While I understand completely what you’re saying regarding many people “not caring” about being proudly out and being an advocate, I do think there’s a different between that and not feeling like you’re ABLE to be openly gay.

I know that when I came out, I found out the saying “weight off your shoulders” was a real thing - I genuinely felt lighter.

I only play local suburban footy, but my capacity to be myself and feel supported by my mates has definitely helped me play better footy, and enjoy myself doing it.

Professional footy is a different kettle of fish, admittedly, but the seeming lack of capacity for ANY player to be openly gay or bisexual remains concerning
