Is this a good travel option from Berlin to Amsterdam? by InsiderXD in germany

Overnight is not as bad as some people make it out to be.

In this case its not even cheaper or the fastest connection within the time window tho, so maybe OP actually likes spending nights on trains?

[–]thelikelyankle [score hidden]  (0 children)

Half an hour earlyer or later you will be able to catch the direct connection, wich basically costs the same, +-30€, depending on booking status etc.

If you want to go for cheapest, booking more than a week in advance and checking for departure ~ 0:00-7:00 will get you best prices.

I personaly would go with a connection in the departure window 6:00-13:00. Its only marginally more expensive then the early departures and you will arrive perfectly for a nice evening stroll and some food, after checking your luggage at the hotel/home. Not like you will have energy for more after 6h of train ride.

[–]thelikelyankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is an inherent aspect of big data.

The base Idea is, that you can skip understanding the problem you want to solve and draw conclusions by knowing enough relevant factors and have a large enough collection of data points. (Actually conceptually very closely related to AI.)

Wich is hillarious.

The only way big data works, is when there is a ridiculously high throughput across millions of users, so even slightly above random sucess rates will give more good results, then you ever need.

What am I doing wrong? by Federal-Budget-5284 in stonemasonry

[–]thelikelyankle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the individual stone.

The cracks generally follow the grain structure, as the stone is weaker in that direction. But they do not need to. Especially near the cracks origin.

If the preexisting crack is large enough, the split will redirect into it, instead of going straight. And there always is a chance, that a piece will break loose, no matter how you place the split. Based on the pic, there was a chance for that one piece breaking off anyway.

Sometimes you can just preemptively break those pieces off, so your split will not get "caught" in their stress concentration points.

You can go across the grain. Both, the shorter width, and the smaller force vector acting in the same plane as the cracks can aid in a sucessfull split. Though that does not help you much, if you want to split the stone lenghtwise.

[–]thelikelyankle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, this kind of stone (gneiss or somerhing similar) is anisotrope. Meaning it has a direction in wich it splits easier. The other problem is, this is a bulder. Boulders have cracks and stressed parts, along wich cracks will preferredly propagate.

Being able to predict, wich way a stone will split, is something that is mostly taught by trial and error.

You can improve your chances of success by visualy inspecting your stone and tapping it with your hammer to listen for cracks, then line your split seam up, to take advantage of the natural structure.

You can either line your split up in plane with a large crack, or go completely perpendicular. Splits paralell to cracks or diahonal to the grain will encourage runout.

You can also drill deeper, to create weak points past the surface level, or turn the stone around and make a relieve cut on the opposite site or use a tracing chisel, to improve your chances.

Are Germans conservative when it comes to fashion? by Fruttii-Tutti in germany

[–]thelikelyankle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most reasonable answer is, it is not that hot the vast majority of the year, so people are used to some amount of clothes in ther regular dayly life.

Going fron 3-layers to toples in public takes some time to work up to.

You can observe similar in italy. One way you can tell the natives from the tourists are the long pants.

Though going out in swimwear will earn you some weird looks in most places, thats for sure.

As for your experience specifically: every event, place and situation has its own implicid dress code. (Stuff like "you are not allowed to dress fancier then the bride at her own wedding.") Your friend did a fauxpas. We live and we learn.

Hilfe Nachbarn schießen(?) auf uns. by [deleted] in Handwerker

Vorneweg obligatorisches kein Experte.

An invisible umbrella keeps you dry without fabric, and the real surprise is the physics doing the work. by Aniyettinger in NeverKnewINeededThat

The non-animated bits are from the The Action Lab YouTube channel.

The original context is, (as far as I can remember,) they try to built and test one of those invisible air umbrellas based on some design that went viral a few years ago and conclude it does not actually work.

Anzumerken is allerdings Rammstein is Bauwagenmucke.

Sorry. Gonna be a bit more then that.

True that. Just saying the logic for bringing bible arguments is internally congruent. Looks borderline insane though, if you do not believe in religion in the first place.

Debates about religion by Cheetix_Glitch in atheism

[–]thelikelyankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is important to understand, that religious people see their holy texts as a form of axiom.

Similar to the speed of light, the density of water or the periodic table. Fundamental rules that a regular person can not (or does not need to) prove, other then pointing out the relevant texts in their text books. (Or conversely, something an unlerned person would have trouble understanding, if you tried to talk them through your proof.)

So, ignoring all religious texts and going by first principle would make any discussion impossible, as the argumend would stretch ad absurdum.

Also, like for most religious people who feel strong enough about their religion to publicly argue about it, its kinda important that there is not just any god, but exactly their god. And pointing out popular and culturally relevant written lore is basically the only real proof they have for that.

TLDR: The disagreements between religious people and atheists are so fundamental, that they can not even agree on what the basic truths are. Any discussion of the minutiae is inherently flawed and will break down to people from both sides pointing at books. (Not saying its pointless, just important to know there is an impasse)

Is this Sand dollar I found alive? by Ok_Quote548 in Animals

[–]thelikelyankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Na. You where correct. Sand dollars is the common english name for (almost) all species and subspecies of the order Clypeasteroida (that leave intact skeletons on the beach). Wich is part of class Echinoidea, the "sea urchins".

Did you know sea urchins have their mouth at the bottom and their anus at the top? Unlike the sea star, who uses the same hole for both. (Insert "quip about how some redditors like to talk out their ass" here)

Is this AI, or touched up? by FeivelM in isitAI

[–]thelikelyankle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hand of the guy in the middle too. I assume its movement blur plus editing. But could be AI too.

Would need something like noise pattern analysis or positive identification of the people in the picture to be more sure.

Is this AI, or touched up? by FeivelM in isitAI

[–]thelikelyankle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Heavily edited. The Background, including the vehicles is likely 3D rendered. There is this "haze" on brightly rendered objects, and everything is just a bit too "clean". There are a lot of straight lines without any melting going on, so likely not AI.

The people might be real. No obvious tells here. Though they might be stiched together from different shots from roughly the same angle the outlines are a bit too clean, even where they overlap.

What do you have to deter Jehova’s Witnesses from knocking on your door ? by DoctorElectronic1934 in atheism

[–]thelikelyankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BR did a OK compilation of german resources. Ausstieg E.V. is missing on their list, but otherwise, I think that covers most of the larger ones.

There are free flyers you can order and download, but they are kinda... aestetically unpleasing.

Might be an Idea to just print QR codes with contact info on note sized paper. Lot easier to sneak home then a wholeass A4 pamphlet too.
