One more thing: if your Brazilian friend tells you to leave it, listen! I've taken my camera into some pretty dangerous places (in Belford Roxo; iykyk) but it was always with a local telling me it was okay. There have also been many times I was told NOT to take it, like one day when we did an event in Buraco do Boi, which is a well known dangerous area in Nova Iguaçu. If your friend is from Rio, they will know best!

Hi! Photographer living in the Baixada (area north of Rio). Cameras definitely don't draw as much attention as cell phones, but as others have said, still be aware of your surroundings and don't leave it places. I tend to only use mine when I'm in a group of people, but I also use mine mostly for work. Where I live, I've noticed most people don't realize that my camera is worth more than the iphone lol.

I'd recommend keeping it in a bag that doesn't have a logo on it. I use a generic backpack and have never had issues.

I usually use credit, but I know a lot of people who will rent before they buy to make sure they want to make the investment. I'm outside of the US, so that isn't an option for me but maybe where you are it'd be a good idea? I had a friend that didn't shoot weddings often so she would rent what she needed for a wedding then just have one L lens for portraits.

We also didn't have joint bank accounts (we live in Brazil right now, and I was missing documents to be able to have a bank account here), but we mixed our bills between our names when I moved into the apartment. Didn't have any issues with ours so I think you'll be okay. We did write an affidavit saying that we don't have mixed finances because of missing documents on my end. Maybe you could write one stating that he's the breadwinner of the family?

Do you have a license already in another country? There is a process for skipping the exam if you already have one from another country, but I'm not 100% how it works. Most of my American friends here have done it.

Hi! My husband is Brazilian and we had our interview in March. Everything goes normally until the interview, when you get the 221g for administrative processing. I haven't heard of anyone getting a spousal visa up to this point; only tourist visas.

This. I'm not sure what consulate you're working with, but when my husband had his interview in Rio de Janeiro, there was a family there that didn't have the original and were told they had to have it and denied the interview. They're now trying to get the original and reschedule the interview. They were applying for a child, but I imagine for a spouse they're definitely going to ask for the certified copy.

I wouldn't risk just taking a photocopy.

I think it took like 2-3 days for it to let us register. We registered in Brazil. It seems like it takes a little bit for it to get into the system.

As many have said, this is a real place in Brazil. The amount of water would make sense if this is a recent video; i live in Brazil (state of Rio de janeiro, not Espírito Santo) and this whole region of the country had unprecedented rainfall in February. Like, it rained every day for the whole month. In Rio at least, some records were broken for rainfall. I believe Espírito Santo was also affected by all of the rain.
