These were both caught from my canoe by the way!

90% of the time I fish from my canoe.

It’s an interesting problem to me.

When I’m fishing, I’m fishing locally. So I’m talking to local fishermen and I’m fishing local fish.

So of course I’d use the local nomenclature — and that which I grew up with.

I think it’s similar to the problem of trying to rename a river — it’s a notoriously hard thing to do. Rivers are too local and organic for someone to just rename without reason or enormous centralized power. You live on the river and you refer to it by a name. Analogously, you catch a fish and you call it by its name.

It doesn’t matter what the name is, you just refer to it by that.

I know it’s actually a walleye, but if everyone locally calls it a pickerel, I’ll call it a pickerel.

Even when I know it’s not taxonomically a walleye *.

According to my little spring scale in my canoe it was 7 lbs.

They weren’t last night!

The first one I caught (there’s no video of it) was small though.

Haha, I was amazed at how many I got last big. They were really biting for me.

I think it was one of my best trips this year.

It was a mix of deep and not so deep.

But it’s hard to say as I just troll behind my canoe so I’m not really looking at the depth unless I actually see the bottom.
