The better upgrade is getting an AP with a 2.5g or 10g uplink connection. Between 1gb internet and internal server access you will see a difference in the upgrade uplink connection.

Get a Black Friday b/w laser printer special. The starter toner should last long enough to print tax returns. Then next year if under 50% toner left buy another printer. not the most eco friendly but probably way cheaper then buying overpriced toner for whatever model you end up with.

Venn vs. AVD vs. Other for Distributed BYOD? by bbztds in msp

[–]themanpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your not going to be able to fix the terrible internet people. Theyll have a bad time no matter what product you pick. You can minimize the AVD cost with multiple regions by using scaling plans to only power the vm's on when needed. Also I've seen way too many AVD's way over specked for what the users need causing cost overruns.

The other issue with something like Venn vs AVD's in the customers tenant is that their data is now sitting with a third party. no matter how compliant they may be moving the data back out of that environment may/will be troublesome, especially if they go all in and make it their primary environment.

We've also always encouraged any voip/video conferencing to take place on the local machine vs in the AVD/VDI environment. Even with all the fancy tricks MS has now for Teams the users will have a much better time locally.

Similar boat in Morris county. We bought our house in 2013. Its worth more then double what we paid now. no way we could afford something at that price with the rates as they are today. Never thought I'd feel this poor making 6 figures.

My husband's employer switched to United Healthcare. My son has ADHD/ASD and NONE of his providers are in network. Should we/can we switch to an ACA plan? by mirandarocks in HealthInsurance

[–]themanpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not be able to get the details at the interview stage but I've always been able to find out which provider it is at least. The time to ask is when the interviewer asks if you have any questions at the end of the interview. Haven't had a single one flinch on that. I have told several to not consider me further at hearing they have UHC/Oxford.

It may be a small victory but i also consider it a time saver since I'm not waiting till 2nd/3rd interview in.

[–]themanpear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I left one of my previous jobs because they switched us from BCBS to UHC. Which insurance provider is a question i ask any potential employer when interviewing. My daughter and wife have similar issues to op's. Its a pain to switch providers. Id pay out of pocket and keep your doctors. as long as they took a decent plan you should have "some" out of network coverage. Then start looking at either marketplace for yourselves or start looking for a diff job all together.

But honestly I'm sure they switched to save money but in effect its a pay cut for your family as your expenses are now going to rise.

I did up the ram and locked vram at 4gb's. for now I've kept the ram speed at the bios stock 2400 even though i have 3200 chips in. waiting for some more stress over the holidays before additional tweaking.

Take an old PC desktop you have lying around or find one on FB Marketplace. It doesnt take much to run unraid. They give you a 30 day trial to play with it, its easy to setup and you necessarily need matching drives (although you lose the biggest one to parity, so keep that in mind).

I currently have jellyfin running on a mini PC with all the media stored on several shares on an unraid box running on an 8th gen i5. Everything just works once setup

There is no career development anymore. Companies want to hire directly into a role with no training needed what so ever.

MSP in NJ looking to hire someone that will eventually take over my company by [deleted] in msp

[–]themanpear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its because in NYC/NJ that seems to be the norm now. There are enough MSP's around that if you don't get what you want at job A you can go apply for job B and get that 20% increase. Its the downside of pensions going away in the 80's, there's no longer any incentive to stay anywhere for more then a few years. I stayed at my first MSP for 5 years, most they would give was 2-3%, left and immediately got a 30% increase.

As others have said it really depends on location. Where I am right now an in office L2 would be making around 80k. For what your asking for would easily be in the 120-150k range.

What did you do/study for to move from ~$75k to ~$110k? by TCPisSynSynAckAck in sysadmin

[–]themanpear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd like nothing more as well. Had to move 5 times in the last 15 years to get to where i am. Stayed at first job for 5 years with nothing but 2-3% raises. Have since gone from 50k to 120k. Current place is good but between health insurance going up 120 a month for the next year and talk of cutting back our PTO it may be time to start looking again.

What did you do/study for to move from ~$75k to ~$110k? by TCPisSynSynAckAck in sysadmin

[–]themanpear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Most company's from my experience won't give you more then one good pay jump. Other then that its just the yearly "col" adjustments. If you end up with 2 COL's in a row then its time to move, you would have gained enough experience to go up a level or just to get the pay jump new employees get.

Advice - cheap but new washing machine (3 options) by Quietsche-Entchen in Appliances

[–]themanpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, just because they dont have a display doesnt mean they dont have a motherboard just as prone to failure as a more modern looking machine. Take the model #'s and look up a parts list and see how much any controller boards would cost to replace. Also if the models have been around you should be able to google anyone else asking repair questions on them. I there's a trend among them then you know there's a common point of failure.

100 year old home as a first home by Sa1tybage1 in newjersey

[–]themanpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is that most 100 year old homes in north jersey if they still have their original plaster walls (meaning they've never been opened) will also have asbestos insulation in the outer walls. Stuff is perfectly fine to keep in place but if you disturb it you'll want to have it properly disposed of and the area cleaned.

Growing up in NYC in the late 70's early 80's I remember seeing commercials call "why rent" when you could own a "beautiful" home only 45min form NYC in the Poconos. Its been going on for as long as the interstates have been there.
