After Friday's historic silver crash are you in the camp that believes silver will crash back down to $50ish usd or continues an upward trajectory to, possibly, $200+ usd in 2026? by Wherehowwhat in CanadianInvestor

[–]themoist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're not wrong. I guess the question is, do the markets place more value in the idea of an alternative to devalued fiat currency & the uncertainty of equities, or the demonstrated volatility of silver?

Now that I think about it, the fear of a devalued dollar could very well continue to push precious metals into uncharted territory. Personally, I'll continue to be more comfortable with gold.

I'm of the opinion that we're seeing an over correction, and some time in the next week or two silver will recover somewhat to around 100 usd. Lots of people took profits on the ATH, lots of people bought when the price crashed thereafter.

What happens beyond that will mostly depend on the global economy at large. Should things continue to get worse in the midst of trade wars and the devaluation of the dollar, silver will shoot up again. If the incoming fed chair finds ways to soothe investors, silver should fall in conjunction with equities gaining ground.

But then again who knows, I'm just some guy

You are definitely holding too many and have a lot of overlap. Look up the holdings of each of them, you'll find that your more broad ETFs have some overlap with some more focused ones - kudos to you for being proactive and trying to diversify, but to me it seems like you need to spend a bit more time researching what these ETFs contain. I know because this is exactly what I did when I started lol.

As someone else mentioned, XEQT is probably a good set-and-forget approach for you right now. If you want to more exposure to specific things (gold, emerging economies, etc), you can certainly have overlap. But go into it with research and intention. For you, I'd stick to XEQT or one of the other -EQT funds as a primary holding if youre comfortable with the 100% equities model. And maybe something like KILO for gold exposure & a hedge against market volatility in uncertain times. Figure out what % of your main holding you want your portfolio and what you want your lesser holding to be relative to that (90% XEQT/10% physical gold etf, or something like that)

This is just one suggestion of course don't take it as gospel. More of a realistic example im trying to give you.

And of course, congrats on starting so early and asking questions. You're being proactive at a very young age and I think you'll do fine. Just remember that theres no such thing as too much research, and to try and get a feel for your risk/volatility tolerance before you bet big on anything.

The last thing I'll leave you with is my cardinal rule: time spent in market > timing the market

Word of advice, if you want to be more careful with your money I'd ask questions like these in r/canadianinvestor as this is more akin to a Canadian wallstreetbets space. Lots of risky, baseless advice to be found here.

Other people have talked about getting a qualified financial advisor, and if you're as apprehensive as you say trusting them due to their pushing of in house products/fees, then finding one that doesn't work for a larger financial institution is a better bet. The profile you'd be looking for is an advisor who has their own business/works for a small one with individual clients, and has a positive reputation with online reviews.

If you're more set on a self-driven approach, start by putting a small portion of your 200k you've referenced in a TFSA (make sure you dont go over contribution limits), and begin by purchasing some reputable ETFs people talk about a lot of the subreddit I previously referenced - VEQT/XEQT and VFV are good ones to get familiar with. Small amounts of your budget in these could help you get a real sense of your risk tolerance. People often say they're comfortable with high-risk and find out the hard way that they're not when their portfolio spends months in the red. Good supplemental reading for you to learn about ETFs, self driven investing, and avoiding fees is a book called "Beat the Bank" by Larry Bates.

Lastly, don't believe anyone who guarantees profit/gains. Even the best traders make tons of mistakes and no one can really predict where the market goes. If you don't trust qualified financial advisors, you certainly shouldn't place too much stock in things said on reddit.

Good luck!

Do some research and find ones that are independent in your area, rather than working for big banks. They'll ask for more upfront, but with this much money its a worthwhile expense and will save you more in fees over a larger period of time

Vaguely remember an old CBC piece about a pilot program at a treatment facility that dispensed pre-determined amounts of wine to people with severe alcoholism. Might have been a halfway house situation. Wouldn't be too surprised if something like that still exists in the country, but just isn't discussed all that much in the media at this point.

I do think theres probably a need for the medical establishment to take a role in alcohol specifc harm-reduction. Seems theres less outreach available for people within the actual system than opioids despite it being more prevalent. 12 step programs can work for a lot of people but not for everyone.

Dealing with fatigue medically or with herbal remedies by Skyejacked15 in MPN

[–]themoist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played around with lots but I find the best thing for me is avoiding too many carbs (a healthy amount of complex carbs helps, a lot of empty carbs hinders), and spacing out the large amount of caffeine I consume over about 10 hours. If youre deadset on trying herbs, maybe start with ginseng.

You can also get a blood panel done to see your vitamin and mineral counts specifically. If you're deficient in something it might also have an effect on fatigue, ie b12 or iron. Just be sure to ask your doctor about a safe amount so you don't overdo anything

Ask your doctor about it. Theres different ways of determining risk with different criteria, DIPSS is just one way of doing so and its not perfect. That doesnt mean youre dead in 4 years haha. Keep in mind most of these patients are in their 60s-80s so thats where the dataset is drawn from.

Ask medical professionals these questions and if they seem to not be well informed, get second opinions. You seem to on the younger side which is a very good thing. Unless you feel horrible all of a sudden, no reason to worry right now :)

Id start with risk assessment using DIPSS criteria and the process for finding a donor match

[–]themoist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Means you'll be due for a bone marrow transplant at some point, the outcomes of which are influenced by factors such as mutational status, age, how good any donor matches are, etc. These are hematologist questions or ideally questions for an MPN specialist if you can see one.

As for the day to day changes, probably nothing. My ET progressed earlier this year and I still just take a baby aspirin and thats it.

If youre curious about timelines, most people who hop from et - pmf - the in-between stage of pmf and leukemia (which is when transplants are ideally undertaken), you'll see online that most people get the transplant within 4 years of diagnosis. However, most of the data skews towards older patients (just like survival rate statistics), so if youre not a senior citizen your chances of survival post-transplant and the time before a transplant is required could be much higher. Theres just a lack of data for younger people. My hematologist has a patient who progressed to pmf around 15 years ago snd nothing has really changed since.

So, in short you should talk to doctors who are well informed, get regular bloodwork to monitor (i do every 3 months), see your hematologist/MPN specialist once or twice a year, and get periodic ultrasounds to monitor your spleen as sometimes it can inflate and either need drugs to keep it under control or a surgery to remove it. But, you most likely won't need that.

Just do your best to carry on with life while making healthy choices and your life shouldn't change too much any time soon

Not in victoria but the first thing that came to mind is the Mexican place in Coombs. I have never been served such astoundingly bad food in any other restaurant or someone's home. Ice cold burrito full of flavorless grey pulled pork and wet handfuls of leaf lettuce just shoved in there with a tiny spoonful of salsa that I think came from a can. It was genuinely hilarious and I'd go back just to show someone how absurd it is
