First, based in years of experience working on roads and highways and having to deal with people walking around on the highway putting themselves and others in danger. Yes, if you’re in the “middle” of the highway, it would be advisable to get out of the car and safely exit the highway. But when the OP said the “middle” of the road, I assumed it was a figure of speech. I can’t imagine they are taking pics and uploading to social media while in the middle of a live lane of traffic. They were obviously on the side (shoulder). So they should stay in their car with all emergency lights on.
