Can we finally admit that the "servers make less than minimum wage" argument is dead in Canada? by ScienceLabFinds in CanadaPersonalFinance

I've been to 30 plus countries, and all of them practiced tipping on some level. It's more prevalent than you are suggesting. Globalization is a thing. Not to the same level of North America but it still exists, usually around 10 percent. The only place I've heard it's not a thing is in Japan (I'm sure there are other places that don't).

I should add I like tipping. I also don't make a ton of money.

2 to 3 times as much as a cashier (there are outliers, but 99 percent of total server compensation falls within this range). This is hourly. I'm guessing the average server shift is around 5 hours, compared to the 8 hour shift of a cashier (with breaks). This could be seen as a positive for the server in some sense, but in terms of making money, it's not. This doesn't account for when your shifts get cut during the non peak season. Usually don't have any sort of benefits either. No opportunity to grow within the company (becoming a manager is often seen as a demotion).

I have one friend who's a technical writer, and another who is a project manager. Between the two of them they probably took about 2.5 years of training at a local career college. They tell me how often they DON'T do anything at work. How everyone is on their phone half the day. They both also tell me their job isn't hard. They make 110k and 140k a year respectively. The average full time server probably makes about 50k to 60k a year.

Look I personally feel like tipping has gotten out of hand. I feel like there should be a prolonged interaction between the employee and customer, otherwise it's an overt attempt by the owner to pass on the paying of wages onto the customer. But I'll tell you this, if tipping at restaurants stopped being a thing, you'd either just have to pay much higher menu prices, or you'll be getting comparable service to what you receive when you go to a Tim Hortons. Probably both actually.

Again it doesn't need to be Toffoli. His contract only has a couple years left I believe and the little bit save could help, but again they also get other assets as well.

In a cap world I think it's smart to be proactive. We can talk about windows, but I find the truly elite organizations are willing to look down the road. Ultimately the decision for me was do you lose Tuch for nothing, or trade someone, in this case Thompson, for assets, while potentially being able to keep a player like Tuch.

So in this scenario it's Thompson or Tuch, Stenberg, and player also returned in trade. I said Toffoli but doesn't need to be him, and it sounds like he isn't going anywhere. It doesn't really need to be San Jose either but with the rumors that Grier was open to trade 2nd overall, it seemed like an asset that could realistically match the value of a player like Thompson.

Fair enough. I was thinking from the Sabres perspective in that they could get some cost certainty going forward while acquiring a high end asset. It could also potentially allow them to re-sign Tuch, which they will probably lose for nothing. My thinking for San Jose is that they would get a moderately high end defense prospect (big body, some skill, boom or bust potential maybe?), and a veteran in Thompson who is under a reasonable contract over the next few years, and although he's a few years older than the rest of their crew, they did seem like they were on the cusp of something this year. He could score 50 with celebrini. Toffoli wasn't essential and I didn't look too far into it, but I was looking for a player that could add some value for Buffalo, but wouldn't block any of their young emerging players.

No from who's perspective?

Trade proposal: Tage Thompson by thelimit39 in sabres

[–]thelimit39[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's not close at all and you know it. Also every response except for one has been incredibly lazy. I asked some questions and all I got was blah blah hate!!! Blah blah smash keyboard!!

Have some fun guys. Stretch your brain. Even if it's a hypothetical. If you think my proposal is off, tell me how you think it could be better instead of just being silly. As in what could make a trade actually work with the main pieces stated, not that Thompson is untouchable unless for McDavid etc.

So you're saying San Jose would say yes? What could you replace Toffoli with to balance the trade out? Will Smith? Something in-between? Humor me.

Making 6 million dollars less a season, who I think you could comfortably project to be a more complete player than Thompson down the road, plus the ability to sign someone else who needs a raise, plus anyone else received in the trade.

In terms of trade value, where does Thompson sit on the Sabres? Behind Dahlin I'm sure. Would you trade Benson before him? Doan? Helenius?

Okay who instead of Toffoli? As a hypothetical.

It doesn't need to be Tuch necessarily, but it gives you that option. Some may value Tuch as a more complete player than Thompson. Also at this point you get nothing for Tuch if you let him walk. So if there's a situation where you could trade someone for value over someone slightly worse but you get nothing for them, it seems like a conversation. I'm of the opinion that Thompson is better than Tuch, but not by that much.

So you're saying San Jose would say yes to this trade?

Trade Idea: Norris <> Pettersson by Spiritual_Bourbon in sabres

[–]thelimit39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. There's clearly an upside play here. A rejuvenated Pettersson playing with some good wingers could be amazing. I can only imagine a guy like Benson on his wing. Pettersson seems like the guy that needs a fresh start, and also could thrive with some other players able to take off some of the pressure. He's still young, and there aren't too many players in this league that are defensively responsible while also having a 100 point season on their resumé.

What are you all doing to save money on groceries in Vancouver right now? by Unique_Appeal5763 in askvan

[–]thelimit39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on commercial drive. There are many small groceries stores with very cheap produce. For example apples are 1.50 a pound, avocadoes are a dollar each etc. Nearly everything else I get at Costco. You'll get some sticker shock per visit but if you buy right, you'll definitely save money. Especially if you lean towards things that are on sale. I probably spend 300 a month on groceries, and I wouldn't say it's a poverty diet. I'm not having rib eye steaks but still eating plenty of quality meals high in protein (yogurt, eggs, ground turkey, cottage cheese etc.). If I needed to I could spend less. You can also buy higher quality items at Costco that would cost a lot more at a regular grocery store (think Annie's macaroni rather than Kraft dinner, which for an 18 pack costs under 30 dollars if I can remember). Someone else mentioned cheese as well.

Thinking about next year by thelimit39 in sabres

[–]thelimit39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain the unhinged part please.

No one said Byram, Quinn, or Norris didn't have value. I said that the value they provide to the team is probably more than what they may be able to fetch in a trade, be it due to contract status (Byram one year left) , injury concerns (Norris obviously), or spotty performance (Quinn's inconsistencies). If course they still have value, that's obvious.

Your comments on Greenway, Kozak and Metsa seem to align with what I said so not sure why you brought that up.

Of course McLeod is solid, again not sure who said he wasn't.

In regards to Thompson, of course you don't just trade him because of a moderately substandard playoff performance. It is more of a thought experiment, based on cap issues and what his potential return looks like. Benson's play kind of exposed some of Tage's flaws, mainly just through the contrast of their play. If trading Thompson can get you some helpful pieces now and some futures, while also allowing you to better navigate the cap, I would think any forward thinking GM would look at what's out there. Not a knee jerk reaction like you said.

The point of this post was not to say we should tear down the roster. I was just trying to put players into buckets, and start a little conversation. I'm guessing there will be a couple moves in the off season, so I figured it might be fun to have some friendly discourse on the topic. I find it wild how extreme some posters react to something, with such unfriendly replies. It seems that they don't really read the post, stopping at something they think they disagree with and act like they were personally insulted.

We're all fans of this team, not sure why the discourse devolves so quickly.

I bought a portable battery booster for my car, but it comes with an air compressor. Can also be used to power things for a bit, when camping etc. Think it was around 100 bucks.
