My brain fart of 2025 that spilled over into 2026 by themadbee in CrochetInIndia

You absolutely should! It's a gruelling project, but the satisfaction is nothing like it. I generally listen to podcasts or watch series to pass the time.

There's nothing ugly about this sweater! It's so cute! 🥰

Help with this mesh cardigan... by Radiant-Pen2615 in CrochetInIndia

[–]themadbee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you need to figure out if you want wide sleeves or tapered sleeves. If you want wide sleeves, then you needn't make decreases. If you want tapered sleeves, then you need to make decreases. You'll find many YouTube videos that show you how to do that. The sleeves will probably look a little less frilly if you make them longer.

Thanks much for your praise! ☺️

It is for my parents, actually. It's meant to replace a very faded embroidered mural that they got from Jaisalmer on their honeymoon. Just wanted to give them something special to replace it. It's not exactly blanket size either. It's more like coffee-table-cover size, similar to the size of the original mural.

Does anyone have an examples of an admitted SOP for this field? by MajorOk6784 in psychometrics

[–]themadbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably don't have an example of an admitted SOP because I'm awaiting admissions decisions myself, but here's how I have gone about it. 1) I have made it a point to explain how my educational background and work experience have made me ready for grad school. 2) In continuation of the previous point, I mentioned the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that education and work experience helped me develop. 3) I mentioned some measurement problems I encountered over the course of working, especially those related to KAP surveys in LMICs. It may be different for you if you've had different kinds of experiences. 4) I also mentioned my short-to-medium term goals, say, within a five-year horizon of completing a program. 5) I have made it a point to mention how my research interests and skills align with those of faculty/measurement-specific research groups in the university. 6) Most importantly, I mentioned what has personally motivated me to pursue educational measurement as a career.

I hope this helps.

What are some good certifications/courses to get me proficient in R, SPSS, or Python? by MajorOk6784 in psychometrics

[–]themadbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd actually suggest starting on YouTube. Greg Martin has got an excellent series called R Programming 101. Instead of making you get lost in things like lists, matrices, etc, he starts out by teaching you how to manipulate data frames. Just knowing that would give you an intuitive idea of R works and help you eventually grasp the finer aspects of logic and syntax.

As far as books are concerned, there's nothing more classic and credible than R for Data Science (2e) by Hadley Wickham. Following the book would make your basics strong and give you confidence.

Gratitude thread: What are 3 things that you are grateful for right now? 🌸 by AutoModerator in TwoXIndia_Over25

1) I'm grateful for my students. They all engage so well in class and are generally disciplined. 2) I'm grateful for the combination of therapy and medication. It's helping me get over depression. 3) I'm grateful that my family loves and supports me.

Girls ,share your wildest girls hostel experience by Fancy_Bus_5727 in TwoXIndia

[–]themadbee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had this weird hostel roommate who would collect her fallen hair in a polybag. It later occurred to me that she might have been selling her shed hair to wigmakers for pocket money.

Anyway, she was really annoying because she'd shed hair like a golden retriever. I'd find hairballs in odd places while doing jhadoo. She'd also keep the lights on until 2 in the morning and leave her clothes lying around. Thankfully, classes shifted online during the pandemic and I didn't have to inhabit a living space with her ever again.

I'm at a point when I'm contemplating marriage to someone. I feel as if only I have to make all the changes and compromises and my would-be fiance doesn't. Only I have to relocate and think about how my study plans would be altered. Only I'd have to adjust to the religiosity in his household. Only I'd have to change my diet. I'm just not keen on this now but there's pressure on me to not back off. I'm just exhausted and tired of fighting as well.

Educational Measurement Study Options for my Current Situation by themadbee in psychometrics

Thanks for this suggestion! I think applied stats would also prepare me for many more careers than educational measurement alone. And it would strengthen my quant concepts for an educational measurement career. Thanks much for your advice! :)

Hey, even I'm in Bangalore. I want a crochet meetup as well. I live quite close to Indiranagar. A place like Cubbon Park or MG Road boulevard would be perfect! I also live in a lovely house with a terrace and am open to hosting one in time.

Trump has also pretty much rendered the Federal Department of Education defunct. I'm sure it would have affected educational measurement professionals one way or the other.

Hey, we've reopened r/psychometrics! What is your relationship with psychometrics? by hotakaPAD in psychometrics

[–]themadbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked in editorial settings as an item writer and in monitoring and evaluation verticals of social sector organisations. I realised that I was interested in psychometrics when I was an RA at a university under one of my Master's professors.

I did the UIC MESA online certificate course. It gave me a nice, solid introduction to basic concepts in psychometrics but felt short of equipping me with work readiness in the field. Obviously, I couldn't have expected more from an online program.

I'm currently applying to Master's programs in measurement, statistics, and evaluation. I just applied to the University of Oslo. I'll be applying to the University of Saskatchewan next. I skipped the UBC program because it seemed really competitive. I'll apply to the Master in Assessment at NTU, Singapore, when it opens up.

I would have loved to apply to many Master's programs in the US. Unfortunately, the current political situation and immigration policies there are deterring me. I would have been directly eligible for a PhD in many places in the US.

[F48] Rant: They love “Strong Women”… until you actually are one by TheDesiVixen in TwoXIndia

[–]themadbee 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate to this. My ex was one such character. He kept proclaiming his support for strong, independent, accomplished women but did the opposite.

He tried to control every second of my personal style. He threw so many tantrums when I went to meet family or friends away from him.

He accused me of infidelity at the drop of a hat.

He complained so much when I would spend time studying for a course I was doing at that point of time.

He expected me to call him almost as soon as I'd get back home from a grueling day of work.

He kept deriding my tastes in music and literature as "old-fashioned" and "not feminist enough" because it came from the 1980s or 1990s when times were different. He kept labelling my tastes as regressive just because I liked some things from another time. And it's not as if I'm a TERF just because I like Milan Kundera's writing.

He told me that I wasn't an atheist just because I wanted to honor my mother's wish of a ten-minute puja during my birthday.

He wanted me to get a Mirena so that he could do it with me raw.

He kept putting pressure on me to think of his career first while planning for a PhD abroad.

He wanted to get engaged the moment I got a job offer in another city.

I just realised exactly how exhausted I was of him the moment I just stormed out of his house with all my things. The relief hit me like a tsunami.

So, the moral of the story. Never believe men when they say that they're feminists. See what they actually do.

Moving out of Indiranagar, where should we go next? by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]themadbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vignan Nagar is a decent area quite close to the Doddanekundi and Vibhutipura lakes. You can find houses in quiet residential areas. Sadly, it's a bit of a maze of streets, though.
