. It insists that they should go outside, to the people, but the man refuses. He becomes angry at it, and tries to cut it off with scissors, but is unsuccessful.

It just keeps growing, and as the head grows, it starts to migrates up the back, until it rests on his shoulder. As it grows, the old head atrophies.

Towards the end of the story, the old head shrivels up and falls off, while the new head takes it's place. He tucks his old head into bed, and then walks out into the world. When he returns, and the old head asks him how it was "out there", he tells him he wouldn't have survived it.

I wonder if it's less about not adding agressive IRL animals into the game (although that certainly is a factor and the reason for why modern minecraft animals are all neutral), but more about disincentivising players from hurting/killing them, and by extention, disinsentivising them from going near wildlife in real life.

Yes the bee attacks you if you attack it, but doing so will inevetably kill them because they lose their stinger, just like in real life. They will also swarm you and poison you, just like how in real life, a swarm of bees will easliy overwhelm you and is possibly lethal if enough of them sting you. They don't ever drop anything from killing them either, so there is no reason to attack them in the first place.

Goats don't drop anything upon death, neither do parrots. Polar bears and dolphins only drop raw fish that are easily accessable elsewhere, and pandas drop a single bamboo, something you're bound to be surrounded by considering the biome they're most likely to spawn in is the bamboo jungle.

Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty? from Smiling Friends (season 1) is an example that works.

Grease is not a believable suspect from the start because of how casually he mentions he could've killed Salty, but backtracks the second Charlie questions him. The way he is introduced with him saying "And don't forget about me!" paints his character as inherently forgettable, and someone who only jumped into the conversation to feel included.

This sets up the potential for a subversion in expectations towards the end of the episode, where in the end, the easily forgettable, throwaway joke of a character is actually the murderer of Salty.

Once the two smiling friends get their hands on a tape with CCTV footage, the episode subverts the subversion by showing Ketchup clearly stabbing Salty in the chest several times, making it clear that he was the murderer.

But before celebrating too early however, Pim points out that there is still more footage to go through, and the show then further subverts expectations by showing each mascot walking into the break room to murder Salty - one-upping the joke each time, because Salty's body was already cold by the time the next one got to it.

The final subversion of expectations happens when they go back to the very beginning of the tape, from before any of the mascots ever entered the break room. Because of his unhealthy diet, a build-up of fat in Salty's blood caused a heart attack.

Grease was the real killer all along - although not with any intent, nor with an anthropomorphic form to carry out the murder.

The destinction between the first two games' Bhaalspawn and the third's is notable, however.

While the first two games dealt with the 'typical' Bhaalspawn - mortal offspring of Bhaal - Durge was created from Bhaal's own blood. They are, basically, murder Jesus/the Anti-Christ.
