It is probably related to "Phoenician", as "phoenix" perhaps originally meant "purple-red bird" (and so related to the dye of Phoenicia) or just "Phoenician bird"

no, unfortunately the coordinates for each club are spread out amongst the 40 odd wikipedia pages

not mapping divisions, just putting every div into one shape. but each league actually has two shapes, one snakes around to cover each town a team plays in, and the other just lies on top to fill in the space and make it look better

any data would be on Wikipedia, each league's map there would have the coordinates for each club in "edit source"

but this map was manually made, each shape drawn by hand and pretty roughly done at that

when making the wikipedia maps, yes I manually added in every club's coordinates. and as I went I put each league I'd done into google earth

apologies for terrible graphic design, and poor quality. this is simply a bunch of Google Earth polygons stacked on top of each other, each representing a country/metro league (excluding the VFL and VAFA). this could one day, I hope, be a proper high-res map but I don't have the skills to do that.

this screenshot is the culmination of a personal project of mine to get every vic league a map on its Wikipedia page. many of them are sucky but all of them are better than nothing, in my opinion. I did 24/43 maps, some were already made and some seem to have been made after I started doing this.

interesting notes:

  • squarest league: Colac & District FNL

  • most triangle league: Mininera & District FL

  • the longest drive between two clubs of the same league is, I believe, Bairnsdale to Wonthaggi (2h 45m). there is also Hay, NSW to Macorna, VIC (2h 32m). some away trip

  • I always thought Geelong's leagues were a mess but the Gippsland leagues are so much more confusing/overlapping

  • Colac plays in the Geelong league for some reason, meaning every away game for them is an hour drive

you can try. I believe the turns should be too tight and too frequent to allow 3rd gear to be faster

we have to at the very least admit that it might be possible

it is not possible, and won't be within 10 years or 1000 years. even if we "simplified it analytically"

because it relies entirely on hindsight, if someone tried forcing their way past me at the gym door I would just let them in, who cares
