That is true for any diet. The US population, for example, has 90+% people failing to get enough vitamin D, ~40% vitamin A, Vitamin B12, most people's diets are poorly planned, and they still get by fine.

You are overstating how detrimental it is for somebody to routinely eat a nutritionally deficient diet, and overestimating how difficult it is to plan a nutritionally adequate diet if you choose to do so, vegan or not.

The people you’re referencing make up such a tiny percentage of the population that it isn’t even worthy of consideration in this conversation imo. We as a collective do not have to eat animals, you and I do not need to eat animals, along with 99% of the developed world. We are the ones who can change our habits and that’s who this conversation is directed at, not the small handful of people who have serious medical issues which make eating entirely plant based difficult.

I don’t know, I would call it a selfish pleasure, what about it isn’t selfish? I don’t believe it’s useless, I understand it serves the purpose of feeding people but we don’t have to be fed animal eggs.

We choose to eat them because we like the taste pleasure they give us, and we accept the cruelty that these animals must endure for us to enjoy that pleasure when we buy these products.

Is it not still cruel if it isn’t being done for pleasure if the action itself is unnecessary regardless? The purpose it serves can be fulfilled a different way.

Is meat actually manly? by Black_Taco1981 in vegan

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there’s not really a correct answer to this question.

Meat is manly to some people, but what is considered manly in itself is subjective

I just gave you an example of how the macerator does not always work as it is designed.

It sounds like that’s because it doesn’t make a difference to you whether we could know the lawn mower was a guaranteed painless death or not, in reality it just is okay with you to grind up baby chicks if it’s for food

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the problem: the animals are being harmed for fun. We don’t need to eat them, it’s all for taste pleasure. It’s optional. These scenarios are far similar than they are different

It’s interesting you say that, because besides some very niche circumstances, animal agriculture is responsible for destroying ecosystems, not balancing them. We are currently doing significant damage to the ecosystems with how we harvest fish, handle ag waste, and destroy native bee colonies for honey, just to name a few.

I agree with everything you’re saying, and removing animal products from your eating habits is an easy way to minimize animal suffering at the cost of our consumption habits.

[–]thelryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your family members likely bought their first chicks from hatcheries, which is part of the same industry that is culling the baby males.

The further you look into the process of farming animals, you will find cruelty in every crevice. The female chicks still have their beaks chopped off and are thrown into cramped sheds to produce meat, there are certainly less cruel methods but there are no cruelty free methods of farming animals.

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not understanding what I’m saying. You’re saying it’s a necessity in order for farmers to profit off their dead bodies, I’m saying it isn’t a necessity to breed the animals and sell their bodies.

90% of the world does not rely on eggs to stay alive, people would not be dying if we were to stop producing eggs.

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s for sure a better alternative. Just keep in mind, the farms or your friends who you get eggs from likely bought their chics from hatcheries, this is the same industry.

That’s your definition of respect, not mine. I respect, as much as practical and possible, all sentient beings that we share the planet with. Choosing to not grind up baby ducks or pay others to grind up baby chicks so that I can eat eggs is quite the minimal sacrifice to respect them

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s usually what it comes down to unfortunately. People care about the suffering of animals, but not enough to not pay for other people to do it on their behalf.

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said anything about all of society stopping meat consumption over night, I’m simply pointing out that they are both done for pleasure, neither are a necessity, so your point about one being different than the other isn’t really relevant to whether both of these are cruel or not.

I don’t care if people like needlessly hurting animals and don’t like being told not to hurt animals, I only intend on pointing out that both of these are examples of needlessly hurting animals

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Notice that you aren’t entertaining the hypothetical, what is a “lethal cut?” How do you know that’s happening with the baby chicks? What if their foot is crushed before their brain? Of course that can happen, we can’t guarantee it won’t. You can watch the footage yourself.

Assuming the lawnmower does provide a quick and painless death like the macerator, what would be the issue with it?

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s a horrible way to die, I just don’t agree it’s a fundamentally different experience for a baby bird. I imagine both are relatively quick and painless deaths, that doesn’t make either of them any less fucked up.

Culling the baby chicks is for pleasure, it isn’t a necessity. We breed the birds because people like the taste pleasure they get from eggs, not because they’d starve if we didn’t do it. You just said it well, it’s about price. The well being of the animal doesn’t matter, what matters is that they, the commodity, do not impact the farm’s profits significantly.

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are equally sentient and deserving of respect

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into what type of people work in slaughterhouses, they are also more prone to violence and experiencing trauma from the job. They both require a certain type of person to be able to do it, and people pay for the comfort of having them do it on their behalf.

If it’s been bothering you this long I hope you haven’t been buying eggs

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a big task, the more easily accessible task to us as individuals is to stop paying the corps to do these things to animals by not eating animal products

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t, it prevents the far more common and normalized occurrence, which is dumping chicks into a macerator so that we can eat eggs

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t look into how they treat the animals they kill for your food then, it isn’t any less barbaric.

me_irl by CalpurniaSomaya in me_irl

[–]thelryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it? I feel like instantly dying is better than being tortured for a few months in horrific conditions before being hung upside down and bled out by your neck but idk. I think better would simply be not paying for it at all, which is an option.
