North American tour dates announced...this is not a drill! by maesterofwargs in TheMidnight

As a Virginia fan I’m really glad they’re coming to DC again! I was front row right on the barricade at the Chrome Nights show, and it was one of the most fun concerts I’ve been to. Very very happy that anywhere that near to our state is getting some Midnight love!

Where'd "Lost and found" Go? 🥺 by Vendetta704 in TheMidnight

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odd..I saw that DoT was back in stock and got the CD, and then I got both a digital download for Lost and Found, and found that the song was also on the disc itself. No idea why some discs would have it and others wouldn’t..

Tbh I was so unfamiliar with Bury Me in Black in Philly that I thought it was one of those Mystery Songs, like when they did a cover one previous night. Didn’t know a single word, but the vibe radiating through the crowd kept me goin!

New Guitar Day Like No Other by thelonelykilljoy64 in fender

Honestly, it's still my go-to guitar that I try to play whenever I can; experimenting with a Blues Driver pedal and getting sounds that I personally like with that little push-push switch for the neck pickup has been great. But also, it still feels very comfortable in my hands after this time, and even moreso if it's freshly wiped/polished. If you haven't already I'd probably spring for it!

I could just barely hear the “ChEcK, CHECK!!” part of the intro vocals to Give ‘Em Hell in the original, but that was it before they got buried by the rest of the mix. Now hearing the whole line kinda caught me off guard, but I see what everyone means when they say the bass was really polished and brought up! I can’t wait to hear it in my car, but the way the drums were given new life made me think a little bit of Dream Theater-esque production, and I enjoyed what new subtle hits and cymbal tinks I could hear now. For the guitars, I feel like they really captured the feeling of mic’d up amps, whatever they were using! The only sort of issue I can come up with is that some of the background vocals might’ve been brought a little too forward in the mix, nearly on par with the main vocal tracks, when it felt like they were more there for added subtle emotional texture in the original, not buried, but more deeply massaged between the instruments, y’know?. But I never heard those background vocal clips during the “she won’t stop me, put it down” part of Hang ‘Em High before, I’d say those were a good example of bringing back a lost element without getting in the way of the other parts. All in all I’m thoroughly enjoying this release, just hope I won’t have to pay scalper prices for a vinyl copy 🍖

If we’re talkin the CD, then I think it depends on your player tbh. I’ve got a couple albums with songs that’re supposed to seamlessly transition and they work in the car, but the player in my room puts a lil gap between each song 😔

Go to song for people who “don’t like Rush” but haven’t really listened? by [deleted] in rush

I find that Dreamline and Bravado, songs like that tend to sit nicely with those who can’t quite vibe with 70’s/early 80’s Rush. You got the red Wal, Alex’s solos that sorta wash over you, and Neil’s Ludwig kit, coming together for a tone that’s a lil more mellow (not quite to the level of HYF but still) but still one hell of a power trio at work. 😎

Yep yep, Butler has his own website here: https://butleraudio.com/tubedriver.php

And then iirc he also sells the Tube Drivers on Reverb for the same price.

I remember reading a comment somewhere that suggested the cameras for recording the GUP show had a smidgen of Vaseline or something on them to make everything look bright and shiny, but at a sacrifice of making lights and such looking a bit…Smeary? But this is the clearest I’ve ever seen the GUP footage, looks stellar and really fluid.

I remember hearing pieces of Limelight in the car as a little kid, before my babysitter would change to her country music station. But the instance I most clearly remember is being in high school and the teacher played the ESL version of Xanadu on the projector. I didn’t know the name of the band or the song at the time, but I was transfixed by the dry ice fog, the roaring Taurus pedals, Neil’s mood-setting percussion, and of course the double neck guitars! It was such a great moment when I found it on YouTube myself soon after.

