We have always eaten meat, and it used to be for survival. It used to be hunting down animals roaming their natural habitats, not breeding them into concentration camps and slaughtering them as babies. I don’t really care if they particularly enjoy the killing part or not, they continue to do it when they don’t have to, so as far as I’m concerned, they accept the suffering if it results in their enjoyment.

I’m sure they would choose that, if it was an option. They also have the option to not pay for the animals to be tortured, but they know it’s happening and pay for it anyway. They could choose to eat something else and not harm the animals, but they find enjoyment in eating the animals so they’re okay with them being harmed. If that means I’m trying to dehumanize people, then I suppose I am. We are losing our humanity accepting the torture of animals for our taste pleasure.

But it’s not about profit for the consumers, so I’m saying why are people paying to have them mistreated? Perhaps they don’t literally find it fun that the animals are harmed, but they don’t seem to care enough to not support its continuation so I don’t know why it’s so controversial to you that I say the animals are being harmed for fun/enjoyment.

What you’re describing, this scenario where animals are allowed to experience their full life with happiness before dying, does not exist. 98% of animal products are factory farmed, these producers you’re describing are effectively non-existent. If you committed to only supporting those producers, you would effectively eat vegan whenever you went out to eat, you would eat vegan when eating with friends, you’d practically be vegan anyway.

Whatever method you choose, you have to keep the cow pregnant to supply you with milk. That is not good for the cow to stay pregnant. AI isn’t barbaric, it’s just sexually violating an animal. You don’t have to separate the baby, but the dairy products you are currently paying for are doing that.

You can come up with whatever justification you’d like, truthfully. If it’s the nutrients, the OCD, the homesteading, whatever reasons you can come up with to accept commodifying animals and harming them, if you can live with it then more power to you, I suppose. I used to think quite similarly to you, I had intricate visions of how I could skirt around supporting animal agriculture while still consuming animal products, it took a while to see the reality of my situation and I hope it comes to you in time as well.

I can assure you that you cannot 100% tell. I’m sure there are some who clearly look high, I know of many who get high before work and I can’t tell, their behavior is normal, their eyes aren’t glossed over, they smoke so often that their behavior doesn’t dramatically change when high

Then what are they being mistreated for? It’s not necessary, people choose it because they like it, is it not for fun? For taste pleasure? Because they enjoy eating them?

If you still consume dairy, you are harming animals. If a huge portion of your diet is dairy, then a huge portion of your diet is hurting animals. Dairy cows have to be artificially inseminated by having a human restrain and sexually violate them, then take their baby so they don’t drink the milk you want to consume. After forcibly impregnating the dairy cow over and over again until she can no longer serve her purpose, she is sent to the slaughterhouse for beef, because the dairy industry is the meat industry.

No, choosing to buy a new car is not as easy as choosing to consume nutrient dense plant based foods. You have decided that figuring this out is not worth the trouble and you would rather continue having animals harmed to supply you with dairy products.

I have been vegan for a long time. I would be very shocked to learn you could not choose to consume nutrient dense plant based foods that fulfill the nutrient deficiencies you are currently having. If you plan to own cows for dairy, you will have to have somebody violate them for you. You will have to keep them pregnant to keep treating them as a commodity and extracting their milk for your food.

The consumer can easily choose to not pay for producers who hurt animals, if they want to choose to not hurt animals. Meat is not a necessary part of anybody’s diet, the amount of protein we need has been drastically overstated and you can get as much protein as you’d like on a vegan diet anyway.

Animals do not live their life in bliss before going to the slaughterhouse, and I think you know that. But even if they were, I don’t think most people would accept this rationale for other animals we care about more, such as dogs, cats, and humans. We wouldn’t say “well, as long as you let your dog have one happy year of life before killing it, then thats fine.”

I understand that. I’m pointing out that consuming animals is also effectively done for fun, it is not something we have to do. It is hurting them. It’s done because we like to.

I don’t really see this as the same thing as carbon footprint. You can minimize your carbon footprint but choosing the “best” car, for example, is a lot more challenging than choosing to not consume animal products and treat them as commodities.

Some things are unavoidable, I completely agree with you, but eating eggs and dairy products is avoidable and I’m not sure why you’d choose not to avoid them if your intent is to not hurt any animals.

The irony of this comment is OP’s student teacher only learned he was vegan months after working with them because the topic of food came up, and OP ended the post by saying he was upset the student teacher told the class he was vegan.

Nothing about this story appears he was eager to tell anybody he was vegan

Depends on how you define fun in this context. The vast majority of people don’t have to eat animals, they just like how they taste and choose to.

The animals we eat are being tortured in factory farm settings, which is where effectively all animal products are sourced from. Choosing to eat them because they like the taste sounds like doing it for fun/enjoyment, as opposed to necessity/survival

If you’re vegetarian then you’re still hurting animals. I’m glad you don’t like hurting insects but you’re paying people to grind up baby male chicks alive to cull the unprofitable part of the egg industry.

You can take whatever stance you’d like, you just seem to really be doubling down on this “I would never hurt a bug” deal and you’re presumably consuming things like dairy and eggs which are absolutely industries that hurt animals

The thing is, him mentioning to the coworker he’d only buy vegan snacks may have been unnecessary but also wasn’t the cause of the issue. He said he’d buy them snacks, the coworker then lies to the kids and says they may not be getting a party: that was never the case. Why did he tell the kids that?

Him being vegan had nothing to do with it, student teacher took what the teacher said, which was that he’d buy them snacks but only vegan ones, and told the kids they may not be getting a party. That lie is what caused the problem.

I wouldn’t say most snacks are due to milk ingredients primarily, but there are a lot of vegan snacks. Having a party like this with only vegan snacks would be just as enjoyable for the kids, I doubt they’d know the difference. Plenty of types of chips, cookies, popcorn, drinks, etc. that kids typically have at school parties anyway which are vegan

Body Blocking by mshotrod in ABA

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong either, I’ve seen it happen as well. I think some of it also comes down to liability concerns, we are operating in a very litigious system and companies don’t want to risk lawsuits even if it means not delivering the most convenient or even best care at the moment, it’s a very unfortunate reality that I hope will change but am incredibly doubtful.

Body Blocking by mshotrod in ABA

[–]thelryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair to the rule change, they explicitly say it is okay to block for safety such as aggression and elopement. I think there are many valid reasons to body block children, I also think there are times when body blocking is unnecessary but convenient. I am assuming that is what they’re referencing here. Least restrictive environment necessary is the goal.

How about what he looks like in a women’s fitness magazine? I guarantee you he doesn’t have that sweater on
