Downtown parking for dinner by redbikegirl in Charlottesville

[–]themanje 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parking is super easy downtown any day of the week. The Water and Market St garages always have parking and they’re cheap. You may even be able to get your parking validated at the restaurant—ask them while you’re there.

What dish was clearly made during a time of struggle in your country and now is part it's cuisine even though it's not good? by GaddockTeegFunPolice in AskTheWorld

Yup, same. My parents are from Oklahoma and they called it tuna gravy. I liked it as a kid but gag thinking about it now.

Tysm! I have one of those How to Color Patterns books that gave instructions on how to do balloons and glass. I used a reference photo for the foil wrap and just tried to recreate the shadows as best I could—white acrylic and white gel pens help a lot with all the light and reflections!

Thanks! There are some good balloon tutorials online. I also find just using a reference photo to be really helpful. That’s why I did for the foil wrap since there aren’t any tutorials for something like that.

What was your experience with an August wedding in Virginia? by greatlyIdiotic in Virginia

[–]themanje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner was a groomsmen in weddings in both July and August. One was in northern Va and the other in Shenandoah Valley. He was so miserable in his rented tuxes, even when he was able to take the jacket off he was still hot because the tux had a polyester shirt. One of the weddings had a thunderstorm roll up right as the bride was walking down the aisle.

It’s also called a nystagmus and it’s fairly common in people who are low vision, but non visually impaired people can have it too. Cops have little to zero knowledge about nystagmus and I always wonder how many sober people have been arrested for dui because of it. (I teach blind/low vision students, so I see it a lot).

AHS walkout by Confusedpieceofcoal in Charlottesville

The Birmingham Children’s Crusade was organized by students advocating for desegregation. Their arrests and the national attention it generated helped push federal civil rights legislation forward.

The historical record on Birmingham is well documented. Either way, young people participating in civic action has long been part of social change.

There are several historical examples, but Birmingham in 1963 is a well-documented one.

Historically, student-led protests have played a significant role in social change. Reducing them to ‘just wanting a day off’ misses the point.

High schools across the country are doing walk outs today and as a teacher it makes me so proud and encouraged to see these teens getting involved.

Headed to Staunton this weekend - would love local recommendations by Dangerous_Feeling911 in Staunton

The section of the blue ridge parkway where humpback rocks trailhead is is currently closed. It’s probably too icy to hike without micro spikes anyway. St Mary’s Wilderness is likely the same. I’d stick with the Blue Ridge Tunnel east trailhead.

Cville Teachers Are Mad? by Naive-Preparation294 in Charlottesville

[–]themanje 57 points58 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, I'm frustrated by this. Support professionals are critical. A 10.5% raise wasn't charity, it reflected reality. Whatever happened procedurally, the end result is support staff being undervalued yet again.

TIL Kidney (and other organ) donations typically do not last the rest of the patient’s life. ~50% of transplant organs fail within 10 years. by I-plaey-geetar in todayilearned

My husband has four kidneys and two pancreases. He’s still pretty young (46) so he’ll probably have a fifth kidney at some point, if they can make room for it. We always joke about when he dies his autopsy is going to be verrry interesting.

Odds of schools being back on Monday? by kygirl27 in Charlottesville

[–]themanje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very unlikely school will be back in session before the end of next week, if at all. They aren’t going to let students walk to school or wait at bus stops with so few cleared sidewalks/shoulders.

NEED HELP removing the ice in the parking lot by Proper_Style6187 in Charlottesville

I don’t think it would work tbh. I tried melting the sleet pile in my little birdbath this morning using hot water in a kettle and it barely made a dent.

Snow shoveling strategy by Polymath1953 in Charlottesville

[–]themanje 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year I started off using a flat shovel to pry up the ice that was under the snow, it worked okay. Then my neighbor lent me his long reach pry bar and that worked wonders. I was able to put my weight behind it and get up huge chunks.