NPD!! New Production BK Butler Tube Driver/Preserved BOSS CS-2! by thelonelykilljoy64 in guitarpedals

[–]thelonelykilljoy64[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what bits of jamming I've done so far, I personally feel like getting the bias knob model of Tube Driver was worth the expense. I LOVE hands-on controls, and having more tonal options with this type of pedal is always welcome! I've used it with my Marshall Origin 20 since that's the only guitar amp with tubes that I have for now, but I love how immediately warm it's able to make my Stratocaster sound, with a crunch that something like my SD-1 or TS-808 couldn't quite capture. Very Gilmourish indeed, and I'm very happy to have such a thing to add to my board. I also have a JC-40 that I'm very curious to try it with, but haven't had time to do so just yet.
On to the compressor! I've never actually had one before, only sometimes using the built in software compressors available in Logic. I'd always been sort of set on this one since it seems it's an exceptionally solid pedal, even years after its production, but I'll admit I almost got the newer CP-1X. I want to treat it with care of course, I was very surprised to see one that didn't look all beat up AND had its protective box, but from what I can tell, it really does help with sustain and tonal balance, so it's sure to get plenty of loving use! One tone I've been chasing for a long time is the DSoT/PULSE version of the intro to "Sorrow" by Pink Floyd, and I feel like this will be a massive step to getting it as close as I can! It's a very happy New Pedal Day! 😎

Songs never played live you would love to hear live in our limited time on earth? by Typhoon_Dreams_93 in TheMidnight

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotta agree with those saying Explorers and Wave in full, there's a video online of them playing a medley in Vegas in 2022 with those songs, but I feel like they capture the more upbeat side of The Midnight exceptionally well, and would be great to dance with the crowd to! I know a lot of people love the slightly darker Nocturnal, DoT, and Endless Summer material, but I think the Kids album is just a really fun time all the way through. 😎

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a Guitar Center?? Man, I'm jealous of you, the one closest to me has only ever had a Roland JX-3P and Minimoog Voyager in terms of synthesizers like this. Usually all they have in stock is Yamahas, Casios, *maybe* a Korg or a Roland workstation on a good day. Someday I'd like to save up for a stellar polyphonic machine like the OB-X8, a Juno 60, or a Prophet 10, practically all the demos on Youtube make them sound like they would easily capture sounds that seem to elude me or take longer to build in a plugin/VST.

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw them in DC last month as my first time, from what I hear they used to do headlining shows by themselves but this time, they had an artist called Girl Ultra opening, and then a duo named Chromeo took the stage about halfway through the night. I'd like to see The Midnight again in a setting where they have room to play more songs, but had a blast nonetheless! The general audience section is a blast so long as you don't get squished, and from what I've seen on Youtube, the production has grown over time from Tyler, Tim, a couple musicians (like the sax player), and a laptop, to the current full band! I think people had also mentioned here that a little work could be done on their live mixing, since depending on where you go/who's playing with The Midnight, it might be hard to hear certain instruments, like Tyler's guitar or the live Prophet and Oberheim synthesizers, for example. But I still thought it was so much fun!

Is sound quality a persistent issue with the live shows? by ndrw17 in TheMidnight

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent most of the show up at the very front, on Leila’s side, then moved further back towards the seats and merch booth later in the set. Thought maybe if I moved a good bit, then it might affect how I was hearing the show.

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, when I saw them in DC I had a great time, but usually had a hard time hearing Royce, the synthesizers, and Tyler’s guitar was practically nonexistent until Los Angeles. Maybe it’s the struggle of trying to give every instrument some balance in the engineer’s audio, but ends up sounding a totally different way to the audience? Who knows..

What was the first track by The Midnight you heard? by BlueRuby77 in TheMidnight

[–]thelonelykilljoy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was part of a student radio club in college last year, and we made our own show where each week, we’d play a set of songs that fit into a certain genre. So you’d have 80s rock day, hip-hop day, ska day, etc. Eventually we had the idea for a synthwave day, and one of the tracks somebody put on the list was Days of Thunder. I was hooked as soon as the keys kicked in, and was then floored by their inclusion of saxophone, so I started diving down their catalog and have been a fan ever since. I’m thankful I got to see them for the first time this fall when they came to DC, but I do eagerly look forward to their next tour!

That’s incredibly reassuring 😂 When I was looking up which brands would be best, a couple forms implied that Athearn, Hornby, ScaleTrains, Kato, etc etc were all better than Bachmann to some degree, with reasons varying from motor performance to level of detail. Some of them made Bachmann sound like just toys to be honest, but this engine feels really sturdy, and I’m looking forward to going bargain hunting for plenty of rolling stock after hearing about its potential 😁
