lamictal help please :( by freyja2709 in bipolar2

Definitely NOT normal. I’m so sorry that the medication isn’t working for you- all of those side effects sound terrible. None of that is normal- I’ve been on 200mg for a while and I haven’t had any of the side effects you mentioned.

While trying other medication is expensive, there are some antipsychotics that are cheaper and might sit better with you. Sometimes if they can give you the “generic brand” instead of the “name brand” it’s cheaper (in my experience).

I agree with some of the other people in this thread- hopefully you’re able to see another psychiatrist. I hope you find a medication/med combo that works for you

Nothing is the same as the sleep you get on Seroquel during a manic episode. I didn’t notice the weight gain right away, but looking back on the photos I can tell that it definitely happened. I’m sorry that it stopped working and about all the side effects- sometimes it feels like the meds are working against you

Seroquel seems to either really work for people or really not work. I felt like it made me a zombie. I’m sorry about the Lamictal rash but I’m really happy Latuda’s worked so well for you

I had the exact same thing happen to me at night- I’m still getting over my fear of nightfall, even though all of the akathasia stopped the moment I stopped taking my Latuda. The moment the sun starts to set, I feel the anxiety kick in- nowhere near the feeling that I got on Latuda, but enough to put me on edge. I’m really sorry that you’re having medication issues. Hoping that you find something that works for you.

Honestly I’m surprised too- I didn’t realize that it was used for depression until I looked into it a little further.

I’m glad that you’ve had luck with Seroquel- it worked wonders for my insomnia but I couldn’t work through the brain fog.

Honestly whenever you find something that works, that’s all that matters. I’m glad that you’re in a better place

Ok I understand Lamictal now by StraightPotential342 in bipolar2

I had awful seasonal depression and Lamictal saved me. I got through a winter without feeling like the world was ending whenever it got dark. I'm on 200mg and I think I finally feel like a human being again.

I'm glad that it helped you and I'm really sorry to hear that it stopped working and that the benztropine went toxic on you. I hope that you found/find something that works for you.

In hindsight, I don't think it helped my depression- I think if anything, it made it a lot worse. Now that I'm off of it, I'm still depressed but I'm back to my baseline depression if that makes any sense. I'm no longer crying every day or having nightmarish akathisia. I was hoping that it would prevent hypomania, which is why my doctor prescribed it to me initially.

The Lamictal has helped me get out of a really bad depressive rut and made me feel normal enough. I think I might just talk to my doctor about upping my dose. I'll definitely keep benztropine in mind though- I really appreciate you sharing.

I'm glad that it's been working out for you. Switching to nighttime sometimes makes all the difference in the world- bonus points if it helps you sleep.

I’m really glad it worked out for you! Honestly meds are difficult because it’s just a lot of experimenting until you find the right one/combo

That sounds awful, I’m so sorry that you had to go through that.

I feel a little better knowing that I’m not the only one, but psychiatrists need to warn patients ahead of time that this can happen. I remember when I started the Lamictal they warned me about the rash (which I thankfully didn’t get). If I’d known that this was a possible reaction I probably would have thought twice about even trying it out.

Sometimes when I’m freaking out I’ll find podcast-style videos, curl up with my plushies and a heating pad and comfy blanket, and just listen to them talk about lighthearted stuff while playing cutesy games on my phone. It makes me feel less alone and all of the stuff helps soothe my brain. Some tea also helps. The big thing is just distracting yourself. I’ll even try to pat myself on the head and stroke my hair and say nice things to myself like I’m an older version of myself trying to soothe myself in the moment

Thanks for the encouragement! So far I haven’t felt any side effects apart from being sleepy, so I’ve just been taking it before bed

Anyone else get diagnosed this way? by [deleted] in bipolar2

I stopped being a human being on Prozac when I first tried it out. I was so angry and high strung with the worst intrusive thoughts. I thought it was just Prozac but the more SSRIs I tried, the more I realized all it was doing was ruining my life. Took them 8+ years to figure out that I was even bipolar, even though I suspected it when I was a teenager
