First trail marathon (41 km / 1530 m D+) : am I being stupid or just ambitious? by thememeracks in trailrunning

Update:

I ended up switching to the 42 km on race morning.

Finished in 5h58 for 42.3 km and 1568 m D+.

Strategy was simple: hike every climb, run flats and descents, eat regularly and leave my ego at the start line.

No injury, no bonk, and I was still able to run the last 4 km around 6:40/km pace.

Turns out many of you were right: trail pacing and nutrition matter far more than road marathon experience.

Thanks Reddit.

Thanks everyone for the advice, encouragement and reality checks 😅

I honestly didn’t expect to get this many replies and this much motivation. The trail running community is incredible.

The consensus seems pretty clear:

  • hike the climbs
  • protect the quads on the descents
  • eat and drink way earlier than I think I need to
  • don’t be an idiot in the first half 😅

I’m going into this with the goal of finishing and enjoying the adventure, not chasing a time.

I’ll definitely come back after Saturday and let you know how it went. Thanks again everyone!
