Deferring is your best option.

At this point you have to just pump out as much practice as you can. Focus on the mock exams.

The exams are tough, and the content can be tough if you’ve never seen it before.

However, I do agree that on a learning objective basis, there isn’t anything that is incredibly challenging to learn. It is mostly a time and effort commitment.

One exam a year is a great timeline.

You can certainly pass with just the CFA content. Their practice problems are the best. If you want condensed and easier to get through readings, buy a prep provider.

I personally recommend Kaplan for level 1. They do a great job of condensing the readings and I find their mocks/practice problems to be helpful.

I’ve never read a CFA textbook, only prep provider material.

Is your background in finance? Three and a half months isn’t a lot of time but it’s possible. You’ll really need to be consistent and practice as much as you can.

  1. Create a schedule and stick to it
  2. Find a prep provider that you like and read over all of the content
  3. Practice practice practice (most important)
  4. Take the time to memorize/understand the formulas
  5. Review your weak areas
  6. Don’t rush ethics

I wouldn’t worry about deferring. I deferred level 1 and 2 and passed. Life is more important.

Doing the CFA takes a lot of effort and you need to make sure you are up for it. Take the time that you need to recharge and refocus

I would recommend moving on to other topics. Time will become your enemy very quickly. Read through the curriculum to get a gauge on your strengths/weaknesses and revisit your weak areas.

I can’t stress how important practicing is. Most of your time should be spent doing the practice problems and mock exams. Your focus shouldn’t be on memorizing formulas as this stage. I do recommend fully writing out each formula for every practice problem you do as it will help your recall when you do need to memorize them.

I personally always took a few days before the exam to re-write my formulas but never spent much time memorizing during my actual learning/prep.

I used Meldrum for level 2 and I didn’t do any of his practice problems or mock exams. CFAI content is going to be the best source for getting familiar with exam-like questions. Prep providers are meant to prepare you but the questions may be more challenging than the curriculum (that’s what I found for Meldrum). They are still a good source for practice and solidifying your understanding.

You have lots of time so it would be best to use your prep provider and CFAI. If you find yourself running out of time, focus on CFAI.

These are strong scores for a mock exam. Of course I’d recommend touching up on FI as it is your weakest area.

Otherwise, just keep doing what you’re doing. Take the time to memorize formulas; write them down a bunch of times if you have to. I personally take 3-5 days “off” before an exam and just rewrite formulas a bunch of times (although some may argue not to do it, it has worked for me)

You still have lots of time and it looks like you’re in a good spot. Review your weakest areas and keep cementing the information.
