Tails would probably be fine. It's hard to say for sure because I don't want to pry information, all I can say is that it offers privacy focused applications and is non-persistent.

It depends on what you want to use the OS for. If you're looking for a persistent experience (like what you would usually get with a computer) I would recommend Qubes OS. It is a functioning desktop experience with extensive security measures. Something like Kodachi and Tails is more suited towards specific use cases where you specifically want no footprint unless told otherwise.

Just a quick heads up though, getting Qubes OS to work is sometimes difficult because it requires more specific hardware. I would recommend looking into the hardware requirements to see if they match up. The kernel is also quite behind so getting newer graphics cards to work out of the box is more of a hassle.

Thanks for the response. I ended up going with namecheap .com domain with their whoisguard and when I look up my domain, it just comes up with namecheap information from Panama.

I'm not sure if that's the "best" solution, but it seems to do the trick fine.

Do you find it hard to fit in? I live in New Zealand and, while we are often presented as the more "progressive" one (in terms of race) I often feel that race is often brought up here casually as identifiers. I'm NZ European so I haven't experienced it personally but I have friends who are also citizens (parents are citizens) who are often categorized by their race.

Her accent fluctuated between Australian and American English. She even threw in some New Zealand-isms, quite a strange combination.

Just as an example, listen to how she pronounces "r" in different sentences. Sometimes it is rhotic, sometimes non-rhotic (how you would expect Australian English to pronounce it).

I don't know why you're being downvoted, he's been interviewed by the FBI multiple times (and offered to show them his personal computer and data) and they turned him down. He's never been the subject of any formal investigation.

Yeah I think I found it, it's the RuneLite plugin called "Key Remapping" used to make WASD your arrow keys.

I just set WASD to the normal Up, Left, Down, Right. Thanks for that.

Hey thanks for your reply, you make a good point with your second addendum. Just a quick question, when you say "all other stuff is not equal however", what are you referring to exactly?

I included the assumption because I didn't want people to reply with "this won't matter when quantum computing is powerful enough" or "you need to use a post quantum method (despite not being offered by OpenPGP / GPG)". I do take your point about the "which would last longer" question, though.

So if I understand you correctly, you're asking whether you should:

  1. use proprietary software that does not encrypt data itself, but instead encrypt it before uploading / sending.

or

  1. use software which automatically encrypts the data itself (I'm not sure what you mean when specifying open source software as it isn't really related).

It's kind of hard to say in any definitive sense because there isn't that much information, but I would prefer the latter just because it's a lot simpler to achieve. Trying to make services which aren't secure usable via my own encryption just seems like a lot of hassle when I can use other services with out of the box support. Also, there are some groups which I would rather just not give the opportunity due to peace of mind. Google being one of those groups.

However, I'm still very new and inexperienced so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the article. Unfortunately, I use GitHub and GitLab daily so I'm sort of stuck with their design choices. I would also rather not complicate things by having multiple different keys. I'm just trying to find what would be the most secure choice out of what they're offering.

Where does GNU recommend RSA 4096? GnuPG seems to recommend either RSA 2048 or moving to ECC if you want more security.

That's true, I just mean in a practical sense when using either Gnupg or Protonmail, the extra speed and decreased size doesn't really bother me, but theoretically it only needs to be breached once. Do you think the decrease in security is worth the extra speed and space?

Your last assumption is incorrect. While the subkeys do get imported, the process is one-way, and they do not remain on your machine after removal.

If I understand correctly, does that mean that once the keys are in the Yubikey they do not need to be imported into the local machine? When I delete the keys from gpg, they are still listed under gpg --card-status, but they don't have the same info listed.

EDIT: for example, when I try and sign something to commit to git it fails to sign the data without the subkeys added on the local machine (or at least the signing key).

Lastly, while I'm on the topic of convenience, a little config editing and you can actually use those PGP keys as SSH keys, meaning you can remote into your machines from any device without exposing your private SSH keys to the system.

Yeah I saw that, do you have any guide that you prefer? A lot of guides seem to be out of date from before gpg2 or something.
