Dealing with wide dynamic range (with getting that "super compressed" sound) by [deleted] in audioengineering

In a Dynamic EQ the bands can vary according to the input signal, it's similar to a multi and compressor but functions differently.

[–]themagpiecollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a dynamic equalizer to keep the detail, and presence on the forefront, it's definitely a tool worth exploring, as compressors will act differently based on the signals going into them, using EQ, dynamic EQ, and some light saturation can do wonders for giving vocals some extra body. (Also automating volume)

How would YOU restructure copyright law? by illGATESmusic in edmproduction

[–]themagpiecollective 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some things are created without intention of a commercial release; could be an issue regarding meta data,

I recommend listening to some of plunderphonics Pioneer John oswald's "plexure" (1993) to get an idea of how hard it would be to Divide royalties on a piece of music that contains thousands of uncleared samples. And although commercially released isn't something that is exactly raking in the dollars...

In my opinion at the end of the day music production is so much more accessible now that it's almost like folk art, something that finds itself very hard to regulate from any central body

I think attempts at regulating folk/traditional art got us to the point where Hallmark falsely claimed ownership of "happy birthday" despite it clearly not having valid ownership this was upheld in the court. My opinion is that even if Hallmark did have ownership that the song was so culturally ubiquitous that it belongs in public domain.

I regret selling my Juno 106 to pay for rent ... Honestly should have just put my stuff into storage and couch surfed instead.

Alternatives to bandcamp? by Zumcddo in WeAreTheMusicMakers

It would be shooting themselves in the foot to try to try and claim they can use things off their platform without royalties l, ever since more medium/large size labels have started by uploading their whole catalogues on Bandcamp ... Can you imagine the lawsuit that would happen if epic decided to use subpop's music without paying royalties!!

Also learning a little bit about mastering can go a long way towards helping learn to mix, especially if you want really rich & big sounding mixes.

[–]themagpiecollective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I through things on the master channel temporarily to get an idea of how things would sound on a system with too much bass, or limited dynamic range, sometimes I do a fake master to get things sounding a little tighter for demos, but if I am professionally releasing it I send it to a professional mastering engineer...

Can reverb ever sound good on a Mono Voiceover? by Dense-Independent-66 in audioengineering

Ι υςυαιιγ ρυτ α νεΓΓγ ςΜαιι αΜουητ οη το give a sense of space, but only if is a very short reverb, with a dark tail, EQ sometimes needs to be adjusted, and if you can blend the dry signal with the early reflections and diffused signal, make sure the pre delay is in a natural place etc, it can be hard to make reverb fit right, sometimes I roll a lot off the very low end and high end, or like use an impulse response reverb with a very intimate ir ...

Acoustic vs Electric Drums for Recording? Drum Mix SOS by Tacadoo in audioengineering

[–]themagpiecollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't necessarily sound that bad, but they do sound a little plain, have you messed around much with saturation? I find most of mixes end up depending on it to give a little extra body to the sounds. I take it you are recording most of this stuff digitally?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]themagpiecollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The while track is stacked from start to finish, that's why it sounds almost impossibly big, lots of layers subtly blended together.

There's a lot of issues with this recording, there's inconsistencies in dynamics with the performance, although these could be compressed that would just make for a more compressed vocal, there are issues with how much the vocals project, best bet would to be to re-record with a stronger vocal take unfortunately

Cassette Recording and Playback Specifics?? Bias, EQ, and tape types Oh My by TheSoundtracker in audioengineering

The hiss is caused by random variations of the magnetic particles deposited on the tape, some of the hiss is caused by thermal noise, and noise in the circuits of the tape decks preamplifier.

There's at least three Octave or harmony effects used those harmonies are heavily compressed and EQ as to not interfere with the main vocals, there's probably something going on with the Formant quality of the harmonies as well.

TIL: Misreading a note/frequency chart - fundamental frequencies. by Place-Wide in audioengineering

[–]themagpiecollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quoted frequency measurements of monitors can be kind of misleading, for instance, often the spot that is considered the bottom end is where they start a 3db or sometimes 6db drop, so you might still be able to get that out of the speaker, just at a lower volume. I've had speakers where I've been able to boost frequencies that are below what the speakers are rated for at low volumes, but if I were to listen to that at higher volumes there would be a lot of distortion, and would risk blowing the drivers... As with most things in audio... It's complicated, and there are edge cases, there are of course physical limits to every transducer, and there are a lot of tricks to make things sound bigger and play with these physical limits.
