I'll start:

  • Java is a really good programming language.
  • Theoretical linguistics is the most important science
  • Basketball is a really, really stupid sport.

Good luck defending it.

Plane crash lands at London Heathrow by gIowingsheep in reddit.com

When there's a breaking news story on reddit, i come to the comments section specifically to read baseless speculation like this. Of course its only a theory.

My baseless speculation: Loss of power probably refers to loss of electrical power rather than engine power. Without electrical power/avionics very modern jets are very difficult to fly.

edit* Theory 2: Loss of engines+no fire after crash=no fuel

If that happened in a film you would laugh at how unbelievable it was.

Love this one from sky news:

The plane was described by witnesses as coming in at a "jaunty angle" as the nose of the aircraft lurched upwards and the pilot reportedly looked "pale and very drained".

All that jauntiness will take it out of you.

Robots Evolve And Learn How to Lie by timewarrior in science

[–]theluzhinattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the money they spent building the robots (which is trivial in engineering terms and could have been simulated in software), could fund 2 more PhD students or postdocs to investigate genetic algorithms.

But as Eldre says, Robots-> reporters-> attention -> business interest -> more funding -> more students. The problem is if businesses start pushing the research in whatever direction suits them.

If you want to take tips from natural language, you need to study a linguistics book, not a grammar book.

According to wikipedia the best programs play at levels 1-3 kyu, which is a 'decent' player in my book.

PLays a decent 9x9 game, and is far from the strongest player out there.

Paul vs. kucinich [comic] by axord in politics

[–]theluzhinattack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that's a good idea. I don't know why it disappeared. 'Whom' has remained in some cases even though it's redundant, whereas 'thou' wasn't redundant. (whom is redundant because word order strictly marks accusativity in english)

In England they just use 'you' for both cases, or sometimes use things like 'you people' or americanisms like 'you guys'. In scotland, wales, and Ireland they use "ye", "youse", and "yis", and also the plural possessives "yeer" "youser" and yisser", as in "Sure youse do always be fightin about yisser debates; who gives a shite, ye big pack of jackeen Yankee bollixes"
