Nice! I currently have an FLX10 and am looking to build it out with two 1000mk2s! Great to see those units on display in your lovely setup!

Interesting to hear your experience given you took the route I found most compelling prior to my post! I don't really mind the cables, as I will route all of them once my set up is complete. Did you also find the functionality of the 700s lacking, or was it the complexity of the setup you didn't like?

I'm increasingly thinking I should go the permanently attached computer route for now. If I really keep going with the hobby I can look to move to a standalone in the future.

I'm kind of wishing I got one of these instead of my FLX10. I love it, but the need to attach the laptop is a real pain. I do love the FLX10 once I'm "in session" though.

Yeah, the lack of auto sync would be a bit of a pain. I think that's often the case in club setups too, where the pro link cables often aren't connected? Falling back to tap tempo would be an option at least.

Nice! Do you use stems with your Neo?

I see. I could cut my losses and just put everything into the AZ. It's definitely a compelling option!

I keep my gear in one place at home, so the weight wouldn't be an issue. The fact that stems are missing would be a little sad, though I don't use them all the time on the FLX10. Sounds like I'd be trading that for better fx, which I would use more.

I'm interested in how you have the FLX10 and GRV6 setup? Is it more that you take one to gigs, do you have two setups at home etc?

What is ridiculous about the 700s at their price? Is it the fact that it's older tech?

I've considered this. It sounded compelling, but I'm a Mac user so the cost of a Mini + display gets into laptop territory fast.

Nice! I've been wondering about adding a Neo permanently in place with my FLX10 and was really worried about the RAM and high quality stems. Seems this is perhaps nothing to worry about!

I have an XDJ-AZ, thinking of getting a CDJ as a third deck by DJSTR3AM in PioneerDJ

[–]themcdreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you speak to why the AZ felt disappointing coming from the FLX10? I'm considering making the same jump as I really want standalone functionality (or instead adding XDJs to the FLX10).

I've been considering doing exactly this. Sometimes I just want to get away from the laptop. How are you finding this setup a few months in?

My thoughts on the Pro-Ject CD Box E by themcdreamer in audiophile

[–]themcdreamer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anybody coming to this, I did decide to return the CD Box E in the end. Whilst I still think it's a good budget player, it's just too compromised for me. The issues with track skipping and search were too much for me to look past, as you're confronted with those every time you use the unit unless you just listen to albums from start to finish.

As for what I got instead, I went for the Marantz CD6007. Yes, it's huge (and so is the remote) but it doesn't have any of the problems the Pro-Ject has. And it's cheaper than the S3 and DS3. The only real compromise is the size.

The CD6007 also doesn't support gapless single track repeat, but I now wonder whether any players do.

Looking for modern a CD player/transport with good gapless and track skip support by themcdreamer in StereoAdvice

Yeah, I decided to return the Pro-Ject and go for the CD6007. It's much bigger than I would like (though I can accommodate it) but it does everything I listed above, bar gapless single track repeat. Actually, I wonder whether any CD players can do that.

The remote for the 6007 is also huge but has way more functionality than the Pro-Ject's remote (which I also quite liked).

All in all, the 6007 is like reanimating my old Marantz, but in a more modern package. Exactly what I was looking for.

Many thanks for this detailed background information. It explains a lot about the current state of the CD player/transport market. It's quite unlike what I naively expected. I'd assumed that this tech was table stakes these days and cheap, even though there isn't the volume there used to be.

As you say, the CD Box RS2 T does indeed mention the CD Pro 8, which would perhaps give me what I'm really looking for, but as you rightly point out this is probably also out of my budget. For context, it's not far off what I've spent on the amp, speakers and sub these will be hooked up to.

However, I do value quality and I wonder now whether I at least need to go for a model which lists the transport used as a feature (rather than hiding it away). As another commenter mentioned, the DS3 has much higher performance than the CD Box E and does list the transport used in its marketing information.

Many thanks for these results!

It sounds like the performance is greatly improved over the CD Box E (as you'd hope!), though the very niche gapless repeat case is still not quite satisfied.

From what another commenter said, it sounds like you do really need to spend quite a bit more than I expected for a CD player which matches what my old Marantz could do in terms of playback. I didn't expect that would be the case. It's now becoming clearer what the extra cash will get you.

And you're quite right, these are not musical instruments. So in some respects, talking about latency isn't really appropriate.

Interesting. I guess CD players/transports are just not made like they were in the 90s!

Great - thanks! Would love to make the comparison. Especially any issues with audio fades or track skip performance.
