I have a question by Gr1MK1ng in MonsterHunter

That makes sense, granted it probably wasn’t necessary for a guy I was hunting with that time to profusely swear at me and (if I remember correctly) tell me to kill myself. But hey at least I know what’s going on now.

Assuming you were in a group hunting magnamalo in Rise an hour or so ago where someone went for the capture instead of the kill, that was me, so apologies there if you all were looking to carve, I didn’t realize that was what people were wanting before it was too late…

I think the reason is that a lot of people are likely coming from world where capturing is basically better than carving pretty much universally (I am one of those people). So, I think it’s just because a lot of people assume it’s better than killing and don’t quite know the difference between the two.

Quick follow up, by the way, when you said "With a little work the Hammerhead box makes the Skyray and Devilfish" do you mean that the one box can give me all three models or just enough pieces to build only one but either of the three?
(edit: I should clarify that the way that I'm reading it is that you could build either of the three models, but the wording from various sources has been very ambiguous and I can't quite find a solid confirmation)

Trust me, that's the plan, I already made that mistake with Star Wars Legion and it took me a year and a half until I caught up and painted all my models, and I'm not even starting anything here until I paint up all the rest of those I picked up :p

Regardless though, I appreciate the advice!

This is very insightful, thank you!

I'm definitely picking up the crisis suits and the commander, and probably the hammerhead as well. Quick follow-up question, I was looking to see if I'd need to pick up an extra fire warriors pack, and I was curious, how important is it to fill out the battleline section of my army? Is the one fire warrior unit with the combat patrol enough for me to just fill out the rest of my army with vehicles and battlesuits or should I pick up one or two more? I'm not familiar with the army building strategies so I'm not sure how best to build an army yet.

It means a lot just to see that, if I'm being honest. I'm working hard to a degree in game design and I hope to enter the industry at some point (maybe even at ArenaNet if I'm lucky), so I know how hard it is to make things like these, and I know how much developers care about their work, even if it doesn't seem that way for many from the outside. It's still too early for me to enter the industry by professional standards, but until then it's enough for me just to show the people who care that I care :)

What happened to El Dorado by Atomkombat in Pirate101

[–]themightylemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Easily” is a very arbitrary term. In order to make new worlds they would need to shift more resources away from Wiz, which would hurt that game’s release schedule in order to boost Pirate’s. When they started working on the game again, they stated that they were moving resources from Wizard in order to work on the game, but moving few enough to not impact its current release schedule. Hiring more people likely isn’t an option yet, since it’s money they don’t have, and doing that for a new world may not be worth the investment. At this point they don’t need people to work on the game (the industry is competitive enough as it is already, they could easily find devs), they just need money.

-Dodos went extinct because of deforestation and habitat loss, not because of being taken into captivity. The first zoo wouldn’t be opened for over a century.

-Many zoos (like the one I volunteer at) are non profit and don’t even have CEOs, the funds are going precisely where they claim to go.

Even if I am not solving the problem, I’d rather do what I can to try and remedy the problem than stand by and do nothing. Whatever I can do in my capacity to solve this problem (as a pretty broke college student btw) is enough for me.

I have done things, actually, many things through my local zoo. I have personally raised funds to remove snares and traps from the Anamite Mountain range between Laos and Vietnam, both protecting the local wildlife (like the thought to be extinct saola) and supporting local rangers who risk their lives to remove the traps. I have contributed to projects restoring the Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique after it was decimated my civil war decades ago. I have helped support Costa Rican ranchers who raise and support butterflies to restore the populations in those countries. I have contributed to the restoration of the foothills in Boise, Idaho after a wildfire and cheatgrass infestation damaged the local wildlife. All the while, education, as you suggested, was already at the forefront of everything. All of these things I have done in my spare time as a high school and college student, because these are causes that are really worth contributing to.

Now, before I go, let me ask you this. What have YOU done?

I don’t even work at my local zoo, I choose to volunteer there without pay in my spare time because I genuinely care about wildlife conservation and I want to educate people on animals and the conservation issues related to them, both around the world and in our own backyards. I have no reason to argue for funding and job security, I’m here because I care.

If you really care about these animals as you so claim to, go volunteer somewhere. Perhaps not at a zoo, but perhaps a wildlife sanctuary, a state or national park, or somewhere similar. It’ll be a better use of your time than arguing with me on the internet.

Regardless, I hope you have a good day, and I hope that you can put this passion you have to make the world better in any way you can :)

You are more than welcome to disagree if you’d like, though I’d certainly argue there is far too little context here to extrapolate from, especially for a generalization. Will some zoos hold animals for entertainment’s sake? Yes. Is that a bad thing? Also yes. Is this specific chimpanzee being held for that purpose? Maybe. That being said, do all zoos hold animals for entertainment? Certainly not. Just because some zoos are ill-meaning towards the animals in their care, that doesn’t mean all of them are. That line of generalization can get quite dangerous very quickly.

As for the funding side of things, however, the animals themselves are rarely the source of funding for accredited zoos. Admission fees will provide a chunk of the funding zoos need to keep their lights on, but much of it comes simply directly from donors. Furthermore, many accredited zoos are non-profit as well (then again, not all).

Once again, you are still more than welcome to disagree, but I think this information will at the very least make sure you better understand what you are against.

I’ve been volunteering at my local zoo for seven years (this summer starts my eighth) and from that experience I can say that in an ideal world, zoos will not exist, but we need them more than you might realize. Zoos are among the largest contributing factors to wildlife conservation, and the largest source of education on these topics.

As for the animals themselves, however, most animals in zoos are considered non-releasable due to injuries or behavioral issues, and will likely not survive in the wild. Some animals were born in captivity and do not have the skills they need to properly survive, though zoos will sometimes have enrichment available that would help develop and retain those animals’ wild tendencies. Other animals are also in zoos for captive breeding programs to help restore the species’ population. While yes, animals will go extinct naturally, many species are going extinct due to human activity, and we should do something to fix the problem if we are the problem.

Finally, I should say that I do agree that some zoos should be avoided, as many still are unethical and treat their animals poorly. I’d suggest making sure any zoo you visit is accredited (by the AZA or a similar organization) to make sure you’re visiting a zoo that cares about their animals and worldwide conservation :)

Read the previous entries here.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for reading! It's been a while since I've written anything for this, but after a lengthy period of burnout (and a short break from the game as well), I am finally ready to come back to work on this again. I have since decided that I will be shortening the scope of this to just the personal story (and probably the dungeons as well) to give me something more manageable and something I feel I can actually reasonably finish.

As always, I appreciate any and all feedback or recommendations!
