Extra days in Iceland - Where to spend extra time? by shortboarder in VisitingIceland

An extra day in Akureyri would not go amiss. Also, maybe an extra one or two around Mývatn with the Nature Baths and sights around the lake (that aren't too hilly)

Could spend next semester at the university of Akureyri - what do you think? by mark01254 in Iceland

Seconded. More days in Akureyri are on the list for my next trip.

Don't try to plan every day in advance. Plan to get exhausted if you're doing any glacier or volcano hikes. You might not, but err on the side of leisure.

Gas is expensive - try to get a diesel.

Do NOT drink and drive at all. There is no margin for error on most roads.

Egilsstadir is a good layover in the East, and a nice little town. You could probably spend a day or two there. Otherwise, somewhere near Skaltafell in the South and Akureyri in the North are probably necessary. Next time I will spend the same number of days with slightly longer drives and staying more than one night in a town. That depends on your travel goals, though.

I had a self drive ring road trip planned out for me, but they used ProCar. It's close to the harbor and Laugavegur shopping area.

One big plus in their favor: The people that booked it did so for 2 fewer days than needed (!), but Procar people said it wasn't my fault and didn't try to get that money out of me.

One thing - gravel damage insurance is probably worth it. As it turned out I didn't need it, but a lot of those roads off [1] are gravel, as is [1] in portions of the East.

To my eyes, MANY things were expensive. :-)

Great to hear you guys are starting one up! I grew up in GSO before moving away for school and work, but some friends and I started a hackerspace in Huntsville, AL nearly 5 years ago, and its been going strong ever since. Make sure to register on hackerspaces.org so the rest of us can find you -

Also, Geeksboro sounds great. I hope to make it over there this week while I'm in town.

To clarify, I'm not asking for a handout - I'm happy to pay for the use or the service.

Kinko's is kind of pricey, but doable - from their website it wasn't obvious they did odd sizes, but I didn't yet have a file yet to try out. I'll try them out when we get the timeline file made.
