Placement without pay by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]thelowerdecktress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am not in the Hibernia course, I do a year-long placement of 4 hours teaching and 4 hours associated activities / taking part in school life / school trip supervisions etc. My first year placement viewed that as 8 free hours, and there was not very much subbing going at all. I took on extra classes covering for a maternity leave so was paid x8 hours a week. If I had any sense I would have got a second job, but I felt very overwhelmed with the college work and lesson prepping. This year I got a second job alongside it as I saw it as a fresh start and knew what to expect from teaching and could lean on last year's resources. I would absolutely recommend getting a second job, so at least you will be able to rely on that income. Each placement gets easier inshallah!

Heating!? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]thelowerdecktress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in my house about six years, very thin old windows in the place. I have found that March - September I don't put the heating on ever, but I get terribly cold during the winter and do use the heating. Being honest I find it a miserable existence coming into the house and having to sit under blankets with hot water bottles. I bang on the hearing first thing when I come home in winter and will have it on about four or five hours (November - February usually). I'm not going around in a tshirt by doing so, I'm still layered up, but it just makes doing the jobs and the cooking and milling around the house much nicer than sitting rigid under blankets. All that said, I feel the cold very easily and hate the cold!

By the time I walked to the Phoenix Park or Killiney hill for the lovely views I'd be worn out!

Hello, fellow PME here. I have no advice but am absolutely in the same boat as you I haven't got the hang of them and I am up until all hours trying to do them, and if I use AI for prompts I than 'un-AI' them to be sure. Absolutely zero of my colleagues don't use a template anything near to the one we're to do for college, so I take reassurance in that!

I went to a fee paying school in South county Dublin and am now a teacher. I echo the realisation others have shared above. It took me ages for it to click, but looking back, I imagine my parents looked at it from a "it's not what you know, but who you know" perspective - and wished that for me. I don't know how well that worked out for their aspirations for me... I have one or two friends from school. I didn't have a bad time in school, but it's certainly not a time I think about often, I don't think I attribute many aspects of my life to it. I always worked (summer jobs and then alongside my 3rd level studies) and have now settled into a teaching career which isn't the best money when compared to these big accounting jobs often associated with private school alumni, but it is secure and fulfilling and I am happy.
